Working with pet - Anon

Posted: Feb 02, 2011

I have a new pet - a dog - who wants to sit next to me while I work. Does anyone have any ideas how to "update" my chair so this is possible. She's not very big, only about 15-16 lbs but I have no idea how to adapt my chair to make this possible. TIA.

I put a pillow on the floor next to my chair, but - Jaz

have to be careful to not roll over her. How about a wide stool or something like that the dog can lay on next to your chair?

I know she wants to sit with you but maybe since - Olive

she is new, you could pull up a second chair next to yours with a comfy pillow or blanket. Get her used to this. I need elbow room and couldn't have someone share my chair.

you want her IN the chair? - Pet lover

never occurred to me you meant IN the chair! LOL!

I lay a dog pillow under my desk. That way I can "pet" my pup while I work and he thinks he's the boss of where I work!

yes in the chair! - anon

She insists on "touch." I got an extra bed tried putting it under the desk and then next to the chair but she doesn't think that's good enough. She wants me to sit on the couch and "keep her company." She likes snuggling up to my leg and I wouldn't mind that (she does lay still) but can't adapt my chair to please her!

That's what I have going on here too Olive! - Hayseed

It's the most coveted seat in the office...the one right next to my desk. Two dogs and a cat have to fight for it and sometimes it gets ugly!

That silly chair faces me, my desk, and the window, so for the animals it's like a "command post" and they can see all the action....but mainly it's to see what I'm eating and if there's a chance they will score any.

:-D

I have another chair pulled right next to me - sm - Sam

He has sat with me since he was a puppy (so I could keep my eye on him, LOL) but now when he knows I am going to work, he races in there and puts his paws up on the other office chair until I lift him up and sleeps with me while I work. Wish I was him a lot of the time!

I have a little chihuahua (sm) - RubySoho

[ In Reply To ..]
I got her when she was tiny, about 6 weeks old, and she would sit on my lap while I worked. By the time she was about 6 months old, she had to learn to position herself dead in the middle of my lap and sit straight ahead (literally looking straight ahead at the keyboard or tipping her head straight back to look at me) in order to sit with me while I worked. She'd stay there for a pretty long time, then get bored and want back down.

Now she just sits on the couch next to my desk, upon on the back of the couch on a pillow (her "throne" as we call it, LOL!) so she can keep her eye on me while I work. Any time I so much as shift in my chair, she hears it and opens her eyes to see where I'm going.

I don't know what kind of dog you have and I'm trying to visualize if it's practical to have a 15-pound puppy on one's lap while typing like I did my chihuahua. While your baby is obviously bigger than mine, I'm thinking maybe if it's a short but stocky pup it could sit centered in your lap while you work, or I think maybe even a chair with a bigger sitting area (more "butt room," LOL!) might be needed. Heck, you could probably even put a chair facing you next to your desk and position your baby there it can watch you work, like my baby does me.

BTW, I'm with the other poster...Too bad we can't train them to transcribe, LOL!

Congrats on your new "office mate" - Sunshine State MT

It sounds like you need a "double wide" chair! I did the same thing as RubySoho. My chihuahua mix as a puppy HAD to sit on my lap. She was a rescue and a very frightened little dog when we got her, so I felt I needed to accommodate her. She was and still is a lightweight, probably 8 pounds soaking wet. Anyways, like RubySoho, for it to work, she had to sit smack in the middle of my lap on a little pillow. She did that for a couple of months and now she has graduated to sitting ON my desk next to the window and absolutely loves it. She squirrel watches all day long!

Plus, I have 2 Min Pins with their own doggie beds, one on the left side of my chair and the other on the right side of my chair.

All 3 will be sleeping soundly but as soon as I push in my keyboard tray they know "momma" is getting up and they all get up, take a break with me, and we all go back to work.

I need my doggies in my office with me. They help me relax on stressful days. My husband said its looking like romper room with the dog begs, dog toys, bones. I'd have it no other way!

You have RubySoho, I have Her Royal Muttjesty - dovestar

[ In Reply To ..]
I sure hope you enjoy RubySoho as much as I enjoy Dottie Joy, aka "The Supervisor", aka "Her Royal Muttjesty. Dottie is a beagle-foxhound mix and loves to lay by my chair as I type. Dottie was run over by a train about 7 years ago and rescued by the SPCA. I heard about her on a radio show and we went to see her. It was love at first woof. Animal Planet filmed her story, so we now have a TV star who willingly gives out her "pawtograph".

hang a bicycle basket off the arm of the chair? or --- - anon

or a tray like at Sonic where your food hangs off the window.

sigh...nothing fits in my chair with my fat a**.

I have two cats and I found that putting a chair in my office with a soft pillow and blanket on it did the trick when it came to me not wanting them to sit with me while I worked as they both like to sit and sleep there while I am working.

I could not image my dog sitting in my lap while I work as I have a lab! - cindy

[ In Reply To ..]
My dog is 80 pounds, I can barely even lift him into the truck when we go to get him bathed. My other dog that passed last May was 90 pounds (lab and Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix)and he thought he was a 'lap' dog on the couch, etc. When he slept with us, he would get so close he was almost laying on top of you, but I love it. He was a like a big heating pad on my back and that felt good, but he would lay right next to my chair on the floor a lot when I was working and so does my lab that I have now. If he is not a rescue, you might want to just teach him to lay next to you on the floor on a bed or pillow, otherwise, get a larger chair, perhaps. Just make sure you love him lots!

Lap dog - Alice

[ In Reply To ..]
This reminded me of my mixed lab. When we first adopted him, he only weighed 15 pounds. I encouraged him to cuddle with me in my lap. He got used to it. But, he grew. Now, he is 95 pounds and insists on continuing to be a lap dog. If I had thought ahead, I wouldn't have taught him to be a lap dog.

Another mistake I made is that I would lure him into the house with a cookie whenever the neighbor was taunting him, causing him to bark. What I did not understand was that I was inadvertently training him to bark at the neighbors.
In his mind, the cookie was a reward for good behavior.

As an MT, I've learned a lot from my dog. He has taught me many lessons that I can apply to this job.

Have fun with your dog! Like children, they grow up too fast and are gone too quickly.

Had a dachshund who slept on my desk - fur-mama

[ In Reply To ..]
on his blankie. he was 35-40 pounds. we got him when he was 5 yrs old, so he was not used to the routine like my other dogs. consequently, he was a wreck when i was working, until i picked up his fat, juicy little legs and put him on the desk one day, and that did the trick.

Aw, I remember when mine was a puppy I typed w/him in my lap! now.. - CaliDeb

[ In Reply To ..]
He is 120 lb and when it is cold he lies in between the back of my chair and the wall heater, a distance of maybe 2-3 feet. He barely fits. I have to be soooo careful not to roll the chair over his tail. I should just make him move, but it is a comfort to have him there when I'm working in the dead of the night. During the daytime he will park himself right at the front door which is usually open, like my security or something.

Do you have a kitchen chair or inverted box the same height? - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
If so, then you might try putting it right up next to your chair, then take an old blanket or folded sheet that will fit over both. Maybe it will fool the dog into thinking it is one chair.

I put a chair next to mine with a blanket or towel in it - for padding for my cat.
