Can a company tell if you use satellite for internet? - Wondering

Posted: Jul 17, 2012

As well as your computer requirements?  My desktop does not meet the requirements, though pretty sure my laptop does, BUT I use satellite which on the hiring forms they sent me they said won't work....however I know for a fact that it will work with the platform I will be on with their company  (have done it with another company, no problems though the tech people had no clue and were shocked to hear it...but it works fine).  They will not be installing anything on my computer either from their end so what does it matter?

Figure I will fill out the forms like I am using my laptop (and DSL) and if I have to will just use it for work, though again know my desktop will work just fine with their platform on that computer.

I don't see how the form of internet connection matters, as long as it is high-speed as they require and you use a virus scanner (daily).   Any thoughts?

Do you have to connect through VPN?

Nope, no VPN. - Wondering

I have heard satellite won't work with VPN...it will work with dial-up though (I have done that, though obviously quite slow).

Does VPN work with air cards? Just curious. I cannot get cable or DSL where I am unfortunately so a bit limited on how I connect.

I don't expect to have to use VPN at all, working on an account/platform that connects and logs in via the internet connection be it dial-up, aircard, cable, DSL or satellite, works with them all.

There is no such thing any more. I have a "newer" laptop (purchased last year) -- no air card slot. In that case, you would have to use your cell phone to connect. Which can be done with either a desktop or laptop, with a USB adapter for the desktop. It does work, because that is what my S/O uses. However, he uses it to "surf," and if a cell phone is your only option for communication, and you receive a call, you WILL lose your connection.

card for the card slot, but is called an aircard (printed right on it as part of its name), sorry for any confusion. I can use it on any computer, desktop or laptop, just need the USB port to connect.

The one time I tried to use an air card and log on to the VPN, it would not work and I returned the air card. I worked by satellite from Mexico for awhile. That's the joy of being location independent.

I use a USB modem and MiFi wireless device from Verizon and they both work with VPN.

Yes they can - ancient MT

The company can have you do a "speed test." www.speedtest.com. They can ask you to run Belarc Advisor which will specifically tell EVERYTHING about your computer, and also, if they have to "remote in" to install software, they would be able to tell then as well, because with a remote connection, it can be VERY slow.

No, they won't be installing anything on my - sm - Wondering

computer. I have all that is needed already, and they know that. I am not an employee so don't plan on letting them have access to my computer anyway.

You can be an IC or SE and if they have tech support to install the software, etc., then they can remote in and install it. Please take your head out of the sand.
Satellite - duh
[ In Reply To ..]
The poster already said she has what she needs on her computer. No-one can "remote in" without your permission. That is called HACKING and is illegal. I have never had ANY company do an internet speed test. There are MANY misconceptions about satellite internet because most people are stuck back in the late 90s when it comes down to satellite's use and issues. This is how many tech support staff at these companies are too.
As so eloquently answered by "duh", they won't - sm - Wondering

be installing anything on my computer. I certainly won't be granting them access and I know they would need me to install software to allow that, which I would not do. I have it already (which was downloaded via the internet not from MTSO site or anything like that) and it is not something they install anyway, it comes straight from the client actually and I log directly into their EMR system, has nothing whatsoever to do with the MTSO in reality (except they are the main contractor obviously and they give me a log in I.D. issued from the hospital). The tech people are not with/employed by the MTSO either, so not worried there either. They were surprised years ago to hear it worked with both aircard and satellite as they were under the mistaken belief it did not, but works just fine and dandy. Now they know better.

So I guess in this particular case I do not need to worry about it as I already know my computer and connection will work. However if they ever want me to switch over to any of their other accounts with VPN or whatever then that will not be possible due to the satellite, and presume an "aircard" would not work on the same principle.

Every server keeps a log of the unique IP address of - computers that access the server. sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Every computer on the Internet has a unique IP address. If this were not the case, a client computer could not connect with a server, and the server would not be able to send a response.

The servers keep logs of all connections, and their IP addresses. The ownership of an IP address (which would normally be the Internet Service Provider, whether satellite, cable, DSL or dial-up) is a matter of public record and there are lots of lookup sites online. These are called "WhoIs" databases.

So, if I had your IP address, I could easily determine who had issued you that IP address and thus I would know whether your ISP was a satellite company or not.

I hope this answers your question.

Probably depends on the company - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Nuance checks based on your IP address, they don't need to get inside your computer. They also did remotely check my computer to see if I had the system requirements before I was offered a job(obviously with my knowledge). I had to increase my memory and update my Word program before they would hire me and she did check.

If it is a smaller company, you may be able to slip it by them but Nuance apparently runs a daily check to see what our connections are. They addressed this at a monthly meeting, as people were asking if they could use hotel internet or if they left the country on vacation and they were told no for outside the country and a hotel internet connection had to be some special kind of line. She indicated they could tell and if you used an unauthorized source you would be fired.

Aren't connection requirments based on HIPAA? - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Pretty sure companies don't have these requirements to be jerks. I think different sources of connecting are more secure than others and some do not comply with HIPAA.

thinkaboutit - not hardly

[ In Reply To ..]
If this were the case with HIPAA, how would ANY companies allow satellite. It is in the pings and lag times, it is why satellite does not work with VPN.

Sorry, that is what I have been told, not a computer expert. - anon

This board seems to be used for the sole purpose of making some people feel superior.

I personally don't care what connection you use. However, I would hesitate about LYING to the company I am working for because there are ways they can find out. My bad for leaning towards honesty, I realize it is an outdated trait.

So whatever, I could honestly not care less.
Anon - not hardly

I apologize for being snarky. This board definitely doesn't need my contribution. I agree with you, though, I wouldn't hide/lie about my connection even if I could because...well...it's just wrong, for me anyway. Definitely a bad foot to begin on.
