Need opinion on extra cash ideas... - JW

Posted: May 24, 2014

I live in a small town with local elementary school K-4 with about 700 children. I thought since I live literally 2 minutes from the school and my own 2 children attending the school I could pick up about 4 children (my vehicle would hold that many) and keep them at my house from 3 to 5 or 6ish. Charging $6/hour/child you can do the math. I would feed them a little something and perhaps start on homework. I am well known in the community and have a nice and tidy home so on and so on....As a parent needing after-school childcare would this be something perhaps you would be interested in?

Personally, the poster below that mentioned phone sex might be onto . - something. I hear that pays well and SM

you can still work from home. I have read that most of those guys are just lonely and want someone to talk to.

not what I - know

Acquaintance owned phone sex biz. Went out of biz due to men turning to web for Skype chats and homemade porn. The men were NOT lonely. Many married. Wanted to talk about really perv stuff like their OWN MOTHERS with horses, if you get my drif.

lol. Maybe good for a laugh?? How could you not giggle - about some of the stuff?? nm

ugly, demeaning. I felt so sorry for the employees. It was obvious they were forced to do this due to lack of marketable skills. Callers disgusting.

It may work, but...SM - Old Anon

check with your state/county whether you need to have a daycare license (in mine, you do), check your homeowners insurance and auto insurance as to how much personal liability insurance you carry should one of the kids get injured in your home/car. Also, do you have enough toddler/child seats and room in your car for each of them? Do a mini-business plan and add up all the costs of "doing business" versus what you are charging. Would you really make a profit? Then there's the matter of the money you do make, you'd have to file the proper schedules on your income taxes to claim it and the deductions for your operating costs. Lots to think about. Maybe you could start looking after 1 child. You probably wouldn't need a daycare license for that number.

There might be laws on background checks as well. Regardless - if her clients know her. NM

.

She might need a lot more liability insurance - than just regular homeowners ins. (sm)

The same might be true for auto liability insurance, though I may be wrong about that.

JW...Great idea! (sm) - Rose

I have a couple of friends who run daycares, one in WA, formerly in CA and one in UT. States have really strict rules now that these providers have called a real pain to get licensed. I'm not sure if an aftercare would be any different but you might want to check into it.

Back in the day, when I worked on-site at a - medical clinic, I was sometimes - S_M

asked by one doctor or another to type up manuscripts. Some were from handwritten notes, some from dictation. Sometimes they were in outline form, so they could use them as notes when they were giving presentations at medical meetings/conventions, or when teaching at a nearby medical school. Many others published papers, and a couple of them published books. That was my favorite project, of course!

When the clinic decided I should be doing only clinic transcription, and not their papers, they simply paid me cash to type them on my own time after work or on the weekend.

I'm sure doctors are still giving talks, still writing books and papers. I seriously doubt they're sending that work to MTSOs to be typed in India! So, maybe asking around your area to see if doctors need a manuscript typist could be helpful.

childcare - homebound

I have always watched kids out of my home....no license...no extra insurance...it is a great way to make extra money and helpful to the families because it is a lot less than daycare...i charge less than you are considering...i have 4 kids at this time

lucky no kid ever fell and got injured. Where I live, - people with trampolines in their yard

make you sign a waiver.

be careful...anyone can get sick of the noise or whatever, and turn you in. There's square footage involved in how many you are allowed to take in - they do that with preschools (same thing, store front though). Claim that money on taxes? And I do believe you need to have certain insurance or up your insurance for that. I mean, if something happened to one of your regulars and your homeowners finds out this is a side job...I would think they could deny any claims and tell you its a business liability, not personal family. We all know what straws the insurance companies grab when looking for any reason to reject a claim.

but whatever...good luck, for sure.

before and after school care - I did it

[ In Reply To ..]
I did this for 3 years, just 1 child. It worked out really well and the extra cash was great.

personally the phone sex sounds better to me than having to deal with children...but then I do not particularly like short people. Check the regulations in your town and state...you probably have to have a criminal background check, license, insurance, bonding, health inspection, TB test and who knows what else to do this. NOTHING is easy anymore is it?

check your state day care laws - a lot of states have limits on how many kids

[ In Reply To ..]
I have a friend who runs an in-home daycare in California who is licensed and the whole 9 yards. Every adult in her house had to go through a criminal background check, fire department approved fire prevention, and more that I don't know.

A lot of states have limits on the number of kids you can charge for, so it's something you'll need to check. Other than that, I think it's a great idea.

Home Daycare - Know someone who did this

Just be clear about when kids are to be picked up! Had a friend who had a waiting list soon after she started doing this and had very little trouble getting paid on time, so it worked well financially. BUT people picking up their kids on time was another matter! She was too nice about "traffic delays" and all the rest, and many evenings she did not get everyone cleared out, things cleaned and straightened up for the next day, her own dinner (!) until pretty late in the evening and actually a couple of hours beyond when everyone was supposed to be picked up.

$6 an hour may be high to some parents - a lady in my town charges $3.50

[ In Reply To ..]
It all depends on where you live I guess. All my friends with babies/kids are broke so when I offer to babysit I only charge $2.50/hour per kid and they think I'm really cheap (but happy) and I actually do stuff with the kids, meals, cleanup, activities, not just in their playpen or watching TV. I'm cheaper than teen sitters in my town from what I hear. I also clean homes for people at $5/hour. I may be low-balling myself but I know people are broke and can't afford professional services but I work for people I know personally and they trust me and have no complaints on my childcare or cleaning abilities and are happy to pay me.

It may be worth a shot putting up a flyer at the school (with permission) and making some kind of payment arrangement or discount for siblings.

Good luck.

Need Some Ideas.
May 24, 2012

Well this whole transcription thing is not going well. Duh! With a really bad work schedule, an hour commute each way and now the threat of the hospital outsourcing our department, I am trying to think of something I can do from home besides work for peanuts for a MTSO. I am expecting my first child soon and really want to be home with him.  Does anyone have a friend or family member who has successfully implemented her own business (perhaps with a transcription background) and if so, ...

Any Ideas?

Why Do They Keep Asking For Extra Hours?

Where Does The Extra Money Go?
Sep 27, 2010

I assume that the MT companies set up a contract with the client for them to pay on a per-line basis.  Of course, they charge more than they pay us; that's how they make their money & that's fine.  But what I'm wondering is... when we get a report that comes in as VR instead of straight typing, where does the extra money go, since we get paid less for VR.  I feel like I work just as hard, if not harder on VR than typing a report.  So why don't we make ...
