Transcriptionist skips the big jobs... - wallen

Posted: Sep 01, 2011

Having an issue at work - one person skips the "big" jobs and leaves them for the rest of the transcriptionists to type. I personally, if I know for sure she did, I will skip it as well, but we have a girl working from home who gets so mad and wants me to do something about it. I have no idea what to do. We all have been told by my boss (I am the coordinator) to do the jobs as they come in, and not to skip them. She denies skipping jobs, as well all do, but she does do it.  Her personality is such that she can never be wrong and gets offended very easily.

Not quite sure.... - confused

Due to some of your typos, I'm a little confused as to what you are saying (not criticizing, just unsure...). I can't quite tell if you are saying you are or are not able to tell if this person is cherry-picking or not. As a coordinator, if you CAN tell she is doing such, um, put your big-girl panties on and tell her to knock it off or there will be consequences. Of course, consequences need to be cleared with your supervisor, but hey, this is what a coordinator is supposed to do.

P.S. Re-reading this. Are you saying "as we all do" in reference to skipping jobs? Again, a bit unclear on that. If that is the case, and you are including yourself in the skipping jobs part, you need to knock that off as well, because you have no leg to stand on in telling anyone anything and frankly don't think you are the right person for the job that you apparently hold. If this is not the case, skip this paragraph. JMHO...

I am saying that we all denied the fact that we were skipping jobs, because we don't. But she does.

You're the coordinator - Do something about it

If you're the coordinator, then you need to go to the supervisor with whatever proof you can gather that this person is skipping jobs and either you get the authority to do something about it or you make your supervisor do something about it. It's just that simple.
RE skipping - - My problem is

I get paid by the report and I have many skippers on my account that take only short plain films. I have been left with the 2, 3, 5 and up minute reports. My team leader has tried by the coordinate and management have said "KS will not address skipping". This makes it a free for all. I have even sent screen shots that shows the names of the skippers. Very frustrating, so I just started skipping along with them. I am not going to be the only "dummy" doing the longer jobs or the interventional examinations that take forever. I had one that took 30 minutes to do.
Please enlighten me. If paid by the line, why are long - jobs paid less? Thanks. NM

A lot of radiology jobs are paid per report - Because they are usually very short
[ In Reply To ..]
which is why the long ones suck and no one wants to do them.
not all radiology positions pay per report, so not always true. - cpl, rad, longer the better. NM

Okay, thanks for the clarification.

If you work for a good company who pays at least a fair wage, there will be plenty to take her place if she gets too "upset" about it.

Honestly, Wallen, you might want to think about taking some classes or read up on supervisory techniques if this is all new to you. I'm not being sarcastic or ugly. I'm simply saying if you don't know how to handle something like this, that might be something you want to explore. My coordinator minces no words in telling us what our company policy is, and I, as an employee, appreciate that. I've been in the supervisory capacity as well in the past, and tactfully direct is always the best policy. Just be sure you have your supervisor's support before you say anything you can't back up. As middle management, you can't be too thin-skinned or think someone won't "like" you if you tell them how it is. Part and parcel of the job. There will always be those who push the envelope as far as they can, if they think they can get away with it.

Just Another Vent About Jobs, No Jobs, Requirement Of Jobs, Etc.
Aug 18, 2010

It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment.  If an employer can PROMISE IN ...

Where Do I Find The Status Of Jobs And Number Of Jobs?
Nov 26, 2012

I tried entering my ID plus dep on the Fluency for Transcription page and it said my account was inactive.  Okay, so I tried twice with Remedy to get it reactivated.  Both times I got emails telling me it was working.  Tried again and no luck.  Am I on the right page, the one with the hideous orange splash, the same one we use to find our stats?  Any help appreciated, I really don't want to have to call tech support if I don't have to.  Do I even need to d ...

And To Think I'm Now A Transcriptionist
Oct 20, 2010

In posting a reply in a different thread, it brought back a memory I thought I'd share.  I had just turned 18 and my mom had just had surgery.  I went to the hospital to visit her but wasn't sure where she was.  The nurses asked me what surgery did my mom have.  I replied, "A vasectomy."  Oh my how the nurses laughed!  They replied, "Oh no honey, I think you mean a hysterectomy."  And look at me now, been an MT for nearly 20 years! ...

May 05, 2011

TTS is recruiting, that is ironic! - but so true to form in this business.  Every day I run out of work at some point during my shift and they say "We will let you know when it starts coming back in."  Meanwhile I am making no money.  I used to be a happy, loved my job, transcribing in the hospital - over 10 years ago.  Since my hospital farmed out to these companies that I have tried to work for - NOT happy, not even able to earn a decent living.   H ...

Transcriptionist To Coder
Nov 14, 2011

Hello everyone.  I have posted here before about this topic. Frustrated ED Transcriptionist
Jan 21, 2012

Frustrated that even though I have stressed my proficiency in ED work, I am still forced to do other work types first, while yet others are getting ED work types in their "pools"... I would think you would want someone who types fast in a certain area be allowed to crank that work out first and then when it runs out, let the other work types they are not so good at roll into their pool....  Frustrated ...

Veterinary Transcriptionist?
Sep 13, 2012

Hello all-   I am a licensed veterinary technician that also got a certification as a medical transcriptionist after I had my 2nd child. I am looking to work from home part time and having no luck at the moment finding a job. But as I sit here and read and ponder.... do any of you know of any veterinarians that send out transcriptioning? Been A Transcriptionist For Over 10 Years
Nov 13, 2013

I have been a transcriptionist for over 10 years and I recently started a job for a small transcription company that requires 100% accuracy for all reports.  I continually get flagged with emails saying, "Please find the punctuation mistake and apply back with why" These are most always just one or two comma mistakes in the whole report.  Do all of you turn in reports with absolutely no comma or semicolon mistakes at all or am I just an inadequate transcriptionist?  Frustrated. ...

You must have medical terminology knowledge and be able to pass a spelling test with a score of 80%. I would prefer to start my career in a hospital setting so that ...

Canadian Medical Transcriptionist
Mar 14, 2010

Can someone please explain to me why Canada is considered OFFSHORE?  We have the same extremely strict confidentiality and medical data security laws and, in fact, tougher standards in the definitions with Independent Contractor versus employee status.  Why is Canada considered offshore?  It's not nearly like sending something to India or Pakistan where you don't know who is working on the dictation or what the ulterior purpose is.  Why can't the two countries just get along? ...

How Does VR Make Sense For The Transcriptionist?
Sep 10, 2010

Company A pays an experienced transcriptionist/MLS 3 or 4 cpl to edit VR.  Company A boasts about how this makes for a faster turnaround time on everything.  Company A tries to tell seasoned MTs with years of experience that their productivity will actually go UP if they learn to be good little VR editors. Company A apparently fails to realize that some transcriptionists can also do basic math pretty well, and can see that they are actually getting paid less to d ...
