VR programs - Information please

Posted: Oct 08, 2012

I would appreciate some feedback on VR programs.  Are you currently working on one you you would recommend?  If so, which one and why?  Also, are you working on one you would not recommend.  If so, which one and why?  I would greatly appreciate this information, as we are just beginning to explore the possibility of going to a VR program and this information would be of great value to us in choosing a program that is transcriptionist friendly.

vr - why

[ In Reply To ..]
why are you going to a VR program. There is no such thing as an MT friendly program. They are all time consuming, money-losing platforms and will not be any benefit to anyone except for the ones in charge. If you are thinking of your MTs and care at all, PLEASE DON'T DO IT. Save them from the pain of it all, most of the rest of us are either leaving, or going broke because of VR.

Or at least do not cut their pay. It has been - proven that VR does not SM

double production. Research this if you don't believe me (do not believe the companies who own the VR software, they lie). Read this board and find out that most of us are severely struggling to meet our responsibilities because our pay has been cut in half. How would you be able to live if your pay was cut in half and you still had the same bills to pay? If you decide to go with VR and still pay the MTs a liveable wage, then step up and name your company, you will develop a great reputation in our community, and maybe other companies will follow you (doubtful but hope never dies).

Thank you for your reply. I completely understand your position. Please see my 2nd post in this thread. As stated, I am not a company owner or supervisor, I'm a transcriptionist. I DO NOT support VR, as I have worked on platforms in the past, but if my employer decides to move in that direction (though we are trying to encourage them not to!), I at least want to have knowlege of what's out there in hopes of giving some positive feedback and hopefully contribute to picking one of the best available - if there is such a thing!

Believe me,having worked on VR programs, I know that they do not double production, and though the words on the page may actually be at 98% accuracy after the dictator has been on the program for a while, many words are missing and a great deal of time is spent on editing grammar/punctuation. However, I have done research on the Internet and so far all I've come up with is reports from vendors who continue to state how cost effective the programs are. Could you possibly lead me in another direction where I might find substantial evidence to the contrary that I could present to my employer? Perhaps there is actually another way we can be more cost effective that will be fair to the transcriptionists without having to go to VR. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Same line count - me
[ In Reply To ..]
My line count has basically stayed the same as it was with straight typing now doing a combination of VR and transcription, but more VR than anything. It is very time consuming to have to correct every other word in a lot of cases and putting in a LOT of punctuation. Paying half for VR is ridiculous.

Believe me, it's definitely not my choice to move to a VR program. I'm a transcriptionist, not a supervisor, and have worked on VR programs in the past for nationals I've worked for, so I know how bad they can be! However, my full-time employer is contemplating the move and is actually considering the input of current employees, so since I have no final choice in the decision to go to VR, I at least want to explore the best platforms so hopefully can be working with the least of all the evils out there. Therefore, I would really appreciate input from those currently working on VR programs.

MModal's DocQscribe and Nuance's Express Editor, and both have potential. (Caution with these 2, though, as they charge the client extra for VR licenses for each dictator and then also charge monthly fees for tech support, all on top of the huge chunk of change just for the software.)

VR's success depends wholly on how it's trained in the very beginning. Consistency is the key. The MTs and QA/QC need to be trained to edit the same things the same way.

For example, if VR leaves off the word "the" at the beginning of a sentence, and the MT doesn't add the word "the" to the beginning of that sentence, even though the dictator dictated the word "the" at the beginning of that sentence, QA is NOT to come in and add the word "the" and then count it as an MT error.

On the other hand, if you want the word "the" at the beginning of the sentence when dictated, and VR leaves it out and you want the MT to add it, that's okay, but make sure ** ALL MTs ** are doing it this way, so VR will learn to add the word "the" to the beginning of the sentence. Otherwise, you'll have some MTs putting it in there as directed, and some not, and VR will never learn what's right and what's wrong, so it'll just keep making the same mistakes over and over again, which have to be fixed over and over again by the MTs.

Having to constantly fix stuff like this really slows down the MTs. The fewer edits the MT has to make, the more productive the MT is.

Of course, none of this matters when a dictator can't complete a sentence to save the world, or keeps changing his/her mind, or stumbles, mumbles, slurs, etc. VR can only type what it hears, and when the dictation is bad, VR will happily do so, but it'll be wrong. I've found that when the VR is this bad, it's faster just to type it than to stop several times each sentence to make a correction or addition.

