Anyone else always have days like this? - Frustrated MT

For some unknown reason my footpedal just decides to stop working this morning and I spend hours to get it going again. I finally get back into my groove, only to get a dictation that is 29 minutes long with only 4 minutes of actual dictating! I can never get ahead and get a decent line count anymore. There is always something that comes up to keep my production down and shrink my paycheck. I wish we were compensated fairly for times when a dictator keeps the phone on for 28 minutes without saying much of anything! Is it just me or does everyone have days like this?

I can totally relate... except I have kids at home with me while I type. It makes the day interesting for sure. I have 1 doc that I type for who talks so slow I can use the fastest setting on my program and still keep up fairly well. Talk about slowing you down. He also is notorious for STATS that are 1/2 hour to a full hour long. oy.

Sometimes, all mayhem breaks loose and we just have to roll with the punches. During the days/months I have low volume or just can't get enough work I do stress a little but then just accept the fact and pray that next week or month will be better. (and we laugh about the author between me and my bosses) Humor tends to help deal with the stress for me. ;)

hang in there! once you get over these little hurdles things seem to get back into the swing fairly quickly. (and all those mishaps will be a blur!) :)

Thanks for your kind words. My kids are home now during the summer too for half of the time that I type, and that does certainly make life interesting. Good luck to you!

Cat barfs up hairball right next to foot pedal, which I accidentally step on.

My only working pen (used for keeping my daily work logs) runs out of ink, must continue logging with an old crayon.

Get up to go to mailbox, come back to discover my glasses have been misplaced. Spend the next 30 min. looking for them, only to discover they're on the top of my head.

Power comes back on, finally start typing, only to be distracted by overwhelming fatigue, and need to sleep.

Drink 2 cups of strong coffee in rapid succession. Now distracted by a nearly overwhelming urge to run a marathon.

It's always SOMETHING.

Mercury retrograde - VetMT

I am convinced that astrology is valid, and one of the biggest reasons I am convinced is Mercury retrograde, which causes communcation foul-ups, equipment failures, and other weirdness and crossed wires.

Mercury went retrograde today. I got in my Jeep to go to yoga class and had a dead battery--out of the blue! It ran fine yesterday. Couldn't recharge the dang thing, a neighbor jump-started me, I drove to Auto Zone and had to buy a new one.

Mercury is retrograde August 2 thru 26 this time. Happens about 3 times a year. I actually keep track of this and expect things to go haywire. I never make changes in my life or sign a contract when Mercury is retrograde.

Google it and see when it's due again. It helps me laugh at these exasperating things--like, hahaha, I expected this! Mercury retrograde--hahaha

every other report is tragic? Tonight I just want to quit, so depressing. I hate doing child death reports, alcohol-involved MVAs where someone dies, drug overdoses where the person dies, attempted suicide, severe brain damage/paralysis from fall, all in one shift, all young people!! It seems that every dictator tonight has made some sort of mistake or said something that doesn't seem right (mg/mcg, right/left, dates, names, age, etc.) that required extra research through past reports (if your lucky they have some) to get correct information? Or where the residents make you want to beat your head against the wall because they cannot pronounce half the stuff their field exposes them to? I am in quite a quandy right now. I have been out of work as an MT now for 3 months due to a layoff. I started off in this field 15 years ago earning 11 cents a line for a transcription company. Today I had a 35 minute report by one of the worst dictators. On top of that her phone line is really bad. I did the best I could and ended up sending the report to QA. QA was able to fill in about half of the blanks that I had. I ended up sending an e-mail to my supe to see if anything could be done about her phone line, and if she could please listen to the report. You actually looked forward to getting the PA instead of the doctor because they were so much easier to hear, understand, etc., except for the fact that most of them have no clue when it comes to pronouncing medications and feel that it is above them to spell the medication out. They are all your run-in-the-mill dictators, dictate too fast and slur a bit, but I can usually deal with them and it does not bother me much.
