MTSOs only pay up to 8 CPL but they charge about 16 to 18 CPL. They handle hiring, firing, supervision, HR, benefits, training, scheduling, QA, creating templates, specs, maintaining web sites and many other duties they have created for themselves. We as IC's do all of the above and should earn what the MTSOs charge for the same service and turnaround.
Line rates took were cut in half several years ago when hospitals closed their transcription departments and outsourced to MTSOs. This forced us into having to work a fraction of what we had previously earned for decades.
To accept such a low line rate from a client perpetuates slave wages. There is NO reason a client should be able to pay half of what the MTSOs charge them for the same service! There is no reason that our profession should should not be paid a livable wage.
