Sample contract for employee status paid per line - Confused

Posted: Dec 15, 2012

The company I transcribe for has agreed to pay me per character line now instead of hourly rate, which is much more productive for me!   Question being, do I submit my line count to them and how do they deduct my taxes still???  Where could I find a company contract for them so that we both understand that I'm still their employee but paid cpl and a flat rate when doing office tasks once in a while?  Thank you for any samples/help.

Shouln't they be furnishing the contract?...SM - Old Anon

As an employee, THEY should create an addendum to your present contract and submit it to you for your signature. As far as how you designate your clerical time, you need to work that out with them ahead of time. Whether you invoice for this separately and they combine your invoice with their line count calculations OR you invoice for both your production and your clerical time would have to be worked out between you and the MTSO. Leave nothing to chance and TALK to the MTSO, then get everything in writing.

Thank you for your response! Yes, I totally agree "they" should be presenting me with a contract, but I've been trying to negotiate with them since Oct and so they told me to figure it out and they'd comply...so here I am hoping to find answers, otherwise I'd be typing for $10/hr forever!!!! They are just a small clinic and have always just paid hourly, but I have no benefits unless I work 40 hours, and so on my calculations, line count pay would be more beneficial. I notice lots of companies on line here advertising for employee status at a line count rate, but not sure how they do the tax deductions, etc, so I was hoping someone had a sample of how it is done.... Thank you....

Taxes would be calculated the same way they are now. You're taxes were withheld based on your gross of ?$400 per week, assuming you are paid weekly. I don't know how much they are willing to pay per line, but say you grossed $600 per week working per line, taxes would be taken out on that amount. If you are an employee, tax deductions are based on how much you gross. I am an employee and have a contract with my MTSO stating my line rate, etc. Are you assuming because you have a contract, you will not be an employee anymore? Even employees have contracts. Having one does not necessary make you an IC. Is that what is confusing you? As far as a contract goes, you can do a google search for sample MT IC contracts. It does not have to be fancy; just needs to state how much per line they will pay you, pay dates, do you have to invoice or are they going to figure out your line count and multiply that by your line rate or do you need to invoice them. As far as charging them for time spent doing clerical work, you might want to built that into the line rate you are asking for. Any more questions, post back.

Employee Versus IC PT Status
Nov 23, 2009

I have an interview tomorrow with a company for PT employee status.  I have been an IC for many years and love it.  I am a bit concerned about going employee as I am used to the flexibility of being able to take time off for my kids' school parties, fall, winter and spring breaks and such without it affecting my job.  Can anyone give me a clue as to how employee status works and if some companies are more flexible than others?? Question Regarding Employee Status
Dec 04, 2010

I've been an IC MT for 10+ years and, as such, I have no benefits, but LOVE the flexibility of being able to do what I want/need during the day as long as the work gets done on time.  When you are an employee working for an MTSO, do you have any kind of flexibility?  If your scheduled work time is 8:00-4:00, do they allow any flexibility for such things as 15 minutes to drop off/pick up your child from school?  Or an hour to go to an appt?  I see a lot here where there i ...

Question About Employee Status
