dinosaur transcriptionist - nojob

Posted: Aug 01, 2010

I have been out of the workforce for 2 years. Is there anything to do to refresh my skills? Is there a program for retraining anywhere?

Two years isn't that long, is it? Just brush up on your keyboarding skills-- can you edit? Are you familiar with Windows keyboard commands to get around the page-- home, end, CTRL + arrow keys, shift + home, shift + end, CTRL + delete/backspace, do you know all those things down pat? I've found that's as important as anything else, in editing. Those are not specific to any one editing program, they are just universal keyboard commands, but you will need to know them and use them without even thinking. As far as medical terminology or new procedures, that's another story, and that would depend on what medical field you go into. Everything else should come right back to you. (And why are you coming back into transcription anyway?!!)

transcription is the only thing I know. - anon

like a bad dream I never quite woke up from. I had done a 20 year stretch prior to that. Sounds like a prison sentence, doesnt it?

I took a "forced" vacation due to an MVA of 5 years, then took a 2-year vacation into the world of fashion and retail being the executive assistant of the director of retail for a world-famous resort. While I loved this job probably more than any other job I've had (fashion is one of my biggest passions and my British boss was wonderful), it didn't pay well at all.

I was living in a very expensive part of my state close to the resort for which I worked and, as much as I loved my job, I could barely scrape by on the salary it paid. My boss was able to get me a 35% raise and, even after that, it was barely enough to support my daughter and I with cost of living expenses soaring.

The local hospital was advertising for part-time MTs, so I decided to throw my hat into the ring even though I hadn't transcribed in 7 years. The day of my interview, I was informed that one of the full-time MTs had opted to take the PT position, making the current open position FT. I said I'd go ahead and test for it and, if I were lucky enough to get the job, I'd decide at that point if I wanted to go FT.

They sat me at a station, handed me the headphones, and cued up the jobs. I had 3 jobs; 2 relatively straightforward by non-ESL (I believe they consisted of a pulmonary consult and an admission note), and the third was a pretty heavy ESL dictating an inpatient progress note.

Once I sat down, instinct just took over and it was if those 7 years I was away from transcribing just disappeared into thin air. I finished the 3 jobs with minimal research and the supervisor had me sit back while she looked them over. She then walked me over to the main hospital to meet with the department managers, who looked over my test and offered me the position on the spot, which, when I heard the starting salary ($6 an hour more than I was making at the resort), I immediately accepted. I started 2 weeks later and, when I left a year later due to my mother's illness, I was in the process of being promoted to department supervisor/lead transcriptionist.

If I can do that, so can you. I honestly think all it takes is a little brushing up and a good memory, Dinosaur. I'd have never guessed my brain had held onto all that information from 7 years earlier, but as soon as I heard the words, it was as if my brain went into automatic mode and sent the information to my fingers. Fortunately, none of my test dictations were op reports, otherwise with all the new equipment, etc., I would have needed to spend a lot of time researching. I was lucky in that the new medications dictated in those reports were enunciated well enough so that my phonetical spelling was either correct or close enough where spell check brought up the correct medication and I was able to change it. I'm sure it would be the same for you, Dinosaur. You'll never know unless you give it a try!

Please keep us posted on how you do, and good luck to you!

And To Think I'm Now A Transcriptionist
Oct 20, 2010

In posting a reply in a different thread, it brought back a memory I thought I'd share.  I had just turned 18 and my mom had just had surgery.  I went to the hospital to visit her but wasn't sure where she was.  The nurses asked me what surgery did my mom have.  I replied, "A vasectomy."  Oh my how the nurses laughed!  They replied, "Oh no honey, I think you mean a hysterectomy."  And look at me now, been an MT for nearly 20 years! ...

Hello, Any and all comments to this question would be helpful. I am new in the medical transcription field. I have been having a hard time finding a job, and one day I get an email from this company. The email said they work for Affiliated Healthcare. I googled the company name and came up with a few hits as to what this Affiliated Healthcare company is. I transcribed a sample and sent back in. I received an email the next day stating they would like to hire me, to please reply to posting. I ...

TTS Transcriptionist
May 05, 2011

TTS is recruiting, that is ironic! - but so true to form in this business.  Every day I run out of work at some point during my shift and they say "We will let you know when it starts coming back in."  Meanwhile I am making no money.  I used to be a happy, loved my job, transcribing in the hospital - over 10 years ago.  Since my hospital farmed out to these companies that I have tried to work for - NOT happy, not even able to earn a decent living.   H ...

Transcriptionist To Coder
Nov 14, 2011

Hello everyone.  I have posted here before about this topic. I am thinking about taking a coding course, probably through Andrews, and was wondering which credential to get first...the CPC or CCS?  Which one is more desirable for employers?  If there are any other credentials I would need, please let me know because I have just started researching this.  Thank you. ...

