Do the rest of you find, being paid only per line, - that its nearly impossible to enjoy time off?

Posted: Nov 06, 2009

Another poster stated they only get paid when they type (just like the rest of us).  Since going from per-hour to per line wages, I've been finding it nearly impossible to take any kind of a break whatsoever, whether it be a day off, or an hour break.  I make so little at this, that all I can think of while doing anything other than typing, is how much money am I losing.  Do you, too, start feeling guilty about unchaining yourselves from your desk for even the shortest periods?  When I take a day off I don't spend any money on entertainment or anything, but even if I'm in the garden, taking a walk, or riding my bike, I feel like I can't afford to be doing that.  I feel that the work-at-home, slave-wages job of MT has a lot of insidious side-effects that are detrimental to our health:  inactivity, tension, worry, depression, you name it.  Back in the days when I had a *real*, inhouse job, it was great to be able to leave it all behind you at the end of the day when you walked out the door.  Now, we're haunted every time we even glance in the direction of our PC desks.

time off and my holidays, at the equivalent of my hourly rate. This is why I choose not to be an IC.

I'm not an IC, I work for a big company, too. - Our PTO is paid in lines. -sm

But recently I've been dipping into the PTO lines just to pay my bills.

I'm assuming this is an adoption event? Wish you luck in finding "furever" homes.

It is furever homes and mostly kittykats also - Lynne

I have 3 of my own, wish I could take more but this brings me so much joy. It is an adoption event. These are all fully vetted before adopting out.

I have 16 myself. There is such a great need in my area and not enough adopters.
There is no way I could keep that many here and - Lynne

mine are all inside, you cannot keep outside ones here where I live. The worst thing about that is we have coyotes all around so kitties would not stand a chance around them. I work with a lady who probably is the most animal loving person I have ever met. She has a passion for rescuing. She is a young girl around 25, I am old enough to be her g'mother but she is just a lovely person and I applaud her for all she tries to do with them. We, like you, have huge needs here and ours only a drop in the bucket to what is needed. I only wish people would spay and neuter here. It is a little chilly here this morning so I am waiting for a little more warmth in the air before I start out.
I just rescued one yesterday in my yard. I wanted - AnonRescuer

to get her before winter. Another dumped cat. I have 20 myself. Not so much by choice but there are no places for these. I work with a rescue but they don't have space. And this is an adult cat. I am thinking it is a female but she has not let me get close enough yet to check. People want kittens and they dump them as adults. They are quick to say crazy cat lady but they're happy to dump their cat on you.

Of course, all are neutered and have been vaccinated.

God bless you, as well, AnonRescuer - KrazyKatLady

You are a person after my own heart. I have rescued and rehabed several ferals. I, too, love saving animals and giving them a second chance. God bless you for your kind and generous heart!

We had a banner day today with the rescue adoptions - Lynne

Thought we had all kittykats today but had 1 dog that the family decided either did not want or could not keep anymore. We found a home for the doggy and also about 8 kitties. The lady I work with lucked up, found a lady in NY that pays for all vetting of animals. They are spayed/neutered, have all shots, even microchipped prior to leaving out. Forms are filled out if ever a problem to get back in touch with us and we would take back. I spent my entire day just sitting out on a nice warm fall day snuggling with the kitties. Thanks to all for the kind words about what we do. This all started just from our love of the animals.

I know how you feel... - make much less with PTO

[ In Reply To ..]
I work for a big company and get paid my average rate for PTO, but I usually don't qualify for the production bonus that I usually get if I take time off during the week, so I lose money if I take a day off. I don't enjoy my time off as much because I am stressed about how much less I am making just because I wanted a day off or had something else I had to do.

I agree - db

Can't enjoy time off - blbarb

[ In Reply To ..]
My answer is "yes." I also feel guilty if I take an hour away. It takes it toll physically-getting zero exercise-eating less and less and still "obese." Oh how I detest that word! Tried to set up a sewing area so I can work on a quilt, but got so far behind on lines that I can't even look at the sewing machine. I emphathize with you all.

what time off? - 7DayMT

[ In Reply To ..]
one day I want to have that again. Time off now is taking a shower and cooking dinner. I'm always checking my lines and calculating what I made and trying to figure out how many lines I need to make enough. Didn't used to have to do that.

Yes it is true - I agree with you and

I also find myself telling people I can't meet them for lunch because I'm paid by the line... I can't do anything because I'm paid by the line..........they don't understand and then I said "pennies" and they still don't understand but yes it's ruined my life in some ways and saved it in other ways because it allowed me to keep an eye on my children.

I Would Like To Hear From QA Being Paid By The Line.
Jan 06, 2011

I've done QA in the past but it was for an in-house position, paid by the hour.  Production wasn't being monitored at that time and in that situation. Now that I've been working from home as an MT being paid by the line, I'm going back into QA. I'd like to hear your production averages per hour/day/week, what your current rate is or what that averages out to for you an hourly$ basis.  I know it can vary just the same as it does with MT.  Sometimes there ...

Does Anyone Work ONLY QA (no Typing, No SR) And Get Paid By Cents Per Line
Jul 26, 2010

This is probably a dumb question, but please no snide remarks.  If you do not have any constructive comments, please move on.   If you only do QA and are paid by cents per line (NOT hourly), how do you make any money or plan your day.  Are you not dependent on how many reports other Medical Transcriptionists send to QA?  So, if everyone is just spot on and only 1 or 2 reports make it to QA in an hour, how do you make any money?    I saw the ad on the Job Seeker& ...

Experienced MTs; Paid By The Line Or By The Audio Hour?
Jun 11, 2013

I've been an MT for over 5 years and have always been paid by the line. I would think that most MTs preferred wage is to be paid a set amount per hour.  If this were not an option, what has given you more of an income, paid by the line or by the AUDIO hour?  What I'm currently being offered per audio hour comes out to less than what I was paid per line at my previous job, but the reports are easier to understand so it may be worth it.  It is basically both ...

Sample Contract For Employee Status Paid Per Line

Before Nuance, What Was The Highest You Were Paid Per Line/digital Minute/etc.
Oct 07, 2013

I'm just curious, I've been in this business for a long time now and haven't seen a raise in QUITE some time, but I sure as he!! saw higher paychecks than I see here. So, I'm curious. What's the highest rate you've been paid to be an MT? What were your daily requirements too, if you can remember? I'll start, my highest was $2.05 per digital minute and we were only required to do 65 digital minutes per 8-hour shift.  ...

I Was Hoping To Find Some Info On How To Increase Line Count
Jun 30, 2012

but from the posts, I can see that everyone else is in the same boat I am.  I can only agree that this is the lowest paying MT job I've ever had and that the constant haranguing about working extra over the weekends is completley annoying.  I worked for 5.5 hours for Nuance the other day and made $47.  I then worked for a private client for 2.75 hours and made $82.  If only he had more work for me!  Unfortunately, I'm expecting him to go on the EMR this year an ...
