Medical Transcriptionist Resume Help - Annie
Posted: Aug 30, 2010
I would really appreciate any help you are willing to give me.
I have not been having much luck finding a job and am getting desperate. I am wondering if my Resume may be putting me at the bottom instead of at the top of the contact list. I have over 30 years of experience and my resume contains the names of 15 companies that I have worked for (I sometimes had 2 or 3 jobs at one time, but I include everyone because some were Acute Care and others were Clinic Specialties).
I am looking for Employee status, so this question is directed mostly to anyone who has recently applied for Employee status work. However, if you are an Independent Contractor and would like to respond, I would appreciate hearing from you also – just indicate that you applied as an Independent Contractor.
I know having periods of time missing can put up a red flag, as well as the perception of “job hopping,” and I am at a loss as to how to balance my resume to make it more in line with what the Human Resources Specialist/Recruiter/Agent is looking for.
I have read on some “how to apply for a job” or “how to prepare the ultimate resume” sites that although you should cover all years continuously (evidently being unemployed is like having leprosy for employers), some also say that 10 years is sufficient. Others state omitting jobs that are not directly relevant to the job posting (like a job working for a grocery store when we are looking for work as a Medical Transcriptionist) can also be omitted, with some kind of note with something like “unrelated positions not included – all-inclusive resume available upon request.”
It would be nice to know if you were offered a job after you interviewed, but that is not my main goal. Right now, all I really want is a chance to talk to the Human Resources Specialist/Recruiter/Agent after they look at my resume. Some places test, but others only have a Resume to go by, so there is a lot riding on that one document.
Questions:
Have you received a call/Email after sending in only a resume with the following on it:
1. The names of all the companies you worked for, but NO DATES
2. The names of only the companies you worked for in the past 10 to 15 years (even though you have more than 15 years of experience total)
3. Omitted the names of non-pertinent companies
When you had that initial interview, did anyone question your resume, such as “why only 10 or 15 years” or “why did you leave out dates” or “what companies did you work for during the periods that you left out.” Are those things really imperative for the Human Resources Specialist/Recruiter/Agent to know before they offer you a job?
Thanks so much for any help you are willing to give this desperate Medical Transcriptionist.
Feel free to Email if that is your preference.

Hi Annie, You've asked some very good questions. I am a former HR director in health care and have reviewed hundreds of resumes for postions at all levels.
Keeping your resume as short as possible (one page) is important. What is most vital is your most recent experience, your most relevant experience for the specific position you're applying for, and highlighting what sets your qualifications apart. I would emphasize the positions you have held in the last 5 years or so, simply noting that you have an additional 20+ years experience as an MT, with details of past employers and positions available on request. You could include a summary statement of what kinds of MT experience this entailed, but just a brief summary of specialties, etc. I would totally eliminate non-MT positions; they are totally irrelevant for someone with 30+ years of MT experience. DEFINITELY include dates. It immediately raises a red flag if you don't include the dates that you worked for the companies. Again, the employer will be most interested in what was going on in the last 5 years or so.
It is important to CLEARLY state, preferably early in your resume, what specialties you have worked, in what kind of environment, and any special skills you may have. Short and sweet is best - otherwise it gets lost in all the verbiage, and they will likely toss it aside in favor of resumes that clearly and succinctly state the important facts.
If you would like some feedback on your specific resume, feel free to contact me and I will be glad to review it.
Employers want someone who will - stick around

So if they see all those companies they will think you are a job hopper.
First, put a summary at the very top saying so many years of this and so many years of that. With the number of resumes that MTSOs often get you'll be lucky if you get them to look at that.
Just eliminate all but the most important or longest lasting employers.
Don't include small part time gigs unless they are relevant to the type of experience the company is looking for.
Fudge the date by a month here or there if you only worked somewhere for a couple months and just eliminate that short employment.
Make one resume focusing on clinic work experience and one for hospital if you have to and then send the appropriate one based on the job posting.
Don't include everything way back when either. Companies want someone who knows how to transcribe for today's standards, not 20 years ago.
Hope that gives you some ideas!

Medical Transcriptionist Updating Resume ... Apr 11, 2011I am updating my resume, and I am wondering if I should include Acute Care experience.
I do multi-specialty clinic work and H&Ps, Discharge Summaries, Consults, etc. for various Veteran's Administration hospitals and clinics.
I would like to say I do Acute Care on my resume to beef it up, but because it is for the Veteran's Administration, the Acute Care reports are usually for things typically related to older patients. No trauma-related stuff, only minor surgical procedures.

New Medical Transcriptionist Jun 16, 2013I am trying to find a good training program. I have looked into career step and then a local training program at a technical program here in Denver. What Should I Put On Medical Transcription Resume Oct 17, 2011I am a fairlly new graduate. I got a job right away, worked there for 3 months, and turned in my resignation last week. From the beginning there was no training, little communication and very little work. I did have my share of mistakes also. I'm now looking for another job. Should I put this job on my resume? I have no other transcription jobs on there and to me 3 months somewhere is better than no jobs. But I don't think they'll give me a good reference if they're contacted ...

Canadian Medical Transcriptionist Mar 14, 2010Can someone please explain to me why Canada is considered OFFSHORE? We have the same extremely strict confidentiality and medical data security laws and, in fact, tougher standards in the definitions with Independent Contractor versus employee status. Why can't the two countries just get along? ...

Medical Transcriptionist Week - WMX May 14, 2011Just wondering if anyone from WMX is betting on a token gift for MT week. Medical Transcriptionist - Taxes? Jul 09, 2012I'm looking for information about what to do if you get a part-time job where you are not an employee, but make over $600 for the year, but they do NOT provide a 1099. This is a case of a man who is looking for my help in providing his transportation to medical appointments. He seemed clueless when I asked him about these options. Then, I was thinking. Well, when a contractor came to my home and installed a fence, I paid over $600, but did not provide him with a 1099. Is there som ...

25+ Years Medical Transcriptionist Considering Apr 29, 2013Hello: I am 58 years old and have been doing medical transcription for 25+ years. Can You Relate? My Experience As A Medical Transcriptionist Oct 19, 2011I've been an MT for 12 years. I started out with MedQuist as a subcontractor. Life was great! Then came employee status and being performance managed, VS, crappy software, overworked supervisors and nit picking about being literally 10 minutes late for work or getting heavy points taken off my quality score for typing "were" instead of "was." I went to Focus, which was then taken over by Nuance, and the same experience as above started happening. So I went ...

NATIONAL MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST STRIKE! .. Feb 19, 2015As MTs, we have seen over the years how our jobs just keep bottoming out more or less. Companies are taking advantage of us while they "suck up all the money" that is paid out by healthcare facilities; we just "don't count." On top of that, companies are now trying to turn us into ICs supplying our own software programs AND equipment. In 25 years of doing this, I have not seen line count pay increase one iota quite frankly. The only thing I can think of is ...
