Looking for suggestions, returning to MT after 6 months off - VetMT

Posted: Feb 21, 2013

Last summer, after being laid off from my hospital MT job due to cost cutting in our department, I went back to work in the office, working as a receptionist for a family practice.  I was also transcribing the office notes and correspondence as well.  At Christmas, we were told that the doctor had decided to sell his practice to the local hospital.  We were promised raises and I particularly, because of my 20 years as an MT, was promised a position doing MT for the hospital.  January 1st the hospital took over and no one received the promises raises and I have yet to be offered the hospital MT job.  We have received emails from HR at the hospital stating they reviewed the pay standards for our community and felt we were also being compensated fairly and thus no raises were deemed appropriate.  They have offered to let me fill in on weekends and vacations for which they will pay me the hourly rate I am receiving now which is paultry.  I took a pay cut when I accepted the receptionist job, but I figured it was better than nothing and the office is 7 miles from my home.  But now with the empty promises and disappointments, coupled with the office politics that I've had to put up with, I'm ready to come back home.

I would like some suggestions for a good company to work for.  I am a single mother and I want to find a place where I can earn a decent living and the work doesn't run out.  I value honesty and communication.  Any suggestions?

...alas, right now, many of us are trying to get out of transcription into a receptionist, clerk or any type of medical "secretarial" job or billing/coding or better. MT pay has gone down terribly. No work also. Please do read both boards, main and company, at least, to see for yourself.

Thanks for all your responses. I've never stopped reading - VetMT

the boards here at MTStars even after I switched gears went to work as a receptionist. I know the industry is dying a slow death. I just hoped that maybe there was some glimmer of hope, some company that was actually paying decently with steady work.

I'll probably take the advice of the poster below who suggested I keep my job and maybe work PT for a service and see what happens.

I did the math last night and figured that if I were on unemployment and welfare, I'd be making about the same income which is pathetic! So maybe I can hope to get fired :) Then I'll be able to work as an IC on any schedule and supplement my unemployment checks.

It's just so depressing. 20 years ago when I started out, this profession was my dream job. I loved what I did, I was good at it, and we were well respected and compensated well for our abilities and knowledge. For anyone who says they cannot understand what the big deal is about offshoring, take a look at your paycheck and the job ads, and you will see what the big deal is. Offshoring has effectively killed this profession.

Thanks gals! Good luck to us all!

I'm not sure you are going to find that. - sm

I don't believe there are many places where the work doesn't run out and those places are usually well-staffed and those MTs aren't gonna leave their job or give up their job info. I would choose a different path with you being a single mother. This field isn't guaranteed money by a long shot anymore.

Sorry for all the lies you - were told. I have no

suggestions, other than to tell you that MT right now is the worst I have seen it in 30 years. I hope you can find something that will pay enough to support you & your family. Also, I wonder how well the HR dept in your hospital is being compensated? Jerks.

advice about where to apply. I can tell you that this board is particular is extremely negative and discouraging to most who come here and IMO you should make applicagtions and use your own judgement on whether or not the job will suit you. If you are productive and accurate, you will probably find something that works for you. The negatives on this forum will advise you to give up. Use your own judgement. You are the only one who knows what will work for you.

BE HONEST - we all know this profession has taken a nose dive.. - lack of work, no benefits, low pay

She is a single mother don't give her false hope. I have left a good paying job to come back because of promises made to me and "all the money" I can make. All lies. IMO she should keep her job and maybe go part-time transcribing to supplement her income.

Not everyone is in your situation - oldlady

and the work situations varies greatly from region to region in the US. I work for a local MTSO who is very good to me, decent pay, good benefits, and a fair, altho not guaranteed amount of job security. Only the OP knows her situation, her region, her skills, and her opportunities, both locally and on a national level. If she went by most of the posts on this forum, she would give up before she started, which is never a good idea.

You get out what you put in. and if you give up, you are guaranteed to get nothing at all.
Who are you kidding - - I work from coast to coast

Three accounts and it is difficult to make a decent living with all three due to lack of work. I work long hours so don't say you get what you put in - we are being taken advantage of and we are the ones making money for the MTSO's. You may be in our position one day, and then what will you have to say.

Such gloom and doom here - beentheredonethat

So hard for people to get reasonable responses here anymore about the MT profession. I've been doing this for almost 40 years (this July). It's changed but totally DISAGREE with the exaggerated talk of it not being a legitimate way to earn a living.

Do you have anything in writing re the promises made? - nm

what you have for the uncertainty of what's out there once you "come home." The rates are so low now, along with out of work situations, nothing is guaranteed. Maybe stay where you and apply for PT positions to check some of the companies out. There aren't many small ones left as they've been gobbled up by the big 2 (Mmodal and Nuance). Unfortunately 20 years' experience means nothing anymore. Good luck!

I made this decision 3 years ago and - have regretted it ever since.

