Got a new kind of rudely worded in places contract from company I've been with a little bit. I don't care about agreeing to 98% on quality audits, or agreeing to provide a certain number of minutes/lines of work a day and specifying which days, or agreeing to 24-hour TAT, but there is a section that we must respond to e-mails or any other form of communication within 5 minutes during active work hours, otherwise without an acceptable excuse (power/internet outage or emergency) after third or fourth violation contract will be terminated. One of the examples given of an unacceptable excuse "I decided to watch my show and left my computer for an hour, sorry." Then it goes on to say, "If you are going to be unavailable for more than 5 minutes and might miss that email or phone call, email us and let us know."
Now, we aren't out and out asked to commit to certain work hours , just to indicate days available and how many minutes/lines we can do, but to say that we must answer e-mails within 5 minutes during "active work hours," isn't that pretty much saying you need to be at your computer from 8 to 5 every day? I'm an IC.... I might go to the store, go for a walk for an hour in the morning, do laundry or clean my bathroom, pick up my kids from school, all which take more than 5 minutes. This just doesn't seem right.
