What happened to the money??? - Naive

Posted: Oct 08, 2012

I know, I know, but I'm desparate!! I used to work for a company who, I thought, paid extremely well; almost $40,000/year.  Now, I'm a single mom, working from home, full time, and can barely make it pay check to pay check.  Does anyone know a great paying company? Naive, I know, but somebody out there has gotta know something??? I'm not a newbie, I've been transcribing acute care for over 15 years.  But, this is not working out at all.  After my divorce, I was so sure I would find a job w/no problem -- wake up call -- uh, this was not the case.  Also, I just knew from my prior employment that I would definitely be able to make it on my own, as I made great money before.  So, please, any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! I do not have a foot pedal, and I am not a contract typist. I'm looking for straight nonverbatim typing and great pay, like I used to have:)

thanks for viewing!!  Thanks for your help!!!

I wish you the best of luck, but unfortunately the pay and jobs are just not there anymore. I have accepted a position at the county where I live because on two salaries we (hubby and I)are not making it when I used to bring home about 4 grand a month. I am lucky to get half that working full time now typing verbatim. Its really criminal! Unfortunately too, the company I work for lost one of the biggest accounts, the one I type on, lucky for me, I knew it was coming, and have been job hunting, finally through with preemployment process for the county. It was hard getting on with them, the wait has been 2 months, but it will be worth it in the end, great benefits, fully vested at 8 years, and providing my kids with the best possible future with a secure position!! My husband also works for the county so retirement will be nice, his of course better than mine, because he has been there a lot longer - The money we will save by me having my own paid for insurance is close to 300$ month!

Wow!! Good luck to you!! I bet it is hard to get on to work for county. I have always thought about doing this, but never knew where to start, and also never even thought I would have a chance. I'm thinking of changing my career too; I'm ready for some real physical labor!

First off, you are sunk without a footpedal. Secondly, the workforce has changed and not for the better. "Quantity over quality." I have been at this for 32 years -- unemployed since February, homeless, living in a motel at $50 a day -- I now get $190 a week in UE and food stamps changed because the poverty level did so now getting $16 a month -- OH joy!!!

I am so very sorry to hear about you! However, I do happen to know the company where I am employed is hiring? And, you are totally correct, when I have some extra funds I definitely need to invest in a foot pedal! Of course, I am only using the company's. Good luck to you and think positively!! Even though I'm complaining, I know it is wrong and I should be extremely thankful for what I do have. I'll keep you in my prayers and think the best for you!

Good jobs still exist! sm - meg

They are out there, I have one. I work for a hospital as an employee, based at home. Full bennies and good pay, bonus on top with no cap. 8 hour days, paid overtime if needed. Several in my department are making over 50K with all the perks of being an employee--lots of vacation time, holidays paid, etc. I did 45K last year.

Keep looking and apply everywhere you can, even if they aren't posting jobs. That's how a lot get hired in my department. When a spot opens up, they go to apps on file.

Be willing to be flexible--it makes all the difference. Offer to work in house for training/probation, etc. and then go home after that. If they use VR--go with it. If you are making good money you can afford day care if needed. Find a way to make it work.

Good luck in your search! It may take time but there ARE jobs out there that are good jobs, not having to working 24/7 to make ends meet. Keep looking until you find one!

BIG MONEY
Jul 28, 2010

Okay, so I signed on with Transcend because they said, "Do you want to be guaranteed $900 per pay period as full time?" Well, sure. That sure reeled me in. I had always been afraid they ran out of work. Now it turns out that you HAVE to earn $900 IN ORDER TO BE full time. Big difference! It's like saying, "If you win the Olympic gold medal, you'll be guaranteed a first-place finish!" Or, "If you win the election, you'll be guaranteed more votes than your opponent!" It's so ba ...

How Do I Get My Money?!
Nov 21, 2011

Ok, finally, the horrors have happened to me. All was well, but now I'm getting seriously pissed. I work 8 hour shifts 5 days a week. Those hours are mandatory. My pay is equalling less than minimum wage. I e-mailed the company asking them about having to pay me minimum wage given the mandatory hours. The only response I got was "I'll look into it." That was over a week ago. In addition, the platform we use that records our lines is not recording all my jobs! I write down all the job ...

