Coding isn't typing - Redpen

[ In Reply To ..]
Coding isn't typing, and it's nothing like MT. It isn't transcribing reports.

Some coders might not use a keyboard at all. Some might enter data dirctly onto a claim form. Most use encoder software, which requires entering code numbers, selecting modifiers and whatnot, and/or entering key terms in order to get the software to provide the codes you need. For instance, you might type "pneumonia" to look up codes for pneumonias.

A lot of coders aren't fast keyboarders, but good keyboarding does help a lot. Good spelling helps a lot more, since it's difficult to get an encoder to work if it can't recognize what you're typing. Being able to understand what you are reading in the medical record is very important, because that's how you determine what happened and why, and that is what you code. If you can't understand what you read, you can't code it.

Nobody Wants A Typist!
Mar 11, 2014

I have worked from home as an MT for about 10-1/2 years. Before that, I did word processing at a large law firm for 20 years. I've been trying to find a job recently, and having a VERY difficult time. Everybody wants experience I don't have. I tried at a couple factories, and even though they will hire housewives who have never held a job before, they won't hire an ex-typist to work in a factory. Also, I can't stand for 8 hours so they won't consider me for most assembl ...

Now I'm Not Fast Enough
Jan 29, 2014

I don't know what these companies expect.  I think they all think we are robots that can be programmed.  My quality is excellent but I'm not fast enough doing VR.  I have NEVER been able to do VR as fast as I can type, but they seem to think that with VR you should be able to do TWICE as much as straight typing-- not!  I wish they WOULD just get robots to do the work-- then they wouldn't have to pay ANYTHING-- just the initial cost of the robots. With what they ...

Okay I Now Know They Are Trying To Fast Kill Me.
Apr 22, 2010

So much for the slow death, we have now been given an account because of loss of work in my account I have had for 20 years.  Given an account that is total ESL residents and PAs.  No following style of dictation.  Absolutely NOT to be found or understood who they are, much less dictating on patients not even entered correctly by their MRN.   I have not had to send anything to QA but now it is to this.  They want me to fail.  So, guess what I will continue to w ...

Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

Fast Chart And Fees
Feb 18, 2011

I applied to Fast Chart, tested and then was offered a position.  So, I read their contract and got to the fees section.  I knew they charged a 7.50 fee for not meeting your line requirement, but then there was going to be another fee after you had been there for 90 days.  This fee is calculated using some kind of formula 40.00 - (A/B)*40....A is number of lines you actually transcribed and B is the Line requirement and then there is another formula to calculate edited lines.  ...

VR Is NOT Twice As Fast As Straight Typing!
Nov 28, 2012

I used to love my job, being an at-home medical transcriptionist. I used to make around $20-25 an hour straight typing and thought being an at-home medical transcriptionist was the best job ever! The flexibility of working from home and flexing my hours was great! I could get the kids off to school, work for a couple of hours, go shopping, work for a couple of hours, just so I made production requirements and everything was great! Unfortunately, things changed and they started making us ...
