I hope someone can help you out with a suggestion. Just want to say I sympathize. That happened to us when our hospital changed platforms one time....it wiped out YEARS of not only proper names of doctors I had added to spellcheck but also any new drug brand names I had added, etc.....only had the typical spell check/medical spell check words in there.

Even worse, though--one of my coworkers had to take her computer in-house for IT to do something with, and the IT guy somehow accidentally wiped out all of her templates and abbreviation expanders she had put in over the years. She literally cried. What a huge blow to one's productivity that would be!

Good luck...hope you figure something out. When that happened to me, I only knew to keep adding them to spellcheck again as I went along.

As you start over, consider this tip... - Hope it helps...

At the first MTSO I worked for (years ago), they had a list of the doctors in their system -- what they called the DL. You would type in "DL" and it would produce a list of doctors to choose from.

This was a great time saver, and I learned from that. Ever since, whenever I have a difficult physician or PA name, I add it to my expansion and preface with DL, such as dlsartova would expand to Sartova.

Prefacing with the DL also puts them in a convenient list in your expansion file.

I worked for a company that provided all the equipment and software, including shorthand. If one is trying to become an independent contractor, where would they find such things as expanders, an online Stedman's Dictionary and drug references? I have some book references but find it to be much more time-consuming having to look things up in a book than having it available at my fingertips. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am doing this from ipad, so please forgive typos. As far as books, you can order whatever you need from stedmans. Also look for others who might be selling books. I currently only have quicklook drug book on my computer, but i plan on getting my most used books as electronic versions. As for an expansion program, there are many to choose from. I use the same expansion program i started with. It works similarly to autocorrect. Others prefer something with more bells and whistles. There may be info on the tech board.

Expanders are not found in stedman's books or any books they are a program like Instant Text or you can set up in Word the autocorrect to act like an expander.
One good thing about using Word autocorrect or having your own expander program is you that you don't have to worry about losing them going from platform to platform. I know my IT has worked with every platform I've used. The problem with autocorrect in Word is if the platform doesn't work in Word then you can't use it.

Does Anyone Have A Reliable Source To Look Up Doctor's Last Names?
Feb 28, 2010

This patient I am typing now saw a Dr. s/l At-a-lo-ni but PA doesn't spell it out and doesn't say what kind of doctor he/she is, what state they practiced in, etc.  Looked up on google but really came up with nothing.  Thanks!   ...

Overheard A Doctor Telling Another Doctor...
Oct 15, 2010

20 years ago when the DRG's hit the hospitals, one  was complaing to the other... "they treat doctors like a bunch of old dogs now".  Well, that's how  MTs are being treated now.  Why on God's green earth do the MT services require all MT's to work at least one weekend day every week (Friday's and Monday's  don't count). Every ad I see on the Job Seeker board requires weekends.  Are they sadistic or something.  Why do we put u ...

Doc Names, Etc
Aug 11, 2011

Can someone explain to me why, if I get paid by the line, I spend so much time looking up doctor names, facility names, the local burger joint, etc, but I don't get paid for that? ??  I am going to throw in the towel with transcription and look for a job that pays by the hour.  This line stuff is a joke.  Can't get up speed or stay with a rhythm for stopping to try to find names of people, places and things. ...

Names On W2's
Jan 25, 2015

Anyone notice their W2 now actually says Nuance Transcription Services and no longer Transcend DBA Nuance... Last year there were lots of comments about our W2's (all of us, not just those who came in from Transcend) saying Transcend.  I even wrote HR to see what was up with that. They never told us about the change to Transcend and certainly didn't mention the change back to Nuance. Oh well.  Just an observation. ...

LOOKING UP NAMES AND ADDRESSES
Nov 12, 2009

Does anyone else ever have a problem with a doctor/nurse, etc. who sends out letters or just on regular reports who gives no complete names or addresses?  We have a place to go look them up but it does sometimes take a chunk out of my time doing it.  One or two minutes means a lot sometimes.  I have one doctor who dictates letters to "Dr. Smith, Dr. Jones," etc. and there are only about 10 of each of those listed and sometimes you cannot tell what the specialty is to look it up.&n ...

Patient Names
Mar 15, 2012

So, this being the most friendly and up-to-date board around regarding MT practices, can I get some opinions about the HIPAA 'privacy rule' and your doctors using patient names in their notes, clinic or otherwise. I'm DONE Trying To Decipher Names
Aug 14, 2012

99% of the wasted "down time" I have in my work day is trying to decipher doctor names, patient names, referral names, dictator names, resident/assistant names and I'm literally sick to death of it.  From now on if I don't hear the name the VERY FIRST TIME it's said it's going to be LEFT BLANK.  No more listening to it over and over and over and over trying to catch the first syllable or the last, or even a piece of the name - I sometimes spend 5 whole minutes PER R ...

To Capitalize Or Not...department Names
May 24, 2010

When do you capitalize departments?  I have been in the biz for 10 years, and my current QA staff is giving me conflicting feedback on my capitalization.  One QA manager is giving me errors for not capitalizing, the other is giving me errors when I do!  I was always taught that you didn't capitalize the department unless it was preceded by the proper name of the hospital (XYZ Hospital Emergency Department, etc). Also, as far as specialties, how do you handle those?  For ...

Do You Think We Should Guess At Drug Names?
Nov 05, 2010

Am I overly concerned or do you think I may have a point?  I think the Word Help Board is invaluable and have always helped whenever I 100% knew the correct spelling.  But as I have been reading the questions, there seem to be more and more drug questions from drug lists, which means no point of reference.  There are also a few “allergic to: sounds like” questions.  When I first started working as a Medical Transcriptionist, QA was always:  “Leave a b ...

Drs. Who NEVER Input Patient Names.
Jun 27, 2012

How annoying is that? There are a few doctors on my account that don't bother inputting the patient name into the demographics, don't spell it, don't give a date of service...they just say a name and start dictating.
