I've been actively working with 5 recruiters - sm

Posted: Feb 14, 2013

For awhile now and have applied for tons of jobs outside the MT industry.  I haven't had a lot of luck until all of a sudden it's like an explosion of jobs just this week.

I started tutoring elementary school kids in reading at 25.00 to 30.00 an hour.  I got my first student in 9 days for 3 days a week, and now I'm start several more - so working 10 hours per week and making 250-300.

Sunday and Monday, I did a 2-day temp job at 11.50 an hour.

Then, I got a call yesterday from a recruiter I've been working with who has submitted me for 5 jobs with large companies.  The lowest paying job is a secretary type job that starts at 20.00 an hour, and the other 4 jobs are higher paying than that.  I'm told I've made the short list already for 3 of those.

Today, I got a call from a different recruiter I've been working with, and he has 2 jobs.  One of them pays 20.00 an hour, and the other pays 30.00 an hour, and I have an interview tomorrow for the 30.00 an hour one and am told I'm their best candidate so far.

I've been looking for 7 months and have submitted hundreds of resumes with pretty much nothing, and now all this.

Persistence pays off.  Right now, I'm doing M*Modal at night and tutoring an hour here and there, and things are getting better.  The absolute worst case scenario at this point is that I'll be tutoring for 25.00-30.00 an hour a few hours a week and getting a few jobs from M*Modal.

A year from now is going to pass anyway, but if you send out 1 resume per day that's 365 chances for a new job that pays a living wage.  If you really want to make more money you can.

you must have a lot of other skills then - sm

I usually don't even get an interview and when I do I never get the job. Where do you find these recruiters?

I'm wondering, are any of these jobs through the kind of employment agency where the recruiter gets a commission if you are hired? Do any of these recruiters work for the unemployment office in your area? How did you find them? How did you find that tutoring job? Is it online or in-person?

Do you have a college degree? If you do, then I - SM

can see where this helps you, especially with tutoring kids. The only schooling I have besides high school is a medical transcription course.

me too - cant find anything

Wow...that is - great!!!!

I only started my job search Jan 1 and have been sending resumes like crazy. It sometimes stinks because for me most of the jobs would require a 30 mile commute so if they do not pay enough it just is not worth it to take the job. I have had 2 interviews and had to decline 1 job for the pay and the other I am crossing my fingers. The pay is okay, but holidays off, Mon-Fri and PTO is pretty good too so I am really hoping for that one. It is hard when applying for jobs because very rarely do they put the hourly rate.

I would love to know about that recruiter thing too. I guess maybe I should utilize my unemployment office to ramp up my resume. I have a ton of skills besides MT as I have only been doing this for 5 years, but no college degree.

Good luck to all you job seekers!!!!

Further education - Alice

Gather as much education as you can.

I'm also wondering if classes count when there is no degree involved? There are many classes we can take, even online, some free, some cheap, through such places as edu.org and vu.org. However, most of these don't lead to a degree, and degrees do help.

Also, for those who are considering switching to nursing, IMHO, don't stop with an Associate Degree. I did and I regret it. Were I not so old, I'd go for a bachelor's, but in some other field other than nursing.

I started college at 50 and graduated at 54. I have 32 years as an MT. I went for the interview today that pays $30 an hour today, and it went great. If I don't get hired I'll be shocked.

Oddly enough, this job doesn't require a degree at all, and the fact that I have one I had to convince him that I was not overqualified. Once he was convinced, he went from it being a 3-month assignment to a permanent position.

I posted my resume on Careerbuilder and Monster, and the 5 recruiters contacted me. I probably applied for over 1000 jobs on there. It just takes persistence. I've had a number of interviews, and I didn't get any of the others because they felt I was overqualified.

My point is...obviously they are wanting people without a degree. You just have to be persistent and use every resource.

Is Anyone Actively Looking For MT Work
Jun 04, 2014

Anything out there?  I don't have to make a lot of money like the olden days but I would love to work for an all American company who appreciates MTs skills and is not demeaning like Nuance is.  Fiesa QA and audits among other things have sent me from thinking Nuance is OK to Nuance is UGLY and UNDERHANDED.  ...

