Those of you who claim to make TONS OF MONEY TYPING.... You are not straight typing MTs under regular circumstances IF I believe you...and I don't.

You probably work 7 days a week, all hours of the day like most MTs. You DO NOT work a regular 8-hour day, 5 days a week and make that much money. If that were true...there would be much more competition. The only perk is being at home. Period...End of story. Stop trying to sell me your ocean front property. I'm not buying!

and send work out to another transcriptionist..... while I handle all the administrative work I do not get paid for....other days I go to concerts... other days I just sleep.

There still are good jobs out there, and, of course, clients of your own to obtain if you are not happy working with services. Not everybody is miserable, although I have been through hard times too. I worked very hard to get where I am at and paid a heavy price.

This still is a good field. I am truly sorry some are not happy. I have been there too a few times and had some rough years in between injuries and had to work at nationals, some good and some not so good. Try obtaining your own clients to make more money. You can control the sound quality, workflow, prices to a certain degree, and make more money and become more productive with the same dictators using word expanders, macros, templates, shortcuts, etc. I know several MTs who are doing quite well still in this field with a lot of hard work. I now make so little doing MT, that $5 seems like $20 USED to be. Now, $20 seems like a "TON of money".

People in other jobs are at least getting cost-of-living increases once in a while. But as MTs, we've been kicked back to the 1940's.

I don't know how much money women with BS degrees make, some MTs have BS degrees. I'm an MT, my employer gives cost of living raises.

Which of course is why, as I job-hunt in earnest to get OUT of my current chintzy, chump-change company, I'm not even considering ANY MTSO. For me,it's either an hourly hospital job or nothing.

And "nothing" is highly preferable to the less-than-nothing one gets, working for a national MTSO.

I do not see how transcriptionists these days can make much money if at all working for the large nationals from what I read. It is much better to obtain your own clients and not work on some cumbersome platform. You are able to control sound quality, workflow, are familiar with the same dictators and thereby faster and more accurate, and can create more shortcuts, macros, and templates for productivity. However, you have more expenses and pay for your own insurance premiums, which are quite expensive.

when you have a BS degree it does not automatically guarantee that you are going to get a great, high paying job. It takes a lot of work and time to get a great job and make good money. Just sayin......

Ours has spyware on it, too. I uninstalled it from my PC. Too cumbersome - slows my machine down big time.

You can keep on doing that, while the walls crumble around you -- OR -- you can have yourself a good cry (or 3) and then resolve to pick yourself up and change your life.

There is absolutely nothing you can do about what is happening in this industry. All your whining and complaining on an internet message board isn't going to change it.

Go back to school. Learn a new skill. Make yourself marketable.

In the meantime, start cleaning houses to supplement your income and make ends meet. They make $20-$30 an hour in this neck of the woods (not California).

That has got to be the most pathetic post I have read. You post to incite people, which is called trolling. Very unprofessional. You would actually choke on what I make, far more than most people who hold bachelor's degrees, and I am not alone. We are supposed to be helping people on this board and not upsetting them or wasting their time.

As a matter of fact, I am sitting here in jeans and a t-shirt. I make good money (over $30 an hour), enough to support a kid and a mortgage, and I have never been--and never want to be a "suit." Sometimes it is easier to hurl the "suit" epithet than it is to examine one's own deficiencies or work to overcome them. How sad.

I get paid cpl and I wouldn't have it any other way. I have gotten paid by the page, by the minute, by the hour, etc. I far exceed any amount I've ever made getting paid cpl. If I want a raise, I give myself one by adding extra shortcuts into my expander or typing faster.

It is possible to make just as much money typing as it is with a BA degree. Trust me I have been there. I have a BA degree and had a great job before I had kids. Once I had them I decided to stay home, but still wanted to do something so I found MT school, did it and got a job. I have been on the same account for over 5 years now and my SH is full of short cuts. Straight typing, I was making just as much as I did with my big business job I had. Sometimes I would make more! Unfortunately, I was then switched to VR and well with that came a $1000 pay cut every month. I am getting faster, I just do not think I will ever be as fast as I was with just straight typing :(

I do straight typing, and am making a fine living, as long as there's enough work for 8 hours a day/5 days a week. I did try VR, and my pay was cut in half - I just can't read as fast as I can type. That's the biggest issue in making a living with transcription - how fast can you type and still be accurate? Knowing that's where the technology is going, I'm working as much as I can - if I can pay off the mortgage, the pay cut won't matter as much!

I am not sure what makes you think you know what everyone makes???? I am MT who works a regular schedule with no OT and i do from 285 to 400 LPH. Shorthand is the key. There are SO MANY PERKS to being a remote MT it is unbelievable!!! MY opinion ladies and my experience - just saying

Although I officially retired in December, I do agree with you. After observing the complaints, etc. I have come to the conclusion that some people are just not suited to MT, nor MT to them. There is nothing WRONG with that--lots of us are not suited to other things. I just wish that those who are so miserable would move on to find something that truly gives them what they need.

I'm the Team Lead at a hospital. I am doing well today, HOWEVER, I have looked up the road 2 years from now and can see the writing on the wall and am back in school to do something else. I am very aware on a daily basis that if I should lose this job or if I need or want to move for some reason, I am screwed.

I will never work on production again. (Did it for 10 years and had the foresight to get out of that rat race before the pay started going in the toilet about 5 years ago.)

I highly, highly advise you to go back to school and learn a new trade, lest you go down with the sinking ship. I see nothing on the horizon that indicates things will get better.

Believe what you want. I have been with the same hospital for 12 years now, and still make good money. I did take a pay cut when I went from roughly $56,000 a year to $42,000 the past year, but it is still good money.

Don't forget most professional positions are salaried and do not pay any OT even if you work 60+ hrs/week. Been there, done that.

I work 60/hrs week as an MT and will do so as long as I can or until I retire in 1-1/2 yrs. Yes, I used to make more. Yes, I work 2 jobs.

I've worked from home before but had to work full-time from home and part time at the hospital just to pay the bills then ended up quitting at home and went back to the hospital full time because I could make more money working from the hospital 40 hours than working 60 hours between the two. I have had it..The past 2 paychecks I made approximately $200.00 less..constantly getting work I have never done before from hospitals I have never done because there is no work in my hospitals, constantly having to run searches in DoQManage for reports because I have never done those hospitals before..then we are told there is a certain amount of lines/hour we have to do..there is NOT enough time in an hour to do all this plus transcribe. I type my butt off full time and don't make anywhere close to $2k a month. This is the first time I've gotten to see it since it's the first time they've had enough work for me to make my line count. So I have been working for private doctors for the past few years. Prior to that I worked for national companies doing straight transcription. Rates back then were 8 to 10 cpl, with 8 cpl being pretty low. Now 8 cpl seems to be where companies tap off. When did hospital jobs get almost as bad as working for a service? When I have had hospital MT jobs before, we were either paid hourly, or hourly base pay plus incentive. It was possible to make $22 to $25 an hour.
