doctor who uses tapes - Lisa

Posted: Jan 30, 2012

I have a doctor that still uses tapes and refuses to go digital or call-in.  The problem is there is interference on the tapes and I can barely hear him.  They think it is my transcriber, which it could be, but I don't think it would be worth the investment to buy a new transcriber for tapes when hardly any doctors even use them anymore!  I need some opinions from my fellow MTs on this subject!  I risk losing the entire account of 3 doctors (2 are digital) if I don't do this one doctors tapes anymore.

How about purchasing a used transcriber. Check the classifieds here or eBay. It would be a shame to lose a 3-doctor account. (I found an almost new transcriber on ebay for 20 bucks a few years back). Just a thought.

You might want to check on how often they replace tapes. I transcribed for a guy whose office religiously changed batteries for fresh ones, but when I just couldn't hear anymore and investigated, they had been erasing and reusing the same set of tapes for 2 years. Good luck :)

All we use are tapes and we change them every two months, literally throw them out and replace.

I thought it might be the recorder and one of the docs said, "Oh wait" and comes back with a Q-tip filled with dust. He said, "It's like the mouse, gotta clean out the dust bunnies once in a while". So if you have access to the recorder or a go-to person whom you can ask, it would require cleaning the mechanism where the tape presses onto the wheel, just like a mouse. (actually had this happen no more than 15 minutes ago!)

I agree with the above - cindy

you have to clean his machine and your machine at least once a month and also make sure they are replacing the tapes every so often and batteries. The place I used to work at used tapes and I had been promoted to supervisor there and I made sure that the tapes were thrown out and replaced every month or so. They were also erasing and reusing tapes and the tape actually stretches out after a while and would break, but you want to make sure they are replacing them before that because you then end up with poor quality.

At least you know that the doctor is going to want to dictate for a long time and not use a point and click EMR if he is not willing to go digital. Could mean some job security, so I would try to work it out. Good luck to you.

Help...Account Wants To Switch From Tapes To ?
Sep 09, 2010

I have always transcribed either from a C-phone, tapes, or worked for a national that had their own dictation platform. My local account wants to switch from tapes to something similar to Emdat and wants my advice. He has very little dictation and just needs something that he can dictate from any phone, where I can access it from home. Obviously, I'm not up to speed on new technology so any friendly advice would be helpful. Thank you! ...

Tapes To Wave Files

I'm trying to find equipment/info that will convert microcassettes and mini cassettes to voice files.  I found a company called Martel Electronics and they have exactly what I'm looking for but when you click on it to buy the equipment it skips over and goes to like a home page.   I need something that will duplicate the tapes in speed recording time and not minute for minute or it will take me forever to convert.   Any help would be appreciated.  TIA ...

Doc Wary Of Going From Tapes To Wave Files..sm
May 04, 2010

I am moving and want to keep the local doctor I type for by utilizing my WAV pedal and software.  However, when I approached the doctor about this, she was wary of having me be hundreds of miles away and typing for her.  She doesn't mind the format because she had a previous transcriptionist use it, but she was "local."  Does anyone have any suggestions or comments to help me out with this?  Thanks in advance.  Anything would be appreciated. ...

Overheard A Doctor Telling Another Doctor...
Oct 15, 2010

20 years ago when the DRG's hit the hospitals, one  was complaing to the other... "they treat doctors like a bunch of old dogs now".  Well, that's how  MTs are being treated now.  Why on God's green earth do the MT services require all MT's to work at least one weekend day every week (Friday's and Monday's  don't count). Every ad I see on the Job Seeker board requires weekends.  Are they sadistic or something.  Why do we put u ...

Do You Ever Wonder How A Doctor (ESL Or Non-ESL) Would
Feb 20, 2010

react if we went in their offices and talked so fast that they couldn't understand what we said, if we ate during our visit, or yawned and continued talking?  I'm just going to wager a guess that they wouldn't appreciate it very much.  Sometimes, I think it would be fun to try just to see their reactions.  There are some that I transcribe that if I ever got the chance to do that I would.  Have an ESL right now that's talking way too fast.  Do they not ...

Rambles on, makes no sense throughout the dictation at all, does not make complete sentences, dictates on a patient in the WRONG chart constantly, follows no format, which is required by YOU, cuts himself off but yet when you can understand him, he has a "bright" moment and makes sense is an absolute joy to transcribe????  Oh, and did I mention that he only dictates every third day even though he sees patients on a daily basis???? What About A Doctor's Responsibility?
Oct 20, 2009

I got in trouble today because I put a wrong patient.  The doctor dictated a billing number, name, and MRN.  The MRN was had a different patient, but the billing number and the patient name matched the ADT screen.  Not to mention the fact that he kept using "she" in the dictation and the MRN number matched a "he".  So logically one would just think he had the wrong MRN and I didn't want another QA submission so I sent it through with the correct billing number, name, and ...

I am a former Spheris MT, now begrudgingly a MQ MT (not that Spheris was all that great either).  As was pointed out below, we are still on Spheris rules for the most part but I don't expect that to last forever.  At Spheris, if we think a doctor has made a mistake, we are encouraged to flag it but that entails putting in a blank, just as if we didn't understand the dictator.  If we have too many blanks in a given period, we lose our incentive pay.  They do not diff ...
