they need to hire employees. So says the IRS. If you work as an IC and want to be treated as an employee, then go for it. You are being bamboozled to think that as an IC, an MTSO has the right to regulate your work schedule, including weekends, sending emails telling you to get on and work, etc. Also, do you note these companies for the most part are wanting 8-hour shifts. When does that leave you time to pick up other contracts? It's not a matter of passing on the position. It is a matter that MTSOs have no right whatsoever to require you work a shift. It's as simple as that.
