How does anyone pass the 5 dictation tests? How are we suppose to break into the business if we are set up for failure? Anyone with suggestions when the doctor is talking so fast and mumbling?

Been doing this forever and never had such a hard time like in the past 6 months. It is horrible.

These are the types of reports you are going to encounter no matter where you work, not just MQ, and more often than not, that is why a lot of companies only hire MTs with experience. It takes time and practice to develop a good ear, so don't give up, you can do it.

This is also why many companies will not hire from any but the top 3 MT schools because these schools prepare their MTs for the real world by providing real dictations from real doctors with all types of accents and dictation styles.

The dictation portion of the tests you take for companies are real dictations that you will encounter every day and the tests are designed to weed out the MTs who are not prepared to handle these.

If you can get your foot in the door someplace that is understanding of the learning curve of new MTs, you can learn to do these difficult dictations, it just takes time. The dictations I thought I would never be able to do when I first started I now fly through and laugh when I remember how scared I was of them when I first started. You can do it, so don't give up!

When I first started at MedQuist, I cried almost every day. Most days, I wanted to jump out of the second floor window. It took me an hour to decipher a lot of reports...and all this after working as an MT previously. I have been at MedQuist all but 2 years now and feel much more comfortable handling pretty much anything they throw at me. I still have days when I want to scream, but they are fewer and more far between.

Keep your chin up and keep practicing. You will eventually become more confident as well.

I know from previous posts on here that that job isn't the big thing MQ was making it out to be (horrible editing pay, etc). BUT...do you guys at least have work to do, whether it is typing or editing? I am just an MT and I run out of work daily. Are there any MMEs out there who regret having become an MME? And if you become an MME, are you able to go back to just MT status if you decide you do not like it? I need some advice about a position that I am being offered. It is an IC position. They want Tu-Sat or Sun-Thurs and 1500 lines per day. This is supposedly 70% VR and the rest is straight typing. I know that techniqually they aren't supposed to require weekend work and line requirements for IC, but how is the best way to negotiate this and still get the job?
