Will EHR leave MTs jobless? - ss

I just had a chance to see the NextGen EHR demo videos. The incentives for using EHR from the insurances companies are huge. It amounts to $3,000 per doctor per month.

The doctor won't be able to fiddle with the computer to create EHR. Even with the current dictation types, the doctor would make some sort of a note or something to remember the main paints to dictate. This note is sufficient for the assistants to create EHRs. Probably an assistant will be able to do it. She can create 20 EHR reports within an hour. Almost no transcription is required.

What do you think? What percentage of MT volume will decrease to EHR implementation, keeping in mind the 2014 deadline for it?

No. What will leave MTs jobless is American - corporate greed, and AHDI.

I lost my IC job to EHR. The small company I worked for lost their biggest client when the practice was sold and the new owners used EHR exclusively. I believe I am the first in a long line this will happen to.

The group of doctors I worked for went to EMR in June and got rid of their two transcriptionists (me being one of them). I worked locally, and I find that almost all the ads in the paper for jobs now state that you have to know some form of EMR. I should point out that these are medical secretarial jobs because they aren't employing transcriptionists any more.

Me too, lost 90% of my work to EMR/EHR just in time for Christmas last year. Been hanging on for 2 months, logging on and finding little or no work. MTSO needs to replace this lost account to justify the cut they take. They want me at their disposal to do the little bit of work that trickles in. Going to look for a job outside the MT industry. Figure starting with someone new means less than minimum wage for several months until you get used to things and are actually productive. Why bother? About the time you get used to a doctor, they're pulled and you're on to someone new. I think we're in the process of being flushed, and I'm jumping out of the bowl. Figure it's okay to flop around on the bathroom floor for a while rather than go down the sewer tube...

I'm a small company, just myself, and I had a huge derm account making great money. They went to EMR in 2007 and have only found one doc since then. This has been 3 years. I'm about ready to give up. Just been scraping by. I really despise EMR but I am being selfish. I'm sure it is good so docs can access records quicker. I think some docs will still use transcriptionists though. I had one office that did this but my stupid satellite internet wouldn't work with a VPN. Good luck everyone who has been displaced by EMR.

Where did you get the idea that EMR is a good thing for anyone? The only people it is good for is the people who sell the software. They make the doctors sign these outrageous contracts, then nickel and dime them for every little thing. It is turning out to be a nightmare and the patients are screaming and howling because their doctors don't pay attention to them anymore and then hand them a bill for the extra time it takes to point and click. The records are fiction, full of superfluous text and gibberish and the EMR vendors are laughing all the way to the bank.

My doctor has used it for over - 4 years.

Thanks for the replies and the link. I am wondering why a company that is building EMR software (they are expecting a large amount of MT jobs to move out to EMR(?), at the same time is investing and buying Spheris, hiring Indians....Maybe they want to teach a lesson to Indians by hiring them until the accounts go to EMR and then fire them. Be sure you have enough work hours every 12 months to get family medical leave if you need it. You will need to have 1250 hours for the past 12 months.
