PAY FOR VIRTUAL SCRIBES - INQUISITOR

Posted: Jun 12, 2015

My question is this...if you were working as a virtual scribe (via hipaa compliant video) from home what would you expect the pay per patient to be? Not hourly, just per patient that you documented and turned in to your supervisor at end of day...keep in mind you'd probably be on video about 4 hours a day. I'm really interested to see the responses to this question.

I don't think such a position exists. If it does - I still wouldnt want any part of it.

It does. See my post below ('And I think I've found what the OP's talking about' - sm

or the link in this post, below.

I'm with you, I wouldn't want any part of this one.  (I wouldn't qualify for this particular company anyway.  Per the Successful Applicant Profile tab:  "Current pre-medical or pre-PA students or recent post-graduates pursuing a career in medicine.")

The audio-only one (medical coordinator) does seem interesting, though, and seems geared toward mostly MTs (see the "News" section at valadoc.com).

If you went to your doctor - xx

and noticed a video camera in the examination room, would you even stay to ask what it was for? What if you saw it in the exam room at your GYN?

What a terrible idea. Not to mention how easy it is to hack video camera transmissions. Good encryption is expensive. You know no doctor or hospital is going to spend that kind of money.

I have seen - This type of Thing

[ In Reply To ..]
on the internet previously. I am not exactly sure what you would call it, but it is kind of like a "virtual scribe", but on-line over the computer, and not via a video camera. The transcriptionist logs into the doctor's office site, and types what the doctor says as he is examining the patient. The transcriptionist cannot see the patient, but only hears what the doctor is saying and types it into the reports. It is "live" just like a scribe is right there in the examining room. I have seen it demonstrated on line and it looks feasible. However, I am not sure what this type of position would pay. It is an at-home position. If I could get into something like this, I would do so myself, as the patient is not seen by the "scribe" and only hears what the doctor dictates in real time. It also allows for questions by the MT to be answered immediately should she have any, such as with drug names, etc. I like the idea. I wish more of this could be done. What the cost to the doctor would be, I have no idea. I like it better than having a scribe right in the examining room with the patient and the doctor. :-)

I think this is what you're talking about. - sm

Audio only, through the doc's tablet; no video.  A "medical coordinator." (see link below)

I'd be curious to find out what the pay is like.  And the demand for it, which I doubt is very much yet, or probably ever going to be.  I find the idea of it from a patient standpoint a little uncomfortable, but less so than having another person/scribe actually in the exam room, I guess.  *Definitely* less so than having a video camera in the room, though.

I was somewhat unimpressed with the medical coordinator's performance of her job that's shown in the video.  I didn't like her judgment call when she substituted the word "phlegm" (which is a word I've virtually never heard dictated) and left out the color "green" (which is an important fact) stated by the patient regarding her discharge.

edited to add:  On further perusing the site, I see that Joe Weber (of Smartype) is involved with the company (in the "About Us" section), who is someone I was always impressed by in terms of his direct interaction with and helpfulness towards MTs on this board, as well as elsewhere.  If I had a more up-to-date computer set-up, I might consider this career move myself.

Not only is there a camera in the room (apparently not directed at the patient, though maybe sometimes it is?), but the virtual scribe is "on video" too (as per the original post).  What, you mean I'd have to start wearing makeup for work again, at home?  No thanks, lol.

But seriously, I couldn't even begin to estimate the pay per patient for such a thing without having any idea how long each would take.  Why not hourly pay?

How many patients could you do per hour? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
How could anyone possibly answer this question without more info? Big difference between completing 6 patients in 4 hours vs. 8 or 12, etc.

I'd want at least $15-20 an hour, so divide like $80 (unless there's even more necessary work outside of that 4 hours) by the average number of patients done in 4 hours to get pay per patient? If 8 patients, that would be $10 per patient, right?

I think pay - would be determined

[ In Reply To ..]
by the facility you were working for, and not necessarily on a per patient basis. I think hourly would be the best way to pay, as each patient would be for an undetermined length and not necessarily of benefit to the scribe. More investigation would be needed. How many doctors are actually utilizing this type of documentation?? Probably not many yet.

also might be used for Dr. on Demand that Dr. Phil and his son have.

