Does anyone out there use a balance ball chair - or just a balance ball instead of an office chair?

Posted: Mar 24, 2011

I'm trying to use just my balance ball right now.  I have some low back problems and find that my posture is horrendous with sitting in a normal office chair; however, just the balance ball alone seems to be a little too low.  Overall, it feels more comfortable on my rear end than my normal office chair and I'm definitely sitting up straighter, but wondered if anyone else out there had any experiences, good or bad, with using a balance ball or the balance ball chair setup.  This is the first day I've tried it for work, so I'm not sure how I'm going to feel by the end of today, but I can feel myself tucking in my abdominals without even focusing on doing that.

This is what my chiropractor recommended (sm) - Yochana

This is what my chiropractor gave me when I was having back problems to strengthen my back and core muscles. He said you are actually exercising your muscles while you sit because every little move you make causes the cushion to move thus your muscles have to readjust themselves to stay balanced. He warned me to start out the first week at 15 minutes a day and gradually work up to longer periods of time or I'd be sorry. I forgot one day and sat on it 45 minutes and was I sorry.....had terrible back muscle spasms. But, it really, really, worked. In about 5-6 months I had perfect posture without even thinking about it. Beforehand, I had really bad, sloppy posture. I tried using my ball for a chair and while it was the proper height it was too hard to use a foot pedal and keep myself balanced. This cushion is supposed to mimic the ball chair, but I think the ball chair is a little softer than the cushion, but I did really like it.

Thank you! - sorebehind

I was only able to sit on the balance ball and work for about an hour or so yesterday. It was killing my hips trying to work the foot pedal and sat just a tad lower than my office chair, so probably not the best position for my wrists either. Thanks for the link. I checked it out this morning and am going to seriously consider it.

Your welcome :-) - Yochana

Apparently in addition to transcribing, acute listening, and translating . . . now I'm supposed to have ESP skills to know what they MEANT to say even if it is strictly "verbatim," there is a gray area we are to instinctively know called, "Transcription clairvoyance, what the dictator meant to say." Chair Suggestions?

Does anyone have some suggestions for a good quality office chair, an ergonomic model in particular which focuses on support for the lower back?
