I researched on Indeed Jobs. At Parkland Hospital the requirement to work as a Medical Transcriptionist is to have a certificate in medical transcription or at least one year of medical typing experience. You must be able to type at least 40-59 words per minute with a minimum of three errors. You must be able to operate a dictaphone. You must have medical terminology knowledge and be able to pass a spelling test with a score of 80%. I would prefer to start my career in a hospital setting so that I am able to have some coaching while on the job. Then I wouldn't mind working from home after I have received on the job experience so that i will be more comfortable working at home.

I started in a hospital with coaching from others, it indeed was a great opportunity. that was over 40 years ago. I know I would not have have been able to make it at home without it. But 40 years ago, working at home was not even a possibility, who would have thought it would end up that way.

Entry level of $26,000. You mean if I start over now I could make that much. I have not see that much in about 12 years.

First of all, don't believe that any hospital - still hiring MTs plans on - (sm) -

keeping them any longer than is necessary to get a front-end SR/point-and-click, no-MT-necessary program up and running. Then you'll be unceremoniously dumped, with little to no advance notice. At least you'll get unemployment.

I've been an MT since 1975. In the heyday of transcription (late 1980s to early 1990s) I was making about $45K per year. Fast forward to my last job with an MTSO (Acusis), and I was working a 60-hour week there (as opposed to a 40-hr week at my hospital job), and my last year there only made about $12,500 in total. These companies ALL suck, and none of them are even worth the time, electricity and bandwidth it takes to apply for their crappy jobs. India can HAVE them, with my blessings.

Well, I just made $102 for the week. $102 x 52 weeks is about $5400. And that is with 42 years experience. that does not even come close to the entry level. Just saying. . . This is such a sad profession anymore which is now becoming just "a job." SAD, SAD, SAD.

Is that a current job description for Parkland? I'm questioning it because no one uses Dictaphones any more and when typing speed is measured they usually expect something in the range of 80-90 WPM, that requirement sounds like it was written in the days when everyone used typewriters. I would also not be surprised if Parkland is outsourcing. I work on site but there are very few good MT jobs left anywhere. If you want to work at home doing straight production transcription you will not make any money.

It's worse than "just a job." We used to be in such a well paid and respected profession. Struggling just to make minimum wage sucks after all our years of hard work and experience.

Can someone please explain to me why Canada is considered OFFSHORE? I am updating my resume, and I am wondering if I should include Acute Care experience. I do multi-specialty clinic work and H&Ps, Discharge Summaries, Consults, etc. for various Veteran's Administration hospitals and clinics. I would like to say I do Acute Care on my resume to beef it up, but because it is for the Veteran's Administration, the Acute Care reports are usually for things typically related to older patients.
