AHDI CMT prep CD Bundle Question - teeny

Posted: Mar 17, 2011

I am thinking of buying the CMT Prep Quiz CD Bundle from AHDI. but, I want to make sure it is completely current with the third edition of the BOS. Has anyone bought these and what did you think? Where they helpful in taking the CMT exam?

I notice there is an RMT Blueprint available, but sold out. So, wondering if I should just wait for the RMT and CMT Blueprints to come out???

Thanks for any info!

Dont do it. AHDI and their CMT "credential" - are just a money-making scheme. n/m

If you are a seasoned MT (and I MEAN seasoned) you should be able to pass the test just being careful to study the prefixes and suffixes very carefully. Most of the time you can figure it out using critical thinking. I am a CMT and I bought all the books before taking the test and honestly they didn't do me a lot of good. You know it or you don't. Food for thought though, after this year the RMT will be a prerequisite for the CMT, so you will not be able to skip the RMT. If your skill level is high enough, I'd take the CMT sooner rather than later. A 100% credentialed workforce will be coming sooner or later and we just have to keep ourselves marketable.

I don't have to pay for the exam, my work will pay for it. I have been a transcriptionist for about 13 years.....I guess that makes me seasoned???

I just took a refresher medical terminology class offered by the hospital I work for, so prefixes and suffixes are still pretty fresh in my brain. I think though I missed the boat on skipping right to the CMT from what I am reading, so I will have to take both.

Thank you both for your replies. I still have my medical terminlogy text book, so I'll start with that.

Skilled MTs are just as marketable without a CMT - as with. CMT is worth NOTHING.

Skilled MT's no longer marketable without CMT - GrandmaC

I would have agreed with you last year. With over 40 years extensive acute medical transcription experience I have always been hired without the CMT. Now, the hiring practices are an extra one cent per line higher for CMT's and some companies will not hire without it. It is absolutely ridiculous.

Just because you are a CMT does not mean a thing. Simply, you paid the money!

I must be missing your point. You say the CMT is worth nothing and you have had no problems finding a job without one. However, then you go on to say "the hiring practices are an extra one cent per line higher for CMT's and some companies will not hire without it. It is absolutely ridiculous." This completely proves my point.

...very helpful. It was my sole source of study material before I sat for the exam and I passed on my first attempt.

People will argue till the cows come home whether or not credentialing is worth it. For me, I am happy I'm a CMT, I'm proud of my accomplishment. I like the fact that the required CECs keep me abreast of what is happening in the industry. The CEC requirements also help me keep my skills sharp. My employer does pay a small differential for CMT which adds up to enough each year to make it worth while to me.

Even without that differential I would continue to renew my CMT.

For me, becoming credentialed is a decision I'm happy I made.

Nice to hear someone say that they are proud of it because I agree anyone should be. Some employers DO care. I see MT job openings at surrounding hospitals (but too far away for me to drive) and they state they "prefer" CMTs. I let mine run out years ago but am studying to take the exam again.

I completely agree and.... - SM

if the naysayers put as much effort into improving their skills and keeping up with the industry trends, they would realize that mandatory credentialing is coming. Regardless of your opinion of AHDI, they ARE the credentialing agency. It is up to us as credentialed MTs to make the credential mean something by being professional and exhibiting a higher-quality finished product.

I also agree that the CMT is something to feel good about - CMT and keeping it

[ In Reply To ..]
I won't get into the debate about the organization as it now stands, but I am very happy to have my CMT and plan to keep it. I've had it for years. It's something I did for me. I'm glad I did.

Feeling good about a CMT? - Collegegrad

We all need things in our life to feel good about, Girl Scout badges, etc. I feel good about my BS Degree as I worked really hard. The CMT is like taking the Driver's License test.

I just have to say that is possibly the most rude, condescending, and out of line comment I've ever seen on this board. You realize, no matter how smart, pretty, rich, or educated you are, there is always someone with MORE. Does it make you feel better to belittle people? Wow, I'm glad you are well educated (not that you can work in your chosen field apparently), but your character leaves a lot to be desired.

I guess having a BS degree does not mean you have class. Now I know, money doesn't class and and a college degree doesn't automatically mean smart with class.

CMT exam - DeeAnn

Has the new requirement of taking/passing the RMT course before the CMT started yet? I read an article that it was supposed to begin in January, but did not give the year.

Not a prerequisite EXACTLY.... - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
The way I am reading it, you can either take the RMT or a comprehensive (CQE) test for both. I think this is similar to years ago when there were two tests given. Hope this helps!

http://www.ahdionline.org/Certification/TypesofCredentials/CertifiedMedicalTranscriptionistCMT/tabid/529/Default.aspx

CMT candidates who do not already possess an RMT credential can take the RMT alone or opt for the Credential Qualifying Exam (CQE) . AHDI recommends that candidates possess the knowledge and skills identified as Level 2 in AHDI̢۪s Medical Transcriptionist Job Descriptions and outlined in the CMT Exam Blue Print before attempting to take the exam. Potential candidates for the exam are advised to review the outlines and assess their knowledge and skills to determine their readiness for the exam.

I read an article in Advance Magazine--
http://health-information.advanceweb.com/Columns/AHDI-Track/Credentialing-for-MTs-Takes-on-New-Look-New-Policies.aspx with the following quote from that article
"Credentialing for MTs Takes on New Look, New Policies By Barb Marques, CMT, AHDI-F" with the following paragraph that I was referring to---
Also beginning in January is a policy change that requires the RMT credential as a prerequisite requirement for the CMT. With this change, candidates for the CMT need to already possess the RMT or be ready to demonstrate those level 1 competencies through taking the RMT exam.

Just read the article and that is what made me raise the question.

I Personally Could Make A Bundle Except For ESL
Jan 25, 2015

The money I have lost recently arises rom very poor ESL dictators, too many of them. Did you know 28% of US doctors were not born in US and many arrived on J-1 visas under the Conrad 30 program? They are looking to expand IMGs (international medical graduates) quite significantly under Obamacare. Of course, I know non ESL can be awful, too, but think about who your worst dictators are and then consider the outlook: much higher percentage of IMGs coupled with foreign born patients who with the ...

Hey everyone! I'm looking into taking an RMT prep course to prepare me for the RMT exam and then will be going for the CMT exam later on.  I took my MT training with Career Step, but they keep pushing the time frame on re-releasing their RMT prep course back later and later.  It was due to release this August and now it will be mid-fall. I got an e-mail from M-Tec the other day about a RMT prep course they have, which was priced well and seemed to take a reasonable amount of tim ...

RMT Prep Courses
Feb 22, 2010

I have a question regarding the different prep courses offered for the RMT exam. There is one offered through OAK Horizons and one offered through Career Steps. I am wondering if anyone has used them and found them to be helpful at all or a complete waist of money. I really want to earn my RMT status, but I graduated from my mt course a little over a year ago and think that I could really use a refresher course. Any thoughts about these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! ...

What I Want From AHDI

People ask me what I want from AHDI or if it's worth being a member. I am a member. I ask myself why I still pay my membership dues and what I hope to get in return for that money. That's a tough question. Years ago I learned from their journal. I met lots of great people at conventions and seminars. Then the journal and web site started being more promotional instead of educational or professional. There was always something new that was going to change our lives if we would just sig ...