Frustrated ED Transcriptionist
Jan 21, 2012

Frustrated that even though I have stressed my proficiency in ED work, I am still forced to do other work types first, while yet others are getting ED work types in their "pools"... I would think you would want someone who types fast in a certain area be allowed to crank that work out first and then when it runs out, let the other work types they are not so good at roll into their pool....  Frustrated ...

Veterinary Transcriptionist?
Sep 13, 2012

Hello all-   I am a licensed veterinary technician that also got a certification as a medical transcriptionist after I had my 2nd child. I am looking to work from home part time and having no luck at the moment finding a job. But as I sit here and read and ponder.... do any of you know of any veterinarians that send out transcriptioning? I don't know if it is even anything a vet office could afford, but I would be interested in it if anyone knows of anything.   OR if anyone ...

New Medical Transcriptionist
Jun 16, 2013

I am trying to find a good training program.  I have looked into career step and then a local training program at a technical program here in Denver.  The Denver program has an internship as part of the course but is not ahdi approved.  It is a 17 month program and looks thorough but I don't know how big the ahdi approval is.  I've heard that career step helps graduates get a job.  Any advice for me on this?  Thanks. ...

Been A Transcriptionist For Over 10 Years
Nov 13, 2013

I have been a transcriptionist for over 10 years and I recently started a job for a small transcription company that requires 100% accuracy for all reports.  I continually get flagged with emails saying, "Please find the punctuation mistake and apply back with why" These are most always just one or two comma mistakes in the whole report.  Do all of you turn in reports with absolutely no comma or semicolon mistakes at all or am I just an inadequate transcriptionist?  Frustrated. ...

Medical Transcriptionist
Jun 11, 2015

I researched on Indeed Jobs. At Parkland Hospital the requirement to work as a Medical Transcriptionist is to have a certificate in medical transcription or at least one year of medical typing experience. You must be able to type at least 40-59 words per minute with a minimum of three errors. You must be able to operate a dictaphone. You must have medical terminology knowledge and be able to pass a spelling test with a score of 80%. I would prefer to start my career in a hospital setting so that ...

Jun 27, 2015

I am currently studying to be a medical coder / biller. It is a long study time and tough too, but I love it. But just curious, how do we become a Medical Transcriptionist? Now that I know some medical terms and good at the computer. Maybe I can do this job as well. I have a friend who is medical transcriptionist but seem to be secretive about this career. Canadian Medical Transcriptionist
Mar 14, 2010

Can someone please explain to me why Canada is considered OFFSHORE?  We have the same extremely strict confidentiality and medical data security laws and, in fact, tougher standards in the definitions with Independent Contractor versus employee status.  Why is Canada considered offshore?  It's not nearly like sending something to India or Pakistan where you don't know who is working on the dictation or what the ulterior purpose is.  Why can't the two countries just get along? ...

Medical Transcriptionist Resume Help

How Does VR Make Sense For The Transcriptionist?
Sep 10, 2010

Company A pays an experienced transcriptionist/MLS 3 or 4 cpl to edit VR.  Company A boasts about how this makes for a faster turnaround time on everything.  Company A tries to tell seasoned MTs with years of experience that their productivity will actually go UP if they learn to be good little VR editors. Company A apparently fails to realize that some transcriptionists can also do basic math pretty well, and can see that they are actually getting paid less to d ...

Old Fashioned Transcriptionist In A Digital Age.
Apr 06, 2011

Greetings to all. I would love some insight and advice from all you younger MTs who have been working online from home. I actually picked up and dropped off tapes and transcription every day. They have now switched to digital records using a tem ...

Medical Transcriptionist Week - WMX

Just wondering if anyone from WMX is betting on a token gift for MT week.  Last year we got the Pharmaceutical Word Book to install on our (their) computers.  Did appreciate that.  The year before we got nice BBQ aprons with their logo on it.  This year we got yet another reduction in our ISR wages.  Hoping that was not supposed to be our gift.  I know they don't have to give us anything and expect we might get a general company-wide E-mail telling us how REMA ...

Low Wage For Inhouse Transcriptionist

Transcriptionist Skips The Big Jobs...
Sep 01, 2011

Having an issue at work - one person skips the "big" jobs and leaves them for the rest of the transcriptionists to type. I personally, if I know for sure she did, I will skip it as well, but we have a girl working from home who gets so mad and wants me to do something about it. I have no idea what to do. We all have been told by my boss (I am the coordinator) to do the jobs as they come in, and not to skip them. She denies skipping jobs, as well all do, but she does do it.  Her personality ...

Pathology Transcriptionist Take On Matters
Dec 07, 2011

Is gross pathology transcription considered too advanced for a newbie?  Interviewer wants me to have updated immunizations (would need at least 4 shots!) and I would need to schedule a physical (usually takes months w/my doc) and I don't know if it is worth it.  HR went dead silent when answered I have never done pathology transcription (not encouraging) and my gut reaction from the phone conversation was that I would not be a top candidate.  Of course, then there ...
