How much to invest in transcription equipment? - Undecided

Posted: Jan 14, 2010

I would like to pick up a part-time job transcribing at home, with the hope of eventually working full-time at home.  I've looked at job ads online, but it seems a lot of them won't allow Windows Vista, Windows 7 or even Microsoft Office 2007.  I have a laptop with Windows 7 and Microsoft office 2007 plus I have free Wi-Fi Internet at my apartment complex.  I also have a desktop computer with Windows XP but I have only MS office 2007 and my computer cannot connect to the free Wi-FI.  I would have to buy Internet service.   Does anyone have advice about how much equipment I should invest in to transcribe at home?  It doesn't make sense to downgrade, does it?  I see that some companies even ask for a C-phone.  I do have a foot pedal and a few Stedmans books.

equipment - questions

Do you plan to work as an IC or an employee?

Don't know much about the equipment you would need as an IC, but as an employee, it would depend on what company you work for, and they would more than likely supply the software they use. I would not purchase a C-phone unless it is absolutely necessary. Some foot pedals do not work with all software, so that would depend on your company also. Seems most companies still prefer the Windows XP and Windows (not sure about Windows 7 though as it is new).

I assume that you have completed an MT training course either online or at a community college.

Employee Status - Undecided

I think I would prefer employee but would accept IC, as long as there is some flexibility with the hours. I've have graduated from an MT program and have been working as a FT employee on site for about 5 years and I really would like to transition to working at home. My desktop computer has Windows XP but it does not have internet service on it. I use my laptop forthe Free Wi-Fi service, and so I wonder if I should spend the money to have internet service connected.

Wifi - annuder mt

As the poster above stated, most companies and their platforms will only run on Windows XP. As far as the wi-fi connection is concerned, if several people are sharing the same connection, that is not considered a secure site. What I would suggest doing is getting either a DSL or cable connection and you could then have your own wireless router with a secure connection. That way, no one can tap into it without them having the password to do so. HTH
Thanks for all advice - Undecided

Thanks everyone! I will consider getting some type of internet service. I just don't want to spend money into having this service and then I'm still having trouble finding work. I really would like to transition to working at home. I know being onsite has some pluses, but my job doesn't offer the opportunity to work at home and my my coworkers do not "complete" me.

My advice - wait until you receive a job offer - I was stupid

Stupid me, I thought I'd invest in the equipment to go IC PT. I researched what employers typically want; full of enthusiastic zeal I bought a used PC; I bought copies of Word 2003 and 2007 (since its about a 50/50 split on which they want), Steadmans Spellchecker: I bought a USB footpedal, I even bought a used C-phone from ebay. I was READY! Guess what - months later, still applying, no job offers. Nobody is impressed that I went and bought what they require in advance, it gives me no clout at all. If and when I ever am able to obtain a PT IC position, then I can sell the C-phone if I don't need it, but I'll be stuck with the cost of the software forever. Meanwhile, if I apply for anything that requires something I don't have, I'll just state that I'm willing to purchase it IF and when offered a job. Don't be stupid like me - research the products and the cost, but don't waste your money on hope and buy anything in advance.

Transcription Equipment

Hello.  I am looking for advice on equipment.  I need, well, almost everything,  I need a playback program, I don't like express scribe.  I am willing to spend money, I don't have a lot, but I want something good.  It doesn't have to be the best, but user friendly would be nice.  I also need a footpedal.  I have heard they are all the same, but I would like further input to the statement.  And, I must have a good pair of head phones.  ...

Question On Transcription Equipment
Sep 12, 2011

I have always worked in-house at a hospital, but now want to try to get work-at-home.  What equipment do you suggest for taking transcription tests?  I know I probably need a foot pedal, but what other equipment do you use.  Seems like it would be hard to transcribe from wave files in Windows Media unless you have foot pedal and good sound quality.      ...

Mt Equipment
Apr 13, 2011

I have been doing outpatient surgery reports for a small hospital for four years.  They are outsourcing with a company that does voice recognition.  The ophthalmologist has talked to the OR manager and wants to use me for some other transcription (the hospital pays for what he does there).  I need to know the cheapest and best route to go since I only have computers, printers, and an Infinity foot pedal, as well as two transcribers that use microcassette tapes.  In order to p ...

All This Equipment We Have To Buy
Feb 16, 2014

why do they keep gouging us for this crap even though it should be painfully obvious to anyone with half a brain that your average MT has hardly any money for it? Amphion had told me that my workstation was not up to snuff, and after they specified what I needed, they told me *where to buy it*. I ended up sinking almost 300 bucks into it. Then, after working there for a couple weeks, they micromanaged me intensely, and after a performance review where I missed the mark by probably about a fra ...

Trouble With MQ Regarding Equipment
Oct 12, 2009

Hi everyone. I am having trouble with MQ regarding equipment and I'm hoping someone could maybe help me out here. I used to work for MQ and had returned my equipment after leaving. I was re-hired a few months later, but used my own equipment, therefore, never took anything back or received anything from them again. The returned equipment was returned over a year ago and I no longer have the receipt from UPS, as I never heard anything and had no reason to think there was a problem. Any ...

ADVISE ON EQUIPMENT
Sep 17, 2010

Hello, Can someone please tell me the best digital transcription machine to buy. I really do not know anything about digital transcribers. I am used to the cassette transcriber. Also, I heard there was a way to have a 1-800 number and the doctor can call that number and do the dictation over voicemail. Does that require any other software or equipment. I am not familiar with any of this. I guess I just really need to know the different ways I can do transcription. Thanks ...

Stenoscriptionist--same As MT With Different Equipment?

Ok, so against my better judgement, I have accepted a position with Nuance for PT work.  I say that only because after reading all of the "bad" reviews I am a little nervous about it.  But, I am willing to see how it goes.  So paperwork is done and turned in and today I received a Kit with footpedal, headset, software including Stedman's spellcheck, medical dictionary, Quick Look drug book.  FOr those in the know, are these items paid for by myself at some point or is th ...
