New Stentel MT/ME employee ??? - Jeff

Posted: Apr 26, 2012

Hey folks!

This is an amazing forum. Even for the SPOUSE of a MT!! You guys have answered many questions I/we have had over her time with CSteps and now as a new hire.

Here is a fairly nebulous question. I am curious and wondering if someone out there would have some insight. Can anyone tell me what my wifes first month's pay will look like? She started at Stentel April 1. They only pay once a month. She gets .03 per line. We are just wondering how much her first check will be... Any ballpark ideas? I have zero clue how many lines she has edited. She also does MT. Although only about 10% of the time...

Thanks for all the great info everyone!

Jeff

Well, there's a lot of variables.

Is she an IC or a regular employee? If an IC, her check should be the gross amount of whatever she produced during the pay period. Be sure to allow for about a 20% kickback to Uncle Sam for those IC taxes though...OUCH.

If she's a regular employee, deduct about 15% from her gross and that should be in the ballpark of her net pay, depending on your deductions, how many dependents you claim, etc.

3 cpl is pretty low even for editing. I hope her straight transcription rate is at least in the 8 cpl area.

Also, a friend of mine worked for either Stentel or Stenomed, I can't recall exactly which at the moment, but she ran out of work pretty consistently. Finally, her account just dried up one day with no explanation and she was left to hang out to dry. If your other half doesn't feel she's getting sufficient work, make sure she keeps the lines of communication open with them to hopefully avoid that scenario.

Tell her welcome to the world of MT. Hopefully everyone here will give you and your Mrs. a warm welcome :-)

My wife... - Jeff

My wife is an IC. She just graduated from CSteps in March so she is very new. I am just curious is all. She is an amazing worker. Every job she has ever had ended with her boss or owner in tears because she was leaving. She graduated with high honors (whatever that means!). She just needs to get her feet wet. I hope she keeps looking for better opportunities.

If you look to the left, Jeff, you'll see a board just for New MTs. I'm going to say you most assuredly must be correct about your wife. If you read some of the posts on the "New MTs" board, you'll see it is sometimes very difficult for brand-new MT to get hired as quickly as your wife, so you both should be very proud of her accomplishment!

Yes, once she has about a year under her belt, so to speak, she'll have the experience to be able to successfully spread her wings a bit and command a higher pay rate. The important thing the first year is to remember it's sort of like a paid internship; the pay not be terribly good, but she's gathering that all-important experience she needs and, with that experience, comes the ability to secure jobs with higher pay.

As I said, a lot of very good new grads have great difficulty being hired on, so you and "Mrs. Jeff" should be very proud of her ability to graduate in March and be hired just a month later. That really is quite an accomplishment!

Good luck to the both of you, and hopefully your other half will post here as well and let us know how she's faring with her newfound career :-)
Don't mean to jump in youre thread, but wanted to - ask AuntieAnxiety how the new

job is going with Accentus? I hope all is still going well with you and you're lovin it.

It's always nice to see someone post with a good experience and you were very happy with your outcome.

Thanks for asking...I'm still loving it! I've been so busy I've rarely had a chance to even look around and post, LOL!

I really believe I made the right decision in choosing Accentus over Nuance. I love having "exclusive" dictators and knowing every day what I have to look forward to; no more crossing my fingers that there's enough work in the pool and, if there is work in the pool, that it isn't just the dregs no one else wanted to do. Not dealing with a pool really does a lot of relieve this job of some of its stress, that's for sure.

I would strongly encourage anyone looking around right now to apply with Accentus. So far, it's turning out to be an awesome place to work, from the recruiters to the QA to the team leaders.

Thanks again for asking...as of right now, I'm still a very happy camper at Accentus :-)
Thats Great AuntieAnxiety!! I wish you many, many - happy years to come with them.

If I was'nt already settled, I would sure be applying.

Take Care!

Say what?! 3 cpl as an IC?! What's that after taxes now?? - Flabbergasted

That is just gross exploitation. I don't care if a person IS just starting out and needs to get their foot in the door. That is just deplorable.

Welcome your wife to the wonderful world of transcription for me. I'm curious, though, if she's only making 3 cpl editing, what is she making for typing?

Jeff - Say what?

At that rate of pay, she would be better off flipping burgers. Good grief.

5 to 5-1/2 per line for straight transcription/ 2-1/2 cents per line for VR.  Are they out of their ever-loving minds?  Anyone would be better off at a beginning clerical job that requires no skills at $10 per hour PLUS a couple of benefits, even if that just means you are an employee and have your taxes (i.e., social security, medicare) and other state/federally mandated business costs covered by the employer.  It just keeps getting ugiler.  And truly, are we supposed to ...

Stentel Pays Pretty Low
Nov 02, 2014

I understand that Stentel pays pretty low, but I am wondering if they are negotiable or if their platform etc still allows you to make more money that a company that pays a little more. How is their incentive plan if they have one? I do see that the actual cpl isn't always the bottom line. Any info appreciated. ...

Stentel An Awful Company!!!
May 01, 2015

I just need to vent.  I have worked for this company for 7 years and can't believe how terrible they treat their ICs.  I thought they were a decent place to work but they have now shown otherwise.  I have worked under 3 other account managers and never had any problems.  Then, I get moved to my current manager and instead of getting paid more, I go from 0.07 cpl to 0.06 cpl, and this manager cannot be satisfied.  Oh, it doesn't matter if I do good quality work, ...

Possible That I May Be A MQ Employee Soon

Can anyone tell me what I am looking at if that happens, trying to figure out if I should be looking for employment elsewhere.  here are my main questions:  1.  Is there a starting pay or is everyone paid differently? 2.  Is there a schedule or is it flexible? 3.  What kind of benefi ...

Which Is Better, Employee Or IC?
Dec 16, 2014

I am a part time employee of an MTSO. In California the min wage is $9/hr, which means at 0.85/line for editing my LPH must add up to $9, while MTs in other states may only have to make $7.50 or so to remain employed. My Team Leader said that is somewhat unfortunate for me; as a 1 year out-of-school newbie I'm not as fast as other MTs.  A few years ago I was an IC and I recall they did have a minimum line count per day but I don't recall having to produce more than ...

Statuatory Employee
Apr 27, 2010

Curious to know if anyone on this board is a statuatory employee with the company they are working for and outside of the company paying your SS tax and FWT, do you get any type of benefit, i.e., PTO, health, etc. Is it strictly just for tax purposes?