Pay for virtual scribes - btrans247

[ In Reply To ..]
Seems to me working this way would be much less productive compared to the way medical transcription/editing is done now. I know the hospital I used to work for has scribes who follow the doctors around enter their reports in Epic, and have other errands they also do besides "transcription.". I don't think their pay is very good. Maybe $12 to $15 an hour. Supposedly they don't mind since they're pre-med and they get to have the hospital work experience.

Virtual Scribes
Apr 02, 2014

I ran across a company offering virtual scribes. Their scribes sound like a cross between transcriptionist, coding, assistant. It is done over the internet. The company I ran across is Physicians Angels. I could not find any career page to check out possible positions/requirements, and I don't know if it is done by ILPs, although their office is in the states. Anyone heard of virtual scribes and know of other companies that do this? Always looking for a way to break away from ...

May 19, 2015

Just gave my 2-week notice.  After working for this company for 18 years, first as full-time then dropping to part-time, I just can't do it anymore.  They took a job I absolutely loved doing and turned it into the most stressful, underpaid job I have ever had. I have read this board many, many times through the years and have laughed and cried.  This company is corporate greed at its best (worst?).  So, to all my "virtual friends" out there, thank you for listening ...

Hey, I Read An Article Somewhere About Virtual Organizing For Union Purposes.
Jun 12, 2015

I read somewhere that the employees of Gawker, an on-line news medium, had organized and voted for a union. They did this completely virtually, over computers, thereby bypassing management's chance to try to stop the effort. I am wondering if we should do the same thing. I plan on doing a little more research on it. Wouldn't that frost Nuance's little cookies if we could do something like that?? ...

The New MT -- Medical Scribes?
Oct 09, 2011

Does anyone have good input on whether medical scribes are the new medical transcriptionists only being filled my medical students, medical assistants or a part-time or piecemeal clerk at a lower rate (hourly or by piece) than medical transcriptionists -- if lower pay is even possible? Also, what are any inputs on RHIT and the medical coding future? I already have a bachelor's degree but thought about another associate degree in RHIT in a CAHIIM accredited program. From your viewpoint, wou ...

Information About Scribes?
Nov 09, 2011

Can anybody give me information about scribes?  I just applied for a job that is for a medical transcriptionist/medical assistant which requires the transcriptionist to scribe for the doctor.  I'm concluding that you are in with the doctor and patient and basically just typing what he is saying during the appt rather than doc trying to treat the patient and document information at the same time.  Do these types of positions usually get paid higher than a transcriptionist?  Thanks for an ...

Remote Scribes
Jun 24, 2013

We all know the frustration in dictation where they don't use a pause button, how our salaries dwindle to nothing as a result.  I noted an ad on the Job Seeker's Board to train to become a "remote scribe" for .07 to .08 CPL.  Doesn't it seem this would also dwindle to nothing as it seems there would be far more waiting for data to enter and would take forever to complete a line if you are working in real time.  Anyone have any info on how this would work? ...

MTs Will Make The Best Scribes
Sep 05, 2013

There is a budding new profession, for which MTs will be perfect.  It's explained in an article at http://smartype.com/id12.html.  Both the demand and the pay for transcription are dropping precipitously.  It's a good time to consider a career transition.  The tough part will be finding physicians who recognize that their lives will be immensely better if they have YOU doing all their EHR documentation...and that it's easily worth $40K per year. ...

Scribes - Starting Salary
Mar 30, 2010

I do medical transcription for a local specialty practice.  They are transitioning to EHR and gave notice to their MTs that they would be cutting back on their MT needs starting next week.  Today, the office mgr. called and asked if I would be interested in a Scribe position.  In short, I am.  The manager would like to learn my salary requirements.  I am thinking of asking to start at $10/hour.  Does that seem reasonable.  N.B. Oranges And Apples --- EHR And Point-n-click And Scribes
Nov 10, 2011

I think these ideas are getting used interchangeably when they are very different applications.  EHR is still transcribed documents, just not paper charts.  Facilities have already been on this for a good while now and the transcriptionist will basically see no difference as we don't usually handle a chart anyways in-house or virtually.  However, it is the point-n-click programs that are phasing out the transcribed document.  ...
