This may get moved, but "word" question - ancient MT

Posted: May 05, 2010

I recently started working for a small national and getting "dinged" on QA with stating "CO2 25."  Their QA is stating that it should be "CO2 "of" 25 and that any value followed by a number should have "of" included.  I have 30 years experience, have typed, CO2 25, pCO2 8, et cetera and NEVER been dinged for this  -- to me, it's redundant, but I guess according to BOS.

Any feedback?

Thanks

Do this. No do that. No, no, go back to doing it like you did before...

Man, I'm gonna say a dreaded word here and that is "retarded." That's what it all is to me. I guess just grit your teeth and do what your new company wants and do the whole, "I'm sorry ma'am/sir. It won't happen again. Thank you ma'amsir can I have another."

BOS 2nd edition does NOT use the word "of" between CO2 and 25, or any other lab value for that matter. It doesn't specifically say to do so, nor does it specifically say not to do so, but the examples that they give on page 231 are shown without the word "of."

Yes it does, see BOS2 page 277 - do not use adjacent numbers

[ In Reply To ..]
BOS2, page 277, here's what it says:

Adjacent numbers:
When two numbers are consecutive, spell out one of them to avoid confusion.

Example: The patient was instructed to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of GoLYTELY before bedtime.

Example: Discharge Medication: Os-Cal 500 one daily.

Example: two 8-inch drains

Use a comma to separate adjacent numerals if neither can be readily expressed in words and the sentence cannot be reworded.

-----

Thus, since the two numbers in "CO2 25" cannot be separated by a comma, or readily expressed in words, or the sentence reworded, it would be:

"CO2 is 25" or "CO2 of 25"

and

"pCO2 is 8" or "pCO2 of 8"

CO2 and pCO2 aren't numbers; they are terms which contain numbers - SM

While you have the BOS 2 correct up to that point, your instruction to add "is" or "of" (or whatever) is your interpretation and not in the BOS under that subject. Just wanted to make that clear. I, for one, would not add the "is" or "of" in such an instance.

CORRECT interpretation, pCO2 ?, et cetra the darned or should I say otherwise DOCS run lab values together -- it is REDUNDANT when it " has to be "BUN of," creatinine of, arterial blood gas of." typing "of and" AD NAUSEUM is ridiculous - my current supervisor is of the opinion (like I am) if it does NOT compromise patient care let it go. Example are docs in a large teaching hospital, but they DONT care -- I get "dinged with QA" because Dr. Muhammed Mublemouth or even John Doe does not want to speak properly

VA accounts -- been there done that on both sides of the fence -- my late husband served 3 tours of duty for his county -- he became sick, took him in house where I worked -- three weeks later (after 2 ER visits) "terminal CA of the larynx."

With his VA experience, it was "doc of the day" none of them knew what was going on and when I got his death certificate, it read "CA of the hypop harnx" -- This was the coroners office "we will white it out and corect" NOT.

We oldsters have to be "raked through the fire;" heaven forbid a newbie."
With all due respect, I think you may have - misunderstood

The MT was talking about getting dinged by QA for typing "CO2 25" and "pCO2 8", i.e. lab values that include numbers.

BUN 10, creatinine 0.1 is perfectly fine, no "of" required between the lab test and the dictated value.

However, CO2 and pCO2 have numbers and when dictated with their values, this creates a situation where there are two adjacent numbers (CO2 25).

The MT wanted to know why she was getting dinged by QA for not typing this as "CO2 of 25" or "CO2 is 25", and the reason behind QA dinging her is because of what the BOS2 says to do.

Now whether I agree with the BOS2 or not, if my company requires me to follow the BOS2, that's what I have to do or QA is going to ding me for it.

That's numbers, not lab values - Happy MT Robin

Two completely different things.

Page 231 that I initially referenced specifically talks about lab values.
Sorry I was just trying to help the MT understand why she is - getting dinged by QA
[ In Reply To ..]
The BOS2 section about lab values that you reference on page 231 does not include anything about lab values which include numbers (CO2, pCO2). That section only talks about WBC, hemoglobin, sodium, potassium, etc.

It is the section on page 277 that addresses the "adjacent numbers" issue.

You can argue about this all you want. But I was just trying to help this MT understand why QA is dinging her for "CO2 25" and "pCO2 8." And if your company follows the BOS2, they will ding you for this every time.

Well, so much for the BOS - what's for lunch? - mt3

another fine mess, AHDI. Can't wait for BOS4

CO2 - PAT46

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to type all labs like this:
Electrolytes: Sodium: 137. Potassium: 140. CO2: 10, etc and was told by the last company I worked for to delete the : So it would be CO2 10. Guess you have to go with what the company you work for says.

I agree that "of" should be inserted since - "of"

[ In Reply To ..]
CO2 10 might be misread for CO210.

Since the rule that the second of 2 consecutive numbers should be spelled out does not apply in this case, "of" has to be inserted.

Let's throw the BOS on the BBQ - and toast marshmallows over its flames

BOS: A bunch of ever-changing rules made up by a bunch of self-proclaimed experts for the sole purpose of profiting from people (companies)who can't think for themselves.

I will use my common sense and the real rules I learned in school, tyvm.

BOS next editions - IMHO

[ In Reply To ..]
BOS makes, at best, a lousy door stop. Just who are the "powers that be" at AHDI who decide these non-consistent rules? Anyone ever stop to think if they didn't keep changing things no one would ever need to buy another BOS? Just more $$$ out of the pockets of the American MT's. All MT's hear is the BIG FLUSH while AHDI hears CHA-CHING.

I have been reading the posts of many of the unhappy MTs on this board for some time now. Seems like for those of you are happy in your present situation, so many others are just about at their "wits" in theirs.
