If you're doing mainly VR editing and not straight typing, you might consider going to keyboard commands for play/stop. I thought I'd never get used to that, but it was surprisingly easy once I changed the default F3 (or whatever it is for that in my platform) to Ctrl + Space bar.
I changed the command via ZenKey, a little freebie hotkey program I use, but there might be a way to remap commands directly in your platform or even via your keyboard, if it's programmable. For straight typing, I do go back to my foot pedal, though.