If You're In It Just For The Money, Don't Become An MT
Sep 03, 2012

I've had the same line rate (9 cpl) for 5 years, and I notice the new accounts they offer MTs pay 7.5 or 8 cpl at most. I must admit, though that I do work for a great company (I've been with them 12 years); they offer lots of flexibility (no required shifts or hours, just a reasonable line quota), payment promptly by direct deposit twice a month like clockwork, an easy to use transcription platform and wonderful QA and support staff. I have a lot of job satisfaction, though for my yea ...

I want to know when we are gettiing more money. Not interested in how exciting things are. I just need an email with the exact amount, NOW.  NOTHING ELSE. Don't want it tied into bonus because FIESA is manipulated to prevent bonuses. You did not hear us "loud and clear." WE WANT MORE MONEY. NOW. We don't want to hear about your studies or your excitement or new ways of exploring things in the usual vague Nuance-speak. Just send an email with the amount and the exact d ...

Where Does The Extra Money Go?
Sep 27, 2010

I assume that the MT companies set up a contract with the client for them to pay on a per-line basis.  Of course, they charge more than they pay us; that's how they make their money & that's fine.  But what I'm wondering is... when we get a report that comes in as VR instead of straight typing, where does the extra money go, since we get paid less for VR.  I feel like I work just as hard, if not harder on VR than typing a report.  So why don't we make ...

Does Anybody Make Any Money At This? Sm
Jan 18, 2011

I've heard of more MTs NOT making any money than making money.  I've worked from home before but had to work full-time from home and part time at the hospital just to pay the bills then ended up quitting at home and went back to the hospital full time because I could make more money working from the hospital 40 hours than working 60 hours between the two.  I loved working from home but I couldn't make any money at it.  But at the time I only had 2 years' ...

The Q Must Be Making A Lot Of Money Off Me.
Feb 13, 2011

I calculated my hourly pay for this week. Mind you, I gave it all my effort every day this week. Drum roll..... I made $6 per hour. Because we have to be paid at least minimum wage, I get paid $8 per hour. My accounts are 99% ASR. I have been getting paid minimum wage for sometime now. If they weren't making plenty of money off me, they would have let me go some time ago. ...

For Those Making Little Money (or Who've Had A Big Cut In Pay) - Sm
Feb 23, 2012

Day after day, I read comments here about people making less than minimum wage... or women who used to make a solid middle class living at this who now cry when they look at their W2... or who made in 2011 what they made in 1993. I'm curious to know why you continue to put up with this.  What is holding you back from seeking a better situation?  What are your circumstances?  Do you have low self-esteem?  Trapped in Appalachia with 2 hours to the closest hospital?  ...

More Money Editing??
Mar 07, 2013

I have been a transcriptionist for 30+ years. This past year, the hospital I was working for replaced myself and 27 other fabulous ladies with an outside service. MTs Making Big Money
May 07, 2013

Just saw some gab on a mt group on facebook (not naming which), stating that people are out there making 800 a week on straight typing. Where are these jobs...I want one. This discussion had me thinking that I missed the boat somewhere or someone is telling tales... ...

Making No Money
Aug 31, 2013

I work for a company that I make NO money.  YES, I am seeking other employment, I'm not just sitting there whining about it, but rather just keeping some income while I look for more income.  I have barely had work this week and even when I do have work, the VR system is so bad that I really don't clear minimum wage.  So, today, apparently they are behind and I'm getting emails every hour or so that say "You ladies need to jump in and help, make this money while you can"  I me ...

Has This Happened To You?
Dec 21, 2009

I just wondered...has anyone ever made a mistake on a report (which was your fault and you readily admit you screwed up) and get an email stating:  please explain why you made that mistake because the client is waiting for an explanation??!!!  WTH?  Yes, I purposely made that error because I wanted too?  I enjoy making critical errors?  My error was most likely a keystroke error that I failed to catch..I admit it.  I try to be as careful as possible but I am human. ...

What Happened To Me?
Apr 21, 2010

I started my bartending class yesterday.. first time I have done anything outside the house in 7 years.  I was terrified. I don't think I really realized how isolating and stressful working for the Q at home really was.  I had almost forgotten what it was like to interact with real people, doing something that was real and down to earth. But I had a wonderful time, terrified though I was.  I still feel like I've been totally reborn, and I am so relieved to be out of th ...
