font of knowledge vs. fount of knowledge? - LHMT

Posted: May 30, 2011

I can't quite figure out whether the dictation says font or fount.  Everything I find when I search on the internet states it could be either one.  Anyone know which is correct?  Thanks!

It is fund of knowledge, not fount or fountain of knowledge.

Fund does seem to fit well in the text. Thanks to all!
Fund of knowledge is also - SoCal MT

an acceptable and correct phrase. Because the s/l was "font" or fount," however, fount of knowledge is more likely what was dictated. Fount (fountain) of knowledge, is also a correct phrase.

"The Fountain of Knowledge" actually refers to the writings and teaching of St. John of Damascus. Often dictators refer to the "fount of knowledge" when they are probably meaning "fund of knowledge." In fact, it is so commonly used that fount of knowledge isn't really an incorrect usage at all. In Latin, fount means source.
It's fund of knowledge... - Cheri

I must have missed that it - SoCal MT

is a mental status exam. I still believe if the sounds-like is "font" or "fount," the dictator meant "fount of knowledge." I'm not arguing that fund of knowledge isn't a correct term, only that in this case it is probably not what the dictator said.

Quoting from http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Phrases-and-Sayings/Question325997.html

Google it, there are a wealth of discussions, but, in short, font, fount, or fountain are used. Even, the OED is vague.

Strictly speaking, 'fountain of all knowledge' is correct rather than 'fount' or 'font'. All three are used nowadays, but the original fountain' version was a 17th century quote and the other two are just more modern variants of that original.

The quote is from 'An Essay Concerning Human Understanding' by the philosopher, John Locke, published in 1690. Clearly, in it he was referring to God.

"Reason is natural revelation, whereby the eternal father of light, and fountain of all knowledge, communicates to mankind that portion of truth which he has laid within the reach of their natural facilities."

In a 14th century book, God was referred to as "the fountain of all goodness" and in the 16th century Book of Common Prayer there is a reference to "Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom".

However, Locke's quote - given above - is the earliest instance of the concept of knowledge having a fountain' as its source.

Fund of knowledge indicating an appropriate level of - knowledge or understanding. nm

Font or fount of knowledge is where one would go to GET knowledge.

Fund of knowledge is how much knowledge one already has.

It doesn't matter what it "sounds like" the doctor dictated.  Even if he clearly says "font" or "fount," he is incorrect and you should use "fund."