New Nuance MLS Actively Seeking Other Employment
Feb 14, 2015

I'm new here, and I see that you really can't make any money at this "company. There's no way I'm staying. There are other MT companies out there where I can do the same work for better pay. I'm also actively seeking in something other than MT, which I'd rather have. I won't quit until I find another job, but when I do find it, I will drop Nuance like a hot potato and not look back. I only hope I have the grace to give them 2 weeks' notice. ...

Recruiters
Nov 25, 2013

I've been thinking about how the recruiter who called me made Spheris sound wonderful, then Medquist took over, then M-Modal took over.  Then when I actually started, for a while it was OK, then I felt like I was duped about the working conditions. It seemed like something I have been through before, and now I remember.  I have never actually been in the military, but from what I was told by a couple people, the Army recruiters make it sound really good, and when you are in, it is terr ...

Ads From Recruiters
Feb 03, 2014

Responded to a recruiter ad recently because was curious about the ad.  The position sounded extremely good. Good line rate, paid time off, insurance. Ad was very specific about what they offered but vague on the company.  I bit. Recruiter called me back, very nice.  Everything sounded good. I was fired up and ready to go. Near the end of the call, I asked what company we were talking about.  The recruiter named 1 of the 2 biggies that have their own boards on ...

Recruiters Who Don't Keep Appointments! Sm
May 16, 2012

I have a very busy schedule and presently work 2 jobs. Plan the time for an interview and wait and wait on a call that doesn't come. This is not the first time I have been "stood up" by a recruiter and that company definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. Now another one. I waste my few off hours taking their tests and corresponding for this? Yes, they do treat us like bums. ...

Nuance Recruiters
Sep 10, 2014

Okay, if this is how this company runs, I will not take the job.  I applied for a job for acute care.  They offered me the job.  I turned it down because at the time I was afraid to leave MModal whom I have been with for over 17 years.  MModal now wants me to start working weekends, which I know in this profession, they were going to get me to do it sooner or later.  Then I applied for the Ambulatory side of Nuance as they said it is a M-F position.  Passed the test ...

Question About Oracle Recruiters
Sep 25, 2010

Seeing the post below, I have a question about Oracle recruiters.  I have applied there several times, have 15 years of experience, and still no word from them.  Are their recruiters just rude or what?  I wonder because I have the experience, but I have on my resume that I have satellite and 64-bit Windows Vista.  Could that be why they are not responding to me?  It would be nice if someone somewhere along the line would respond to me by saying they do not support satellite or Vista, or wha ...

http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Nuance-Transcription-Services-Company-Reviews-E537513_P3.htm   Maybe you should see what your current and previous transcriptionists feel about working for your disgusting, nitpicky, greedy, company.     I really feel the bulk of these companies need to be blatantly aware of what they are doing to the industry from the inside out.  If they continue to outsource for "cheaper payouts" then prepare for cheaper quality.   ...

Color Me Not Impressed With The Recruiters--sm
Nov 10, 2014

I am supposed to be moved to a new account and new platform with the stated purpose of me being placed on account that should have work (the move is not my choice).  The recruiters talked to me about placement and sent the offer letter.  I sent an email question about this on Friday (which is not when I wanted to deal with this as it was my day off but oh well).  Still nothing.  I do not want to sign the letter until my question is answered either.  Frustrating. ...

Question For Coding Recruiters/Hirers
Jun 08, 2015

Some recruiters/hirers posting here mentioned that you don't look at community college grads because they aren't properly trained with just a few exceptions.  1. Can you name some of the community colleges where you HAVE hired their qualified coding grads? (I know community colleges are "local" but many of their programs are online and accept out-of-state students.) 2. Along that same line, can you recommend training schools/programs that you've consistently hired qualified ...

Geesh, Recruiters Are Just Getting Ruder And Ruder
May 05, 2010

aren't they?!  Here's a tip, MTSOs:  The recruiter is the first impression we get of your company, and if you hire a rude blunt cranky recruiter or one who sounds like a used car salesman, many good MTs will just say forget it if this is the kind of management people they have....    Some are just plain scatter-brained too.  One recruiter actually emailed me and told me that I didn't have enough experience and didn't meet their qualifications (I ...
