I'm DONE trying to decipher names - I am not doing it anymore

Posted: Aug 14, 2012

99% of the wasted "down time" I have in my work day is trying to decipher doctor names, patient names, referral names, dictator names, resident/assistant names and I'm literally sick to death of it.  From now on if I don't hear the name the VERY FIRST TIME it's said it's going to be LEFT BLANK.  No more listening to it over and over and over and over trying to catch the first syllable or the last, or even a piece of the name - I sometimes spend 5 whole minutes PER REPORT searching for names that are not annunciated clearly or spelled to fill in the ADT and I'm just not going to do it anymore.  I'm not being paid to do all these ridiculous name searches so they are about to get a whole helluva lot of blank ADTs from me.

not doing it anymore... - recentlyoutsourced

TOTALLY AGREE!!! I used to give it a 3-time rule...Now, if I can't get it the first time, it gets sent through with a blank. QA can figure it out. I don't get paid enuf to fiddle with it!

That's exactly what I'm going to do - thank you - anon

I'm going to do the same thing. Of ALL the things that annoy me about this job, this company, this software, etc it's that the names come through blank on ADT and we are expected to struggle through it until we find it. I often try many different spellings and name variations, sometimes it takes forEVVVER to get it right and I absolutely totally completely refuse to do it anymore. One time and one time only to catch the name from now on and if I don't get it, it gets sent in AS IS.

in DQS guidelines, it says you can phonetically - spell names (SM)

of docs in the report, and most client profiles allow you to phonetically spell patient names.

If the CP says to leave a blank, then do that.

On the ADT page, I fill in a blank line and then leave a QA note that says Dictator name unclear, not spelled and then I ship it right to the client. I am not getting docked pay because the doctor cant say his own name.

For a cc, I would leave Dr. _____ in the last name field and also leave QA note saying, cc name unclear.

Ditto same thing for the dreaded UNPAID cc reqs - sm

And referring doctor names, patient's family's - names, surrounding town

[ In Reply To ..]
names, etc. The list is endless of time-wasting unpaid labor.

Yep, surrounding towns is another one for sure - anon

Do these doctors think that the person typing their work is familiar with every facility and every town in their state that they can just fly through the name? I spent 5 whole minutes the other day searching for a certain town in one state that began with the letter S. It was the only part of the city name that was decipherable. 5 minutes doesn't sound like a lot but coupled with the time we spend deciphering doctor names, patient names, etc that comes to a hell of a lot of free labor for the company.

Can you imagine working at McDonald's and being told you can have the "privilege" of working there only if you agree to do all the "prep work" for free? That's essentially what we do.

Names - old and burned out

Haven't been doing it for a long time but instead of leaving blanks, I put in the dopiest spelling I can come up with.

Doc Names, Etc
Aug 11, 2011

Can someone explain to me why, if I get paid by the line, I spend so much time looking up doctor names, facility names, the local burger joint, etc, but I don't get paid for that? ??  I am going to throw in the towel with transcription and look for a job that pays by the hour.  This line stuff is a joke.  Can't get up speed or stay with a rhythm for stopping to try to find names of people, places and things. ...

Names On W2's
Jan 25, 2015

Anyone notice their W2 now actually says Nuance Transcription Services and no longer Transcend DBA Nuance... Last year there were lots of comments about our W2's (all of us, not just those who came in from Transcend) saying Transcend.  I even wrote HR to see what was up with that. They never told us about the change to Transcend and certainly didn't mention the change back to Nuance. Oh well.  Just an observation. ...

LOOKING UP NAMES AND ADDRESSES
Nov 12, 2009

Does anyone else ever have a problem with a doctor/nurse, etc. who sends out letters or just on regular reports who gives no complete names or addresses?  We have a place to go look them up but it does sometimes take a chunk out of my time doing it.  One or two minutes means a lot sometimes.  I have one doctor who dictates letters to "Dr. Smith, Dr. Jones," etc. and there are only about 10 of each of those listed and sometimes you cannot tell what the specialty is to look it up.&n ...

To Capitalize Or Not...department Names
May 24, 2010

When do you capitalize departments?  I have been in the biz for 10 years, and my current QA staff is giving me conflicting feedback on my capitalization.  One QA manager is giving me errors for not capitalizing, the other is giving me errors when I do!  I was always taught that you didn't capitalize the department unless it was preceded by the proper name of the hospital (XYZ Hospital Emergency Department, etc). Also, as far as specialties, how do you handle those?  For ...

Do You Think We Should Guess At Drug Names?
Nov 05, 2010

Am I overly concerned or do you think I may have a point?  I think the Word Help Board is invaluable and have always helped whenever I 100% knew the correct spelling.  But as I have been reading the questions, there seem to be more and more drug questions from drug lists, which means no point of reference.  There are also a few “allergic to: sounds like” questions.  When I first started working as a Medical Transcriptionist, QA was always:  “Leave a b ...

Drs. Who NEVER Input Patient Names.
Jun 27, 2012

How annoying is that? There are a few doctors on my account that don't bother inputting the patient name into the demographics, don't spell it, don't give a date of service...they just say a name and start dictating. They do this for every report, and it's been that way since I started working here! I have a rule where I only try 2 spellings of the name to find the patient. Otherwise it gets pended.
