Focus - why no satellite internet for EditScript? - cynical

Posted: Dec 04, 2009

I work on EditScript via satellite internet for another company.  Focus will not hire to work on EditScript if you have satellite, saying it is not compatible.  Anyone working for them with satellite?  I don't understand this, since the platform should be the same no matter which transcription company you access it through.

These are my thoughts on this issue - Not satellite

It would seem to me that by using satellite might make it easy for others to intercept the work out there. I had satellite television in the past and I would like to know, does your satellite do like mine did, if the sky got cloudy, overcast, rainy, etc. my programs were just not there, static, horrible. I got rid of that ASAP. I really did not like. Has satellite improved any?

I don't think that's it. - MTDays

Satellite works with encrypting the signal and if interception was a problem, wireless routers would also be verboten. I think it often really is a compatibility issue and how the company has things set up. For whatever reason, my satellite works with some VPNs but does not work with others and also how you work with the files. I now work with a company that said that they did not believe their system was compatible with satellite, but we gave it a try and it works fine; maybe a little slower than true high speed and with a couple of idiosyncrasies, but nothing that impacts the job.

I agree with the last poster that many companies work with VPNs, and I know my satellite internet connection does not support that. I do not understand why, exactly, it may be on their end or mine, not sure. I thought when I was forced to get satellite that it was due to weather causing disruption, but honestly, my cable was disrupted way more than my satellite is.

Now, I do not know this for a fact, it is just a guess, but the highest speed satellite is a little pricey. In our area, I pay about $80 per month. Many might not be willing nor able to do this and their connection might be a lot slower and, because of more steps required in transmitting signals, maybe work is slowed down or lost more frequently? Again, just a thought. One company I worked for said they tried satellite for awhile and it worked with a few employees and did not with some others. They eventually discontined accepting it.

Tried it and had unreliable connections, timed-out reports, etc - RubySoho

I don't work for Focus but did use satellite when I first began working for my current MTSO on Escription. Using satellite was a nightmare, what with dropped connections mid report, attempting to download/upload jobs with timing out and losing the job, etc. At times it would take me up to 5 minutes to upload an edited job, with my fingers crossed the entire time that the report wouldn't be lost.

My productivity took a huge nosedive trying to use satellite with Escription and after seeing the evidence on my paycheck, I quickly switched to cable.

Maybe your satellite is different than mine (Wild Blue), but it most definitely was a major issue for me trying to use Escription with it.

Anyone Work On Editscript And Have Satellite Internet?

I previously worked at Nuance on Editscript platform.  I moved and had to get satelllite internet, and Nuance wasn't compatible anymore.  So I am working at Transcend, who said the BeyondTXT platform is satellite compatible.  I do not care much for BeyondTXT though.  My line counts are much lower than what they were with Editscript.  BeyondTXT said their accounts with Editscript aren't compatible with satellite.  Is there anyone who works on an Editscript ...
