The hospital system I work for underwent a merger starting at least 4 years ago. Was not bought out and is in the Phoenix area. From what I hear, pretty much all of the hospitals in the area, except for Mayo Clinic, are in financial dire straits and pinching pennies everywhere possible.

Personally, it appears very top heavy management wise. None of the directors or VPs want to give up their jobs, and the people who do the real work -- and the patients -- suffer for it.
