long tests - schnauzermom

Posted: Mar 02, 2013

I got an invitation to test for a transcription company.  This company does not do any doctor's notes, but they do other medical type work such as meetings, etc.  On their site they have 3 tests and you can do all or as many as you feel comfortable doing.  I downloaded one of the tests to check it out and it is almost 30 minutes long.  I am ambivilent about taking such a long test with no compensation just for them to decide if I can do the work.  What do you people think about such long tests?

I'd check length of all 3, but it seems fishy to me - nm

Well if the company does meetings and such then - its a little bit different than

[ In Reply To ..]
regular medical transcription and therefore the tests would be different. If you are going to be transcribing meetings, they will be longer than the average dictation you are use to doing and maybe thats why the tests are longer.

They still would not need a 30 minute test to determine how you transcribe a meeting. There have been too many cases of companies having test-takers transcribing actual jobs not to be suspicious.

If you want the job - what

[ In Reply To ..]
is your plan for avoiding the test? If you don't want to take the test, don't take it, but you cannot then expect to get the job if you want it.

That's not the point ... - anon

There have been multiple instances of companies posting actual work to be done as tests so they can get work done for free.

Well, if she does not - take

[ In Reply To ..]
the test, what do you suggest she do if she wants the job? She still may not get it if she takes the test and doesn't do well enough, but she definitely will not get it if she does not take the test.

In any event, a long test for that type of transcription is probably understandable since they need to know whether applicants can distinguish among voices over the course of a lengthy meeting and whether they can follow the back-and-forth exchanges and keep all the participants sorted out as the meeting progresses.

If she doesn't want to take the test because it's too long, that's up to her. She could ask them to pay her for taking the test, but it is unlikely to be successful.

So, do you know for a fact that - is what is

[ In Reply To ..]
happening here? It looks like a case of some sort of personal vendetta or paranoia. If you don't want to tak the test, don't take it. If she wants the job, she's going to need to take the test.

personal vendetta when the company is not named? Further, the poster did not state what was true in this case. The original poster expressed suspicion about the test obviously aware of previous companies that have had applicants transcribe actual work to have it done for free. Again, a 30 minute test is not necessary.

If it means getting employment, I would do it. Your reward will be the compensation you obtain if you are hired.

I agree with anon. A 30 minute transcription - test equals about SM

[ In Reply To ..]
90? minutes of transcription or more probably since no familiarity. This is not necessary. They could have you test 5 minutes of it, maybe another one with 5 minutes of that, etc. I would be very suspicious about this. I don't care if it is general transcription and meetings, makes no difference. I personally would not do it. JMO.

Along with above, they could do a short grammar - and spelling test SM

This transcription business everywhere has become full of people who spend a lot of time trying to find ways to get quality work for minimum wage pay, even using so-called testing with real time work. How low can these people go until karma kicks in.

Transcription Tests
Dec 03, 2011

Why in the heck don't employers give you at least some basic instructions for a transcription test? Some want you to format, others don't. Some want you to edit punctuation, etc., others want you to transcribe verbatim. It's very frustrating because they all seem to want something different, yet most don't bother to give instructions.  It's like they expect us to be mindreaders!    ...
