best company...or maybe the best of the worst - newbie

Hi guys,

I have just gradded from an MT course and was looking through the postings here and there are a lot of horror stories. Just wondering what places you would recommend working? I have an interview with assistmed coming up but read some things about nonpayment. Any input in to a good company for a worker in canada would be great.

I can't recommend ANY company, they're all - bad. MT has become a scam job.

Not far removed from the scam schools that have the gall to tell people there is any future at all in medical transcription.

My heart goes out to you newbie. You worked hard to come into an industry which has unfortunately went from a good job to exactly what this poster has called it, a scam job. There was a day when MTs were treated like the talented individuals that they are and they were paid fairly for the work they provided, but not anymore. Now it has become a plethora of companies scamming to get anyone they can to work for them for very little money while they rake in $$. If you continue on with your journey into this cesspool, you will soon start to feel the psychological effects, as so many do. You will work long hours for no money, and soon start to feel like you are worth nothing. You will miss quality family time just to sit around and wait for work that may or may not come, and when you do get the work, it will be so crappy you will be lucky to make $3 an hour. The good dictators have moved on to speech rec. All that is left is garbage the engines can't decipher. You will be hired for day shift but then told if you want work you will have to be flexible and work when the work comes in which equates to evenings and weekends. They will lie and tell you it gets better, but it doesn't. You may start to become slightly good on an account and maybe see $4 per hour, and then they will soon send your work away either to another company, voice rec, or offshore. It is truly a scam job. You could probably make more money per hour by doing surveys on line for a living and you don't need to do schooling to do those. The schools still pushing MT courses are yes, shameful. M-Tec, one of the most reputable schools out there, shut their MT school doors because they themselves seen the direction this job was going and knew where it was heading. You have already been scammed by the school who took your money telling you there were good jobs in this industry. Don't be scammed again and waste your time looking for a 'good' MTSO to work for. They don't exist. Go to your local hospitals/clinics and try to find a job on site. There are still a few jobs left out there. Don't waste your time and give up your soul to these on-line companies. Listen to the warnings on this board. Many have 'been there done that' and have had the life sucked right out of them through their journey. They truly are looking out for you. The ones you see on here singing praises are the scam companies themselves working the scam. Just steer clear of it all and save yourself. Go find yourself a dignified job! God speed my friend.

I worked for an MTSO for many years, many promises were made, "was going to make a lot of money" and treated like dirt. I became a lead and had lead pay taken away because I made too much money. I worked 18-20 hours a day and not paid overtime because I had to make sure accounts were cleaned out. When I gave up being the lead, I was threatened with cutting my hours, putting me on the night shift, etc.

Benefits were cut to non-existent. They over hire so you cannot make your minimums in order to get benefits or keep them.

They mess with your psyche, you start to question your abilities and sadly I worked so hard for a certain company that I now regret the time I gave up with my family in order to help make a certain MTSO (who advertises here a lot) successful. I was made to feel guilty all of the time.

My hands now hurt, my back hurts and my legs get very stiff and I owe it all to transcription.

I agree with the above poster, find a job outside of medical transcription.

Your best bet is to try to get on with a hospital - in house. - (sm)

I know, you probably got into this because you wanted to work at home, but the best place for you is in house, a hospital or a clinic. Good luck.

I wish the posters above were exaggerating, but every word of it is true. For the most part, while I was transcribing for MTSO, I did make above minimum wage, my W4 said I made 23,000 last year, but that's way below what I made in this field back in the 90s when I first started!

I had planned to stay with my ex-MTSO until I graduated from college, but it just became unbearable for me to sit in front of the computer anymore.......the treatment and harassment, the lies, etc. I have a very strong will and love transcription, but my ex-MTSO drove all that drive and will right out of me.

Listen, I took this past Thanksgiving day off, that Friday and Saturday (used PTO) only to be told my by ex-supervisor that I was short hours on the transcription system...........well duh, I was short I missed three days and my ex-supervisor had used some mathematical calculation to, "prove" I was short on hours.........well duh I wanted to spend time with my family for a change and I participated in a 5K on Thanksgiving morning............so that was my warning about being short on hours............In other words, you can't take a decent vacation without being harassed about working.
I didn't argue with my ex-supervisor about her calculations, but that was the straw that broke the camel's back, I started looking for another job......and got blessed to work in a clinic M-F, transcribing on Mondays and Fridays and seeing patients Tues-Thurs.
Please listen..........you don't want to work at home for an MTSO, they take advantage of you in every way imaginable!

Oh I forgot to comment on QA! You don't want to have to deal with QA. They must think they are gods...........degrading, lying, condescending, untouchable gods........... in their own little minds! I repeat, you do not want to work for any MTSO at home!

I work full-time, attend college part-time, workout at the gym 1.5 to 2 hours per day 5 to 6 days a week, and still have quality time with my family and friends now since I don't work MTSO service anymore! I actually went out to eat with my church family last Sunday, relaxed, and wasn't rushed for time, since I didn't have to rush back home, to sit to wait for work........Next month, I am running another 5K and spending time with my family on the weekend without using PTO, since I don't work MTSO anymore. If you want to have a life............do not work for any MTSO!

I have been an MT for over 20 years and have worked at a few different companies. I am currently with DSG, and I just have to say, DSG seems to have the WORST dictators of any company that I have worked for. I work on 5 different accounts for them and it is all the same. Lately I have not bee doing well, short on line count, a few bad audits, I am in the dog house. I now have a fear that a I too will be let go. It is hard to work like this, wish I could just quit, but cannot right now, maybe in a few months, unless they terminate me. I understand the policy, 150 LPH, but sometimes I just cannot make it, dictators are bad, unfamiliar accounts. When it is good, it is good, but when it is bad, it is bad! I guess I will just keep plugging along until other wise :( ...

What if the extremely lower than ever volumes (OOW on 3 accounts at a time) is because some of the acute worktypes are being converted to ambulatory care WT since more and more patients are kept in observation status or "extended recovery" instead of being admitted. W(c)ould not some of those same-day surgery types perhaps be called ambulatory? We would likely be kept in the dark about that just like everything else, don't you reckon? Don't ever work for this sham of a company, who decides at the drop of a hat to drop wages to minimum wage base and then gives a pay grid to aspire to, all the while tying your hands behind your back with no work and no pooling. I have worked for Nuance a long time ago. They had e-scription and it was the worst program i have ever been in. I had to check, check, and double check the demographics and God forbid if there was something i had to correct! By the time i got to transcribing, i had already wasted a half-hour. Anyone else with this experience? And do they still have it? ...

Now I've heard it all. Patient is 53 yo female, lives alone in a mobile home. Sprained both ankles, unable to bear weight on either ankle. If it just me, or does Superior Global have the worst Supervisors and QAs? They all send feedback like crazy, no one is on the same page, they can't keep track of what is going on, beg people to work and pay them NOTHING. I have never seen anything like this.
