Anybody else here from SPi America? - Has it been particularly QUIET for you too?

Posted: Sep 21, 2011

No work.  No manager.  No info on switchover to Acusis.  Nothing.  Anybody else feel like they've been deserted?

SPi - MT45

I just received a call yesterday from my manager that Acusis is laying off all of us who worked on Mercy Medical Center accounts, effective Sept. 30. We are supposedly getting a small severence package.

As a former SPi employee (they bought out my MTSO), proceeded to lose the major account I was on, and I was "let go" as they had no other accounts for me. My former PM said they were sending a lot of work overseas. I did get severance pay and an offer for a good reference. Put since they are being run basically by Company in Phillipines, I bet they are offshoring ALL their accounts, so they can make more of a profit - Sorry, but I would start looking for another MTSO quick.

They aren't really being "run by a company in the Phillipines" - They ARE a company in the Phillipines

[ In Reply To ..]
The U.S. office is just a BRANCH of the Phillipine company.
SPi isn't even a company anymore. They have supposedly been bought out by Acusis but final - has not been closed yet.

Yep - Used to work there

Frankly, I'm surprised that SPi still even exists. I haven't heard a peep about them in ages. They bought out the MTSO I used to work for way back in 2006. Shortly after the buyout, work, managers, and accounts started gradually disappearing with no explanation as to why. People were quitting left and right. There was a good month where I didn't even have a manager or an official contact person. It was not a good situation at all. I finally got so fed up that I left towards the end of that year and went with another company, who I've been with ever since. It's a really good thing that I left when I did because I found out that they had a massive layoff a couple of months later. I'm sure they were shipping work overeseas. I would get out ASAP.

bye-bye SPi - raydonia

Yes, Spi is shortly to be no more. The reason Acusis did not finalize the deal was they promptly lost their biggest account, Mercy, and didn't want the liability of unemployment compensation for employees they had just barely hired. So they dragged their feet as Transcend transitioned the Mercy account to their platform and we all got let go. Bye-bye and better luck at Transcend, if that's your choice!

So sorry to hear the bad news. I left SPi MANY months ago (almost a year now) and honestly don't ever want to look back. Just had a bad "feeling in my bones" and I went with it. I have to agree with the off-shoring, because that's what I was finding too, especially with ALWAYS running out of work and having to use my hard-earned PTO time in place of it just to get my pay. Not fair to anyone. I do wish you the best of luck!!

Acusis only wanted the accounts - they don't really - need the MTs. Work is slow there right now.

Seriously? You are surprised?
I left that company years ago. They are OWNED by a foreign company, I hardly think that the American MT would be a priority for them. They offshore and the work sent back to the States is atrocious. Clients don't seem to care... well I guess some of them do because SPi lost those accounts.

I used to work there too. - Bad memories.

CyMed was actually a nice company to work for before they were bought by SPI. Things went downhill fast!!! At first I had no account manager and worked independently. Then I had 5 different ones in about a year. People were quitting and being fired and laid off. Accounts were being sent to the Phillipines (we had to train them to take our jobs by the way). The first 2 accounts I worked on, I dearly loved. They lost them. The last one, I really liked but they sent it overseas. Then I just hopped around from acct to acct all day long. I had been an employee for 9 years. When they figured out I was NOT going to quit - they laid me off with severance and UE.

They even told BIG CLIENTS to take their business elsewhere, I am assuming because those clients did not want their work offshored.

The worst thing about them was you had to work 8 hours per day, strictly required, but there was not much work and you had to clock out when there was no work. So basically you would spend 10-14 hours a day trying to get in 8 hours of work. I was so fed up, I was glad to be leaving. One other poster was right in that even if you had an AM, you never heard from them, EVER.

Funny, I think they really did look for a reason to fire me. I had audits once a week, which had never happened before. I don't know if QA knew what was going on or not, but I read on one of their memos with my audit, "AS USUAL, this MT is 100%." I think they were involved in the "letting go process" when possible, and they did not like it.

I had 4 weeks PTO, health, dental, life insurance, and retirement benefits. POOF!! Gone. They did say they were sorry though. They are a perfect example of a sweat shop, taking jobs from US MTs, tax revenue from our country, and contributing to our economic decline.

I remember CyMed well - Been there

I worked for CyMed for nearly 5 years and I stayed on board for several months after the SPi buyout hoping that things wouldn't go from bad to worse, but they sure did. I always used to get paid a differential for working second shift and weekends, but that suddenly disappeared and no one would answer my phone calls or emails about it. I also had about 3 or 4 different managers within a 3 or 4 month period of time and you could almost NEVER could get in touch with them, and when you did finally get a hold of them, they were completely useless and clueless. Both my primary and secondary accounts continued to have very little to no work, which never used to happen before SPi. We all know where the work was going. I had never seen such a mass exodus in my life. Everyone was leaving and I finally did the same as soon as I found a much better company to work for. I remember I couldn't even get a hold of anybody there to give them my 2 weeks notice and I kept getting called for months after I left asking why I wasn't working my shift! It was unbelievable. I was so glad to get out of that situation. CyMed was always a pretty good company to work for and I never had any real problems with them. It's so sad to see generally good companies being swallowed by money hungry, offshoring companies like SPi.
SPi - us all.

I have to say, everything everybody said above is true except maybe an understatement. The heads are beginning to roll in management now and US MTs have been given their pink slips. QA are now awaiting to hear their fate. We are all expecting to be canned, even though we were told by our lead that Acusis was taking us all, but if she cant open her mouth without tellig a lie so who knows. I think Acusis is just getting a hold on what a mess they are buying into. Good luck to

I was one of the SPi MTs that got the dreaded call this week and letter. We also were told that Acusis was buying SPi and for weeks and weeks we thought we had a position at Acusis with no interruption in health insurance, even had conference calls about that and they said insurance was being grandfathered in. Even had us send insurance forms to them. Come to find out there were no openings for our team at all so lots of MTs now no jobs with Acusis. What a mess.
I also was with CyMed - Yikes
[ In Reply To ..]
I was with CyMed for almost 3 years and I remember that conference call in the summer of 2006 when they announced that SPi was taking them over. They kept saying what a great thing it was and how excited everyone was for the "merger." They promised that nothing would change and the only difference we would notice would be the name of the company. Ha! What a load that was. As the weeks and months went on, things definitely changed, and not for the better. I remember the day that fall when my manager of 2 years (who I loved) sent out literally a one line email saying that she was leaving. It was completely out of the blue and no one saw it coming. That was it. That's when I really knew something was wrong and it was time to get out. I'm sure glad those days are far, far behind me.
Ditto Yikes - delilah

I agree with everything that Yikes had to say. Including the time line the same thing happened to me except my manager was an idiot and it took them longer to get rid of her. I was gone before she was let go. In that 2006 conference call they kept repeating "NOTHING WILL CHANGE"...hah, that was a good one. Of course the person who said that was one of the first to go!

DTS America, TO ALICIA

I never run out of work, as a matter of fact, they call me almost daily to work extra.  I've never had any problems with them, I do my job and do it well and they leave me alone.  The only ones I ever hear from are the help desk, and again, it is always to work extra.  They often send e-mails offering OT for certain accounts that tend to get backed up quite often.  The pay is good and they offer incentive for both PT and FT.  Just curious, did you get a job with the ...
