! Supervisory Position - Aghast

Posted: Jan 05, 2012

Anyone else stunned by the incredibly lengthy list of job duties for a listing for a Sup on a certain website?  It was so long it gave me a headache.... They want ALL of that for only $1400 every 2 weeks!  Good grief, I make more than that transcribing.

If they offered me $1400 every 2 weeks because they "wanted all that," I would tell them, "The people in hell want ice water, too."

Supervisor? - endo

And to top off the low pay, this position is IC!

Wow, illegal much? - Happy MT Robin

[ In Reply To ..]
I haven't seen the ad, but am I the only one that thinks it is probably highly illegal to have someone acting as a supervisor for your company and yet have them be an "independent contractor?"

The pay isn't great, but it works out to $17.5 an hour, which in my neck of the woods is really good for a lot of positions like that. Sad.

Why? - Alice

[ In Reply To ..]
Why would it be illegal? And what does "highly illegal" mean -- is that like being "slightly pregnant?"

My local cable company hires ICs to do installs and other highly technical work, many times supervising other employees of the company.

To my knowledge a company can hire ICs to perform in any capacity it wishes so long as the line crossing into employee status isn't crossed. Then they get into trouble with the IRS and the Department of Labor.
IC supervisor for MTSO - Happy MT Robin
[ In Reply To ..]
My thinking that it's illegal is because as a supervisor, you would be expected to provide a fairly specific shift of hours. Unless the MTSO is willing to have the IC supervisor dictate what hours they are working, then that is the first violation of the IRS rules. The second thing is that the supervisor would be working with materials (software in the form of the MTSO platform) provided by the MTSO in order to function as the supervisor for the MTSO.

I could be really wrong and if someone has some really good examples that pertain to something else like this situation, please do let me know, but I think in this particular instance hiring an IC as a supervisor for an MTSO would send up huge red flags for the IRS.
All ICs I know - Alice
[ In Reply To ..]
All the ICs I know who are contracted with MTSOs use software provided by the MTSO or by the client themselves. How is this a violation of IRS rules?

Cab drivers are also ICs, and they use (by contract) the car, dispatcher, board (where they pick up the calls), company logo, etc. -- again, all provided by the company. Without those materials/supplies the cabbie wouldn't have any calls routed through the company, just like we MTs wouldn't be able to do the transcription without the requisite software.

Again, please explain how this is a violation of IRS rules?
That's the question, isn't it? - Happy MT Robin
[ In Reply To ..]
The IRS guidelines are very vague and there has been a lot of discussion as to whether ICs hired by MTSOs are legal or not.

Like I said, I could be wrong - wouldn't be the first time, but that was my first impression.

You can outsource ANY position. Contractors are hired all the time and given parameters in which to complete the job. That does not necessarily make them an employee. Time to brush up on the rules.

Having any sort of supervisory role as an IC would raise all sorts of red flags for the IRS.

So $700 a week *$1400 every 2 weeks)is considered *bad* pay and *not good enough?* An MT claims to make *more than that transcribing?* A lot of the posts about the MT business having gone down the tubes, poor pay, *wouldn't advise it*, and other such remarks now causes my hand to spin. Make up your minds people! Is the pay good or not good? I'm an IC and my company offers 9.3 cents a line but usually I can't produce/type more than 5000 lines a week and don't bring in anything close to $1400 every 2 weeks. I'd take $1400 ANY day if I didn't have to work 11 hours a day!
typo - Beentheredonethat

*head* spin, not hand. LOL
Pay Rate for Supervisory Position - Another BTDT
[ In Reply To ..]
Trust me - the $700 / week for this position isn't enough. You'd be expected to work much more than 11 hours a day and 40 hours a week. This is why the pay is specific in the ad - so the company doesn't have to pay more than what is stated for the position.
That is GROSS, not NET. - Clarification
[ In Reply To ..]
I am the OP.

Maybe this will clarify things for you:

$1400 NET (that is POST taxes) is good money FOR AN MT and enough for me to live on. In order to CLEAR $1400 every 2 weeks, I of course make MORE than that. That is transcribing radiology at 250 LPH.

However, for a job with that many administrative duties (Did you even bother to read the posting we are discussing here?), there is NO WAY I would shoulder that much responsibility for that kind of pay ($1400 GROSS or PRE taxes).

Putting things into perspective, I have 24 years in MT and many years in administrative/managerial positions so know exactly what remuneration to expect for a position of that nature.

Can you figure this out now?

Supervisor Position - Been There, Done That

The company that posted this ad is not a place most folks would want to work for ANY amount of money. It is an extremely frustrating place to work, and made me wish I had never said "yes" to a job for a paycheck to help my family through tough times. It is doubtful anyone who actually gets this job will be longterm - the turnover rate is amazing. I feel sorry for anyone who applies for and possibly is offered this job......it won't be pretty.

Ok, I do get it - Beentheredonethat

[ In Reply To ..]
I quit a job after 9 months that I thought was *the one,* dangling $21 an hour in front of me. It is challenging to find the right fit, that's for sure.

I was sickened to think - GL

[ In Reply To ..]
they want someone to take on that kind of responsibility and not even get (deserve) any benefits of any kind - not just no health benefits, but no PTO, no vacation, no paid holidays, no retirement?, etc., etc. Whether it is a good company or a terrible one, that is just soooooo wrong!

Does This Put Me In A Bad Position?
Jan 06, 2011

I just wrote a very long post, but decided to minimalize it because I feel very on edge with my company and I'm doing the absolute best I can. If you know the hospital that hired your company is not happy with the work that is being produced, and you are able to see glaring errors in other people's work, would you say something to management or keep it to yourself? This is MY job too, and if the errors continue I am afraid the hospital will go elsewhere, meaning my job is gone as wel ...

Are there any MMEs out there who regret having become an MME? And if you become an MME, are you able to go back to just MT status if you decide you do not like it? Does This Sound Like An IC Position To You?

Need Some Advice About A Position
Jun 08, 2010

I need some advice about a position that I am being offered.  It is an IC position.  They want Tu-Sat or Sun-Thurs and 1500 lines per day.  This is supposedly 70% VR and the rest is straight typing.  I know that techniqually they aren't supposed to require weekend work and line requirements for IC, but how is the best way to negotiate this and still get the job?  I hate the job that I am currently doing and don't make enough money at it.  I usually do work ...

Starting A New PT IC Position
Sep 01, 2012

I have a full time employee position wtih another company.  Beginning Sept 3, I will start IC for 3 days out of the week for 3-4 hours.  It pays 0.09 cpl with spaces using DocQscribe.  I figure in 3-4 hours  I will probably do 800 lines as I will probably work 3 hours.   Being that it is late in the year, do you think the extra income from Sept to December would make a huge difference in my taxes, or should I send taxes in to the IRS, and will I have to file as self ...
