Returning to MT work. - DaddyBearMT

Posted: Mar 13, 2015

Morning everyone (or afternoon, depending on time zone).  I'm returning to MT home work after a 2-year absence for family health issues. Have there been any mind-bending changes in the 2 years that I have been gone??  Is VR still 4 cpl?  Have dangerous abbrevs changed? Is the basic 9 cpl still in effect?  Also, what is the download for MT testing (something like express scribe -- I can't remember).  Anyway thanks for taking time to read this.

I also returned to MT work from my home after 2 years. I was working for a hospital in house and made 23.00 an hour and went down to 10.00/6.00 due to awful dictators and awful VR. In the past year, I have worked for 5 companies just trying to get in 30 hours a week without running out of work. The going rate is 6.5-8/4-3.5. I have 15 years experience and mostly 100% QA scores with an occasional error and still was nitpicked to death.

I've had to give up and found work outside of the house. Read the company board. With all this said, if you still want to give it a go - yes, DL Expressscribe. Make sure you get 2 jobs with 2 different companies so when you are out of work you have a back up. Go to AHDI and order the new BOS.

Thanks "Don't Do It". I appreciate the feedback. All in all, maybe nothing has really changed for the better. We still work like maniacs for the O-Holy-Line-Count.

in the other direction. I have been at this for over 30 years now and I am looking for a job as far away from medical transcription as I can get. The good old days of transcribing in Word, uploading to single clients, having a good relationship with them, getting a decent compensation .... gone. I dread opening my work email every single time. Low morale, low self-esteem, low pay.

Joannie: Thanks for the note. I know exactly what you're talking about. I have 30+ years and remember with fondness how great being an MT was in those early years -- respect with a capital R, good money, and enjoying what we were doing. Maybe I should re-think this return to this world.

1. Mind bending changes: Yes. Voice recognition, point and click charting and offshoring.
2. I think VR is 3-4 cpl but not 100% certain.
3. I work on site and my facility's dangerous abbreviation list is still the same.
4. I don't think anyone pays 9 cpl anymore as it's 99% voice editing and very little straight transcription.
5. If you use MT test, you won't need to download express scribe but some companies may send you the voice files separately and you will need it then.

I agree with the others, don't do it unless you don't care about making money. My MT job went away and I moved into a QA role but I'm still counting the days until I can retire and get out of there.

lots of luck with that. i did transcription for about 20 years and liked it. had surgery, was out for a while and when ready to come back was informed that the job was gone. they had got a new computer system which enabled the doc to do his own notes. the gov is pushing for such. that is happening all over the place. have not had any offers except one for prn to which i did not even respond. i miss working, money, people and all that but at 74 probably time to hang it up anyway. hope you can find something that fits you.

Returning To MT?
Jul 06, 2011

I was a medical transcriptionist from 1999-2006, and 2007-2008.  I worked in a regional health center; did all sorts of reports. And then suffered major burnout. I'm working retail and not really getting by at all.  So, I'm considering the once-unthinkable: Returning to MT. My problem is that I'm not up-to-date on things - the latest procedures, drugs, instruments, anything. I have no idea if my typing skills are up to snuff. I do know I want to do at-home work again as ...

Returning Equipment To MQ
Apr 29, 2010

Recently resigned from MQ and received the mailing labels to ship back their computer and monitor.  However, per the letter, they don't require that you return the mouse, keyboard, and any other peripherals.  It doesn't say you will be charged for them -- it just says they want the computer and monitor. Has anyone left MQ and kept the keyboard and mouse?     ...

Returning To MT After 10 Years Away
Aug 07, 2010

I was a medical transcriptionist for about five years in the late '90s.  Now that my kids are both going to be in school full-time, I'd like to go back to work.  I was able to get an old set of SUM tapes and a transcriber on ebay, so I'm going to be spending the next few months re-learning what I've lost over the years.  At the same time, I will be calling around town to see if I can find some work.  I used to do a lot of chiropractic, which was really eas ...

Thinking Of Returning To MQ After A Few Years....
Oct 13, 2009

Moderator- PLEASE dont delete! An MTSO that had always had a great rep.  The changes have just been coming hand over fist of late, and I am wondering if the higher pay at MQ may be worth the switch back to be able to have my normals and DQS.  Im frustrated and watching my paycheck dwindle at this MTSO even though they have been good to me otherwise.  I quit MQ with the cesspool and horrible QASAR and inconsistent QA.  Any comments or MQ updates? Returners: Are you glad you ...

Looking For Suggestions, Returning To MT After 6 Months Off
Feb 21, 2013

Last summer, after being laid off from my hospital MT job due to cost cutting in our department, I went back to work in the office, working as a receptionist for a family practice.  I was also transcribing the office notes and correspondence as well.  At Christmas, we were told that the doctor had decided to sell his practice to the local hospital.  We were promised raises and I particularly, because of my 20 years as an MT, was promised a position doing MT for the hospital.  ...

Seeking Suggestions/advice For Returning To Transcription Field
Nov 09, 2010

I have been out of transcription for almost 2 years.  Long story, but a combination of health problems coinciding with job loss due to cutbacks.  Anyway, I worked for 3 years transcribing for local multi-specialty clinics.  I realize now that was probably a mistake since everyone is hiring for acute care (which I have done but that was 10 years ago).  I have recently seen some companies that are hiring for clinic transcription, but I need to "refresh" my knowledge and skills ...
