Does anyone out there work for this company? Archival posts suggest she does not pay until she gets paid by the client - and her contract would support that. Any real time incidents of how often this happens? Need a job and have been offered a job there. Thanks.

I have no experience with this company but I would - Not accept a contract like that

There are way too many variables that only she controls. As a contractor/independent business person, you should set the terms of payment, not her. You don't tell your plumber the terms of payment when you hire him, he tells you when payment is due. This is the same situation or it should be. If this were a true IC position, you would invoice her at the end if the month and then she has 10, 15, 30 days to pay ... Whatever time frame you decide on to put in your contract. If she doesn't pay you until she gets paid by the client, you could be looking at a lag of a couple of months at least between invoicing her and getting paid. Those are unacceptable terms in my world.

I once worked for company that paid me - once she got paid by the client

and my bills are due every month on certain days no matter what. I always had to get a cash advance on my credit card to pay the bills and when I finally got paid by her I would pay the credit card bill off. That was my experience with this type of payment. Now I work for a different company and get paid on set pay days everytime with no fail. This is more professional and reliable in my opinion. If a company does not have enough overhead money to cover salaries, etc. I would be a bit hesitant in their practice. We all want to get paid for the work we have done. When she gets paid, I think that's her problem not mine and she should be able to cover my pay regardless.

That has been my experience and of course my opinion!

Thanks for input - zia

I will submit a revised contract and let her respond. She, of course, could reject it, but I need a paying job. This is business, not charity.
Good luck to you! Unfortunately for me it was - that way or no job and

I took it because I needed a job. I lasted quite a while but it wasn't an ideal situation having to do the cash advances all the time.

Exactly. YOU realize it is a business, but she thinks she is the charity to which you will contribute. The mere fact that she would propose an arrangement like this shows either (a) a lack of professionalism or (b) a case of opportunism or (c) both. I bet if you run this by your legal counsel, he or she will tell you absolutely no way, no how.

There is absolutely no reason for this kind of an arrangement. I was an MTSO in Colorado and California for nearly 40 years. Virtually any MTSO worth his or her salt will have a business line of credit at their bank for times when revenues run low. There is absolutely no reason to make an employee wait for their pay. My answer to this is that you performed the work you were asked to do in a timely way, and you need to be paid on a timely way. What you do is your own choice, of course, but I would run away from such a deal so fast my legs would break. That they want to push their responsibility onto the MT is simply unethical. What if the doctor or hospital whose work you are doing goes bankrupt? Not a likely a possibility, but it does happen. And why should your finances be messed up because an MTSO is undercapitalized. If you want to take risky financial ventures, put your money in the commodities market, but whatever you do, please don't settle for a deal like this. Just my experienced two cents' worth. (And you might ask this person how long they have been in business, can they give you references from some MTS CURRENTLY working for them, and why is the firm so undercapitalized?) Just a thought. If the MTSO will take advantage of you in this way, they will likely do it in other ways, too. Keep looking. Good luck!

She offered me the job two weeks ago and sent me the paperwork. I sent the forms back 10 days ago and cannot get a response from her. Something funny is going on here.

I worked for her for a while and had trouble getting my money. I would not recommend anybody or anyone to work for her.

I worked for her, and she says she didn't get paid on an account and doesn't know when she will get paid, so doesn't know when she can pay me.  Excuse me, I didn't work for that company she subcontracted from.  I worked for her.  She should pay me no matter if she got paid or not.  Then she can do what she has to do to collect her money.  I have other friends and know multiple people have quit there over her not paying in a timely manner.  When w ...

GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION
May 17, 2010

Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession.   I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India.   Now all that's left are transcription companies here in the U.S. that don't want to pay much more, lie to us and tamper with our line counts.   GET OUT, GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION! ...

A Day Without Transcription?
May 28, 2010

It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand. Impossible, I know, but I bet employers would sit up and take notice. ...
