What I Want From AHDI - Member

People ask me what I want from AHDI or if it's worth being a member.
I am a member. I ask myself why I still pay my membership dues and what I hope to get in return for that money. That's a tough question. Years ago I learned from their journal. I met lots of great people at conventions and seminars. Then the journal and web site started being more promotional instead of educational or professional. There was always something new that was going to change our lives if we would just sign up for this seminar or that set of materials or that equipment/software, etc. It's always something. Yet I still belong. Why? What are the benefits and if there are few or no benefits, what do I hope the benefits will be at some time in the future, my reason for staying in?
My hope is the organization will work to improve jobs in the actual transcription of medical documents. That's really all I want from them. I want someone to represent the medical transcriptionist who is out there trying to make a good living.
Don't mess around trying to sell me anything. I'm already paying you enough for my membership.
Don't keep changing your name or the name of what we are.
More than anything else, don't tell me that you aren't really representing us as MTs, but you are representing the medical document. I'm tired of hearing that.

[ In Reply To ..]Billy had it right, things change, this country has changed. If you feel comfortable paying your dues continue to do so. Personally I dropped all my subscriptions in the mid 90's when the hospitals wouldn't recognize them or pay for them.

[ In Reply To ..]That is what I wanted, too. Unfortunately, that is not what I got, nor do I feel it is likely to change. I said au revoir to these folks a long, long time ago and have done very well for myself. Once I stopped drinking the Kool-Aid, my MT career improved immeasurably.

[ In Reply To ..]I acquired membership through Career Step at no cost during the course. I waited until I had been working long enough to have an understanding of this industry. While this organization may fit the bill for some, I found it profoundly lacking in the one area I most cared about--the future of the medical transcriptionist. I will never pay them for membership, not even one red cent.

Now that Claudia and Peter or whatever his name was are gone, what could the organization accomplish without them? Could it be turned around and be helpful to us as MTs? Is the reason it has failed in the past because the wrong people were making the decisions? What if we, as members, made the decisions? What if we somehow made them change the by-laws so member vote was required for more than it is now. We used to have the House of Delegates (HOD) which, in my opinion, was almost totally useless. Then we had and still have the Board of Directors (BOD) which has members that are both helpful and not so helpful. Some truly are not on our side. Since the organization is there, is there a way to change it, turn it around, make it a new organization that serves us instead of just making money from us? What would it take?

What does AHDI have to do with transcriptionists? - Answer: Nothing whatsoever!

Posting it here will be seen by someone who is a higher up in the chain at ADHI but you should properly address your concerns with the right people. If you need a name I can get it for you. I no long belong for financial reasons but I still keep tabs on the group and appreciate my friends who are actively involved sharing news, tips, updates, etc.

I will be graduating from TTC's Medical Transcription class soon so I am now wondering if I should join AHDI and if I should take the RMT. I have read the information on the AHDI site which of course points to the pros of both. But I have also read posts from seasoned MTs who have not joined AHDI and some of them say that taking the RMT (or CMT for that matter) carries very little, if any, weight when locating a job. When I was a medical transcription student last winter at a local two-year college, most of us students joined AHDI at the encouragement of our instructors. My membership has expired and in today's mail was a membership renewal request from AHDI. I tossed it in the trash. I was looking for the BOS, 3rd edition. This only comes in the book format and on-line yearly subscription. It does not come on a CD-ROM. So, at the yearly price of $30, they charge you over and over again for something that we all know won't be updated until they decide to present the 4th edition. What a bunch of scam artists.
