Transcription Services that Provide Equipment - ame

Posted: Sep 30, 2010

Does anyone know of any transcription services that provide the computer equipment?  I tried the ones I found on this board WebMedX and SoftScript (bad reviews on SoftScript) and Proscript which is an INDIAN company!  I do not own my own computer.  I am quitting MQ and will have to return the equipment, or will I (wink wink).

My first thought is... if you're in a profession in which the only way to perform your job is with a computer, why don't you have a computer? I cannot tell you of any companies that provide the actual computer, as the ones that I have worked for (only 2 in 10 yrs) use internet-based transcription programs/software. However, I know there are some out there, but as you apparently have already discovered, they are far and few between. If I were you, I would invest in a computer and you will give yourself MANY more options for employment. Not having a computer to do a computer-based job is ridiculous.

Try Precyse. I used to work there and they provided mine.

Thanks, I appreciate a name of a company rather than a post that states it is ridiculous that I do not own my own computer by a person who does not know or understand my circumstances. I will check out Precyse. Was it a good place to work? I assume you worked there before ASR/VR became an issue?

I just found out that Precyse is hiring BUT their accounts have high volumes of speech recognition/editing. But they provide the equipment. No thank you. That is why I am leaving MQ because of all the SR/editing.

Not able to AFFORD a computer on MT/ME wages!!! - ame

[ In Reply To ..]
I CANNOT invest in a computer as I am broke. That is why I chose MQ as an employer because they supplied the equipment. I was simply asking if anyone knew of a transcription service that provided the computer for their home-based transcriptionists like MQ does. I used to work in hospitals/clinics. I only just started working at home 4 years ago with MQ. So No it is not ridiculous I can't afford a computer especially since my wages were cut in half when ASR came out and I am now an ME instead of an MT, and by no choice of my own I might add. Maybe you have unlimited credit cards or cash or whatever, but I clearly do not. I support me and my kids by myself and can barely make the rent and bills anymore since my wages have been cut in half by MQ!!!!!!!!

Just to let you know, you can have a local - sm

computer tech build you a computer for a lot less than buying one from a major company. I just had one built that is comparable to anything out there for just under $500.
Also refurbished on line - sm

I purchased one for just under $400. Equivalent of gaming computer except for video card.

...but... if ya ain't got a penny, a nickel is too much...

Try Goodwill (sm) - Long time MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Goodwill in most of the larger cities usually has a separate computer store where you can buy refurbished computers very inexpensively.

Interesting suggestion about Goodwill. It might be difficult to find a computer there with the specs a person needs, otherwise a good idea, especially if you need a monitor.

company-supplied computers - profmt

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not going to say never, but I don't think I would work for a company as an employee withought a company-supplied computer. I think a company that is serious about protecting medical records would supply computer to employee.

To work on a personal computer that contains personal medical information about patients is not secure.

I understand the OP's concerns were that she cannot provide her own computer, but as employees, we should be supplied with all necessary equipment, software and hardware, to carry out our obligations in compliance with HIPAA regulations, compliant by employee and employer.

My first thought is... - Have a Nice Day

you'd better be careful that you don't fall off of that high horse of yours, because you could really get hurt.

That being said, I own a personal computer. However, I would not want to take the chance of something happening and facing a costly computer repair or replacement with what many of us MT's are making these days. That is precisely the reason why I selected a company that provides computer equipment. Providing an employee with computer equipment also would save time because the necessary software is usually already installed on the computer, allowing the employee to begin immediately (except, of course, for a possible set-up call from the IT department).

You are also mistaken about companies that supply computer equipment being "far and few between", as one MT below has listed quite a few of them.

Lastly, you don't know everyone's personal situation, so please don't come on here making nasty and condescending remarks about what everyone should have. At the same time you were typing this paragraph criticizing someone, you could very well have named these "far and few between" companies of which you ARE aware.

:-)

I own a PC but would not want to use it for work. I agree that a work PC should be used exclusively for work. There are HIPAA and confidentiality issues to consider, the MTSOs ought to be aware of this. I could probably afford to purchase a new computer but it should be provided by the company if you are their employee, IMO.

Wow that's a big help. Now at least I have a good place to start looking for a new company to work for that hopefully supplies the equipment that I cannot afford to buy. Thanks very much!

I think it is so nice of you to provide all of this information. I work for TransTech and they do not provide a computer, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

I can add one more to the list... - Carmen

SOAP Transcriptions provides a computer and foot pedal, but you are required to sign a 2-yr. contract (last I heard).

You can take Amphion off your list; they no longer supply computers. They "gave" current employees the computers a while back, so now all antivirus, Word updates, foot pedals, repairs, etc, are our responsibility.

They supply mine...have they changed this in the past - couple of years? (NM)

When I interviewed last year with Archivus, there was no mention of them supplying a computer.