I made a decent hourly rate in an office which started out as MT but transitioned to front office. I was promised the same amount of pay with a small transcription company working from home so made the change. I have yet to make even one paycheck equal to that of my office job and with each day that passes, my office skills are more "out of date" as practices are choosing the candidates with more recent experience.

Like somebody else said, MT is the worst it has been in at least the 17 years I've been one and I don't see it getting any better. I actually interviewed with a company that is on the cutting edge of doing away with it altogether. The job was for someone to help retain MTs during the transition even though they were going to be let go within a year or so. I was definitely not a good fit for that one.

At this point, I'm starting from scratch with outdated experience in anything other than MT and that is no longer needed to get me in the door anywhere.

There is a lot of truth on these boards. I always thought it was sour grapes too until I experienced it firsthand.

Good luck to you whatever you decide.

DON'T DO IT - oaf

Stay put. At least you know what you are making. The pay in our industry is getting lower and lower. I would stick with your present situation. There is no future in this business.

Amen sister. - It has gone ...

down the toilet. We have become slaves to our computers waiting for work and making peanuts. Pay cut after pay cut, loss of benefits because minimums not met. Not a good profession anymore.

Seeking Suggestions/advice For Returning To Transcription Field
Nov 09, 2010

I have been out of transcription for almost 2 years.  Long story, but a combination of health problems coinciding with job loss due to cutbacks.  Anyway, I worked for 3 years transcribing for local multi-specialty clinics.  I realize now that was probably a mistake since everyone is hiring for acute care (which I have done but that was 10 years ago).  I have recently seen some companies that are hiring for clinic transcription, but I need to "refresh" my knowledge and skills ...

Returning To MT?
Jul 06, 2011

I was a medical transcriptionist from 1999-2006, and 2007-2008.  I worked in a regional health center; did all sorts of reports. And then suffered major burnout. I'm working retail and not really getting by at all.  So, I'm considering the once-unthinkable: Returning to MT. My problem is that I'm not up-to-date on things - the latest procedures, drugs, instruments, anything. I have no idea if my typing skills are up to snuff. I do know I want to do at-home work again as ...

Returning Equipment To MQ
Apr 29, 2010

Recently resigned from MQ and received the mailing labels to ship back their computer and monitor.  However, per the letter, they don't require that you return the mouse, keyboard, and any other peripherals.  It doesn't say you will be charged for them -- it just says they want the computer and monitor. Has anyone left MQ and kept the keyboard and mouse?     ...

Returning To MT After 10 Years Away
Aug 07, 2010

I was a medical transcriptionist for about five years in the late '90s.  Now that my kids are both going to be in school full-time, I'd like to go back to work.  I was able to get an old set of SUM tapes and a transcriber on ebay, so I'm going to be spending the next few months re-learning what I've lost over the years.  At the same time, I will be calling around town to see if I can find some work.  I used to do a lot of chiropractic, which was really eas ...

Returning To MT Work.
Mar 13, 2015

Morning everyone (or afternoon, depending on time zone).  I'm returning to MT home work after a 2-year absence for family health issues. Have there been any mind-bending changes in the 2 years that I have been gone??  Is VR still 4 cpl?  Have dangerous abbrevs changed? Is the basic 9 cpl still in effect?  Also, what is the download for MT testing (something like express scribe -- I can't remember).  Anyway thanks for taking time to read this.     ...

Thinking Of Returning To MQ After A Few Years....
Oct 13, 2009

Moderator- PLEASE dont delete! An MTSO that had always had a great rep.  The changes have just been coming hand over fist of late, and I am wondering if the higher pay at MQ may be worth the switch back to be able to have my normals and DQS.  Im frustrated and watching my paycheck dwindle at this MTSO even though they have been good to me otherwise.  I quit MQ with the cesspool and horrible QASAR and inconsistent QA.  Any comments or MQ updates? Former Teacher Returning To MT Field

Returning Computer To Imedx.

WMX - Returning Equipment In Original Boxes
Mar 01, 2011

Been Gone From MQ For A Few Months Now
Dec 17, 2011

I've been gone from MQ for about 5 months now, working at the front desk at a local group of docs office.  I learned how to schedule patients and meetings,  take payments, do the office bills, and file claims and bill insurance for patients and I've got to say, I never gave a thought to much of the person working the front desk.  I have been yelled at, threatened, given dirty looks and was once even told that I was an "old, ugly hag".  All this usually happens when ...

Been Gone From Nuance For Several Months Now
Aug 14, 2013

I have to say the stress level went down almost immediately. I went on to be a CNA and though physically harder work, there is room for growth financially and moving up into another position. Not so with Nuance. Growth potential at this place was zero-more like they try to keep you held down as much as possible. I loved transcription when I started 10 years ago, but this company made me dread even looking at my computer. Good luck to all those who are still here. Prayers for you as you struggle ...
