What is with most jobs requiring XP? - Stymied

Posted: Dec 07, 2011

XP is outdated and no longer available to purchase or supported by Microsoft as per my understanding.

Isn't Windows 7 the norm now?  I can understand not wanting 64-bit systems for their platforms.... but ONLY XP ??

Most of the time it is the fault of the hospital being unwilling to update their system so it will interface with the newer operating systems.

If you go to a computer repair shop, they may have an old CPU they could sell you with XP on it. This is what I did. If it's a well paying job, it is worth it. Good luck!

You can also purchase a copy of Windows XP on ebay for very little money. You can download service Pack 3 from Microsoft, and updates are still available.

I bought a dual processor, 2 gig for less than $200 back in April. I haven't had any issues. I love tigerdirect.com!!!

Craig's list - SM

I bought a real good XP refurbish on Craig's list and am saving my windows & for personal use and for the day we get upgraded. Just another option.

The norm differs by industry/circumstances - Windows 7 is default for new computers, but

there is a total OS design break between Windows Vista/7 and XP, with little backwards compatibility, and almost every sane IT department skipped a Vista upgrade.

Moving to Windows 7 means totally rewriting and/or buying new a whole pile of software. As long as a company has more applicants than it needs who can deal with XP, they don't have much incentive to take on the expense and headaches of an OS upgrade. Plus, as noted, hospitals are always 2 or 3 generations behind on OS upgrades, largely because they are always loaded with old legacy systems and rolling out a new OS and getting everything to talk to it is a monumental undertaking for them.

It could be worse. Some MTSOs were still only hiring people with WP DOS skills years into the Windows era.

You can buy Windows 7 with XP interface. sm - anon

I looked into a new Dell PC and that was an option. I'm not sure if its 32 or 64 bit. You can also purchase the software yourself (pricey) but read the fine print on the box because your PC has to meet certain parameters for it to work properly. Again, you can consult your local (mom and pop) PC shop who might be able to advise you. Hope this was helpful.

XP Interface & 32/64 Bit Programs - Too Pooped to Compute

[ In Reply To ..]
It's true that Windows 7 has an XP compatibility function BUT the account I do has four different sets of software, and NONE of them work even with the XP compatibility.

So before you go spend money on a new computer or upgrading to Windows 7, check with the IT people first.

Another thing to watch out for is 32/64 bit programs. Most MT programs will not work on a 64 bit program, even if they are Windows 7 compatible. A lot of them require a 32-bit program, and it's really hard to find a new computer with 32-bit. Your best bet is to upgrade an older computer to the 32-bit version of 7 in this instance.

So again, check with the IT people and be very careful what you purchase, it could be an expensive mistake. Hope this helps. :)

Jobs Requiring Windows 7

In scanning the job wanted board, I noticed that many companies only use and accept Windows 7.  Is this pretty typical?  I have Windows 8.1 so I'm wondering how limiting this will be.   ...

Landmark Now Requiring.....
Apr 09, 2014

....line requirements per hour. Did anyone receive this e-mail this morning? It said she will let us what the requirements actually are forthcoming. I know this is the norm with most MT companies, but one of the reasons why I have stayed with Landmark so long was I could basically name my own quota and own hours. Since this was my secondary job, I could fit it in when I had free time throughout the day. Oh well....not really complaining, just surprised a little. ...

Requiring A Business Name
Mar 11, 2015

I have applied to a transcription company that requires me to register for a business name.  I have been in transcription for 15 years as an independent contractor just with a 1099 and my accountant says that it is not necessary for me to register for a business name.  Does anyone have any information on this.   Thank you. ...

Requiring Email Response In 5 Min
Jun 01, 2010

Got to thinking about this, wouldn't this be something agreed upon (contract?) before starting with the company?  Otherwise, threatening to fire you for not responding to an email sounds like a ripe labor law violation.  Wrongful termination?  Bait and switch?  Plain unethical.     ...

Company Requiring Set Hours For IC
Nov 05, 2014

I thought ICs could not be required to work specific shifts and hours, but one company is dogmatic that they WILL do as they say or hit the road.  The hiring person says that you contract to work specific times, which SHE specifies, not your choice.  Doesn't that make you an employee?  Or am I reading the BOLI laws wrong? ...

Contract Requiring Transcriptionists To Work For Only One Company

New IC Contract Requiring Response To E-mails In 5 Minutes
May 29, 2010

Got a new kind of rudely worded in places contract from company I've been with a little bit.  I don't care about agreeing to 98% on quality audits, or agreeing to provide a certain number of minutes/lines of work a day and specifying which days, or agreeing to 24-hour TAT, but there is a section that we must respond to e-mails or any other form of communication within 5 minutes during active work hours, otherwise without an acceptable excuse (power/internet outage or emergency) af ...

A Company That I Applied For Is Requiring Business License
Jun 03, 2014

A company that I applied for is requiring that I have myself and/or my company licensed in my municipality as a businessowner before they hire me to work for them as an IC.  I am wondering how do you go about doing this and is this now becoming the "new norm" for working as an IC?  This is the first I have ever heard of such other than having to get an employee identification number through the IRS, which I have already done so.  I contacted my township supervisor and he said he knew nothing ...

It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment.  If an employer can PROMISE IN ...

Where Do I Find The Status Of Jobs And Number Of Jobs?

Will We All Be Out Of Jobs?
Dec 02, 2009

These eScription, Nuance, EMR, etc. posts are all very sobering.  Does anybody think that we'll all be out of jobs in 5 years, 3 years???  and will we be cut loose quickly or slowly phased out?  given enough notice?? etc.??   I think I'm getting to the point where working in a grocery store is starting to look more and more appealing.  The thing that contradicts all this is that most of the companies constantly beg for extra work, higher production, consis ...

Once And For All - There Are No Jobs!

On almost every thread somebody mentions their finances are in dire straights.  And on almost every thread somebody whose life is just peachy demands to know why they "let" their finances get shaky and why they didn't just "get another job before things got so bad".  We are not sitting around just wringing our hands, as is so often implied.  Many of us have been applying, constantly, for months; with more entering the job search every day, the competition gets harder and hard ...

Jobs Out There Not MT, Sm

I just ran into a local job already, MOWING GRASS.  The lady's lawn mowing man just finished school and is quitting the mowing.  She paid him $1400 last month to mow, run the weedeater, keep weeds out of the flowers, etc. ($25 an hour).  My husband does handyman work and is always being asked to mow or if he knows anyone.  He hates it.  I like it.  I think I just might take this on.  (Probably for less money, though.  She thought that was too much, b ...

MT Jobs !

So, I am about to finish a medical transcription certificate program through a community college. I have started going through these boards and I am starting to get nervous about job possibilities.