I don't know if I answered your question, but maybe there's something helpful in here.

Thank you for your feedback on the cons of the VR, suggestions for implementation, and naming the 2 platforms you have used. I will make a note of them for discussions with my supervisor. I have never worked on Escription but have read on this website that some others really like that program. I'm hoping to get some feedback from Escription users and various other programs so I have a great deal of information to offer when some future decisions are made. As I said, as a transcriptionist I am DEFINITELY NOT a supporter of VR, find that many times I could transcribe the report much faster by straight transcription or using a template/normal I have created. However, though we rarely if ever have a choice in the final decision our employer may make, if given the chance to help participate in the decision-making, I want to come to the table with as much information as possible, as the final choice has an affect on my co-workers, as well as myself.

I didn't realize you were an MT... - sm

Your post sounded like you were a client about to transition your MTs to VR.

Escription and Enterprise Express Editor are different platforms.

I'm sorry for the confusion in the original post, but I am an MT. Have you used either Escription or Enterprise Express Editor and able to provide feedback? I do know they are separate programs, as I have used the Enterprise Express program for a national company I worked for in the past, but I have not used Escription.
escription - use it
[ In Reply To ..]
I have only worked on escription and understand it is one of the best ones and easiest to use; however that does not mean it is MT friendly. When we first started using it, I was able to do about 450 lph but now down to 200-250. It all depends on how the other MTs are doing the corrections and what the platform "learns."

It does not get numbers right, and when the discharge diagnoses are "same" it comes up with some bizzare words, definitely not "same" which would be nice (obviously it would not transcribe what the admit dx were, but it could at least type "same." Of cours, it also depends on if the dictators are ESL and what the VR thinks they are saying.

I left my last 2 jobs because of VR and the platform was escription, and I am about to be asked to come off my escription account where I live now, not willing to put up with the massive corrections that need to be made even with the best of the best platforms.

Good luck.

Thank you very much for your feedback! I too have noticed with the 2 programs I've used that the system learns and then "relearns" incorrectly depending on different transcriptionists, which is very frustrating! For examplem the company specifications may be to not expand such words as COPD if dictated as such in the body of the text, so that's how you do it. After a certain number of times the system learns that and leaves the abbreviation as requested. However, new transcriptionists come onto the account, don't follow the specifications, and now the system is expanding what has been dictated as an abbreviation, and you are back to square one. I know one of the programs I worked on took 11 times before it would be learned or relearned incorrectly - so you go back and forth, wasting time editing.

I'm sorry to hear that you are still having a problem with what is considered the "best of the best platforms." I wish you well.

Who Programs The ASR?
Nov 16, 2009

Okay, I want to know who programs the ASR.  I'm told that we do, but anytime I make a ligit change, it doesn't stick.  Yet, all of a sudden, on an account I have been typing on for 3 years, ASR starts changing the word stroke to a backslash (/) and this is for every instance.  If this is something our lovely ILPs are doing, I don't think they are going to last long.  If this is something our new USMTs are doing, it's no wonder our work is being shippe ...

Cumbersome EMR And VR Programs
Feb 24, 2010

I just spoke with an MT at a large radiology group who says they use different softwares for different studies. So they have probably 5 different programs to try to merge into one cohesive patient record. So if they have an MRI and a mammogram (two different software programs), she spends her day putting them together. Not only that, but before they implemented these cumbersome programs, they had 2 IT people to run the IT show. Now they have 7 all of these different engines running. They got rid ...

Software Programs
Jul 25, 2011

I've worked for 3 different MTSOs. each bought out by another. I was never aware of the type of software programs used by these companies as the work platforms were "proprietary." I'm currently looking for part-time work and notice that most all job applications are asking for the name of or type of software programs used. How do I find out this information? As an example, Webmedx used Enterprise, but I have no idea what software program was used to create this platform. How do I ...

How Do They Sell These VR Programs??
Dec 18, 2013

I'm assuming the software vendors talk the clients into how much they'll save by paying editors to fix this crap.  There is no way someone would buy into this software if they knew what it really looked like in draft form...omg.  It would not surprise me if the software vendor slipped a few Benjamins under the table to a willing doc at the facility and had him "train" the software before the presentation to the client.  The doc goes in, reads from a script, and near perf ...

Running Windows Programs On A MAC
