A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
OK. I would like to comment on the posts below about "soccer moms" pretty much causing the demise of the MT field.
I am an instructor at a community college that teaches medical transcription. Let me tell you, it is NOT the "soccer moms, jonny's mom, mary's mom, etc" that are bringing down the MT field as what was implied below. What is bringing down the profession is dense people who walk into this field, literally walk into it, and instantly want to work from home and think they can with a snap of their fingers. On the first day of class, I always ask each student what their goals are after graudation, and about 95% or more say they want to work from home, period. Also, out of probably 25 to 30 students, maybe 10 or so are moms, or moms that have young children at home. No on-site experience first, no nothing. They just see the glitz and the glamour of it so to speak and they think POOF! I can stay at home AND work too and it will be just as easy as pie. They do not take into consideration the hard work and dedication it takes to work from home.
As an instructor, my first advice to the students is to go out and get some experience in-house first. I feel that that is VERY important to learning the ropes of transcription as well as education for it. You have to know A LOT of medical terms, English, etc. as you all know. Also, you have to be self-sufficient. We all know that it is so easy to put off work and put off work because we are at home and can do it later.
I think that the posters who stated that the mothers that just want to stay at home and then "work on the side and not take their job as a career" should step back. I actually found those posts extremely offensive.
Not only am I an instructor, I am 28, and have a 2-year-old and a 3-year-old. Let me tell you, I wear both the hats in a day as mommy and then as an MT. I have never, ever worked so hard at a job in my life FOR MY KIDS. If you work hard and are dedicated to the profession, you can still be a great mother and have a rewarding career that you work hard at.
Please do not blame it on the "soccer moms". Who we need to blame are the lazy people that want everything handed to them on a silver platter without having to work at it.
