MQ employee who has dial up and needs to know if any other MQ MTs are using satellite? - ververyoldMQMT

Posted: Sep 10, 2010

Even though I was told by my CCM she has sympathy for my plight I am required to download 6.1.  Okay, I had to take my puter to parents to get the tutorial.  I don't have a problem taking the CPU over there to get the 6.1 upgrade (downgrade if I see correctly by others).   I have dial up and cannot get DSL.   I have been with this company for 17 years.  I am not an overt cheerleader, but I need my job and cannot go outside my home.   Someone mentioned to me down below that satellite broadband could be an option.   Today I got a promo from my Direct TV tech rep about a WildBlue satellite that IS available here where I live.  Are any other MQ MTers using satellite, and if so could you let me know what company you use?  I am so needing help here.  Do you think EAP would help me.  I truly have stressed myself to tears and nightmares.   I just want to do my job.   I think the number listing and the skip marks are a good thing.

Another question, from the tutorial I see that the instructor (yeah right) did not change the attending in the ADT, she just kept the dictator.  I have ALWAYS done Alt S to do a search every time.  I pull up the latest and change the attending to that of the dictator if I KNOW that it is not a resident or PA.   Has this changed?   There are so many glaring errors in this that have not been addressed properly.   I am not going to use that Ctrl H feature for heading insertions.   I have always had expansions to headings, and my account is verbatim, so most of the time that is the best way any who....(and yes, I spelled that wrong on purpose).

The biggest question and prayer is, am I going to be able to use satellite (WildBlue is the only one so far in my area) with MQ?

I've used satellite for years as we live way out in the country. We had WildBlue for a few years, but recently switched to HughesNet. Actually, the WildBlue is better, except I had a wonky modem and the Net would go out if you even looked at it wrong, but, in retrospect, that was just a hardware issue. HughesNet is very strict on their daily download allowance, and I ended up exceeding the daily allowance watching those 6.1 tutorials. Thankfully, they allow you 1 "token" per month if you exceed your allowance and will reset your system, otherwise you are just out of luck and can't use the Net for 24 hours (unless you buy another token for $5). We never had any problems with WildBlue and were even able to watch NetFlix on my husband's laptop with them. Can't do that with HughesNet. Hope that helps.

As to your other question, it probably depends on the account. On my account, we really don't use the attending field unless it is clearly dictated, as most of the time the dictator is not the attending. Plus, my account isn't set up with all of that different heading stuff....it's just the same as it always was. Basically the only things that are different now (besides being a bit slower) is the auto-number feature and the different ways to do the skip marker. Maybe your account will be the same way...not too many of those new changes.

I hope things work out for you!! =)

Satellite - last resort

I had satellite for about a year. It wasn't WildBlue, but HughesNet. Boy was that awful. I almost preferred dialup over that. Anytime it would just get a little windy or too cloudy the internet would go down. Restricted on how much I can download. The upload speed was the same as dialup. Rude, overseas customer support, etc. All for $70 a month. I ended up bringing my PC to my parents' and working there as they had DSL. However, I lived a few miles out of DSL service area, yet I called nearly every day to get them to at least try it and I would pay the service fee. Well, after about a month or two of nagging, they came out, and what do you know, it worked even better than my parents'. In any case, if you are just outside service area, try nagging. If not, might as well try satellite. Hopefully WildBlue is better than HughesNet.

Oh my heavens, that is EXACTLY my situation. 1/4 mile from our wedge of community on both sides all have DSL AT&T. I also have been going to parent's home to download the tutorial, and now must do the same to get the new 6.1. But, i am part time, 18 years with company and have accepted all the pay cuts. It will cost me $99.95 up front to get the satellite. That means I still have to pay this month for the additional dedicated telephone line of $40 then going down after 3 months to $24, the main home line of $59 and the dial up of $24.... Let's not even go there with all the other basic utility bills and medical bills I have. I have heard bad comments on both satellite providers.
As I have said before, no understanding at all from MQ upper echelons. I just need and want to do my job.

Pray for me, please. I am totally fried mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Connection - Air Card

[ In Reply To ..]
You can get air cards (3G network) from the cell phone companies for $49/mo. Same price as cable and they are just as fast from what I hear. If you already have a data plan, it will be less. They give 5G and it seems that this would be plenty for our work (correct me if I am wrong here). Just plug it in to USB on your laptop or desktop and you are good to go.

Bad experience with WildBlue satellite - Non-MQ MT

Live out in country. Used dial up until I couldn't use it anymore. Went with WildBlue through DirecTV. Actually DirecTV subcontracts their WildBlue out. Thus, if you need a service call, like someone to come to your house, you put in a service call. That service call is not even processed until 24 hours after you place it. It takes 24 hours to go from DirecTv and then they will notify WildBlue. Then someone will call you and schedule an appointment which is never the next day, it was always in like 4 or 5 days. You could be out of work for a week before the tech even arrives. Plus, they were going to charge me an additional $90 each time a tech had to come out. I about lost my job because of WildBlue.

I ended up taking my big huge PC over to my in-laws house to work.

After all that, Verizon starting coming out with their USB modems. I called them one day, found that there was a tower nearby, and have been very, very happy.

I'd rather drag my PC to inlaws house before I ever go with any satellite, whoever the company is.

Good luck to ya. Let us know how is goes for you.

HughesNet - anon

I can totally sympathize w/ you. I was in the exact same boat about a yr ago. I had to drag mine to my aunt's to get upgrade but then was unable to actually work on my dial-up after I did the update. She has DSL. I live 15 mins from her (if that) and had nothing but dial-up or sat. Went w/ Hughesnet & I haven't had much of a prob. The wireless router they installed sucked as did their cust svc when I cl'd about that, but my only other complaint is the price. I'm a former Spheris emp & we have to run a VPN, so I had to go w/ a higher priced version.

The tech guys had told me about the cards, too, but I have zero cell svc at my house, so no go.

Wishing you the best of luck. It is an absolute nightmare.

I couldn't have the dish attached to my roof (I'm surrounded by trees), so it had to go in the yard. Installer drove through my yard to get to the spot (I told him it was okay because it had been dry for a few days) but asked that he not tear up the yard getting out. He did that, broke a tie alongside the walkway to our house, and left all of the trash outside. That said, they're apparently only allowed to dig so many feet to get to your house, and he went over that in 90-degree heat to hook me up & showed me how to use the optional wireless router.

Can No Longer Download Jobs Via Dial-up Connection
Jul 28, 2010

I have been working successfully for Softscript for the past 5 years via a dial-up internet connection.  Recently, I have been having trouble downloading jobs; i.e., I can't do it.  The tech person I have been working with there says that my computer is fine - it is just that dial-up is outdated - "no one expects anyone to have a dial-up connection any more". I don't understand how it can be working one day and not the next.  Anybody have any ideas, fixes, etc.  I ...
