Does anybody wonder why we don't get paid by the hour like other highly-skilled secretaries and editors? This line business is a joke! Why should we get penalized for the bad dictation? Many years ago, we had a client with dictators from ****. I called up the director of medical records and apologized for all the blanks. She told me not to worry about it. She said she had a box of pens on her desk and she made the doctors take a pen and fill in all their blanks before they left the department or she would write them up. This is what the medical records people are supposed to do.

Hourly pay would also mean the so called cherry pickers would have the same pay as the grunts that really do the most difficult work with no compensation. The pay by line is just another way for them to rip us off.
As IC, cpl isnt rip off for me. As top producer, I make more $.than any would - pay me by hour.

You are making it sound that you are somehow smarter than the rest of us. We are all intelligent enough to do this job or we would not be here doing it. We all know they hire too many people and there is no work to produce. Period!!!!

Of course, there has to be a real reason for the downtime. It is awesome knowing what my paycheck is going to be every payday. I can't imagine going through what you girls go through when you must rely on being paid by the line and having no work. I consider myself very lucky in having a paid by the hour job as I know they are very few and far between.

[ In Reply To ..]Would be very interested in knowing. Companies are starting monitor keyboarding while on the clock and pushing to have us work more steadily. If they continue further this way and destroy our independence here at home, I'm going to want to be paid by the hour just as I would be in an office, but with the incentive pay to work as hard as I do.
BTW, since your company is paying for employees' time rather than production, should they choose it would be reasonable to hold employees to as tight a day even as two 15-minute breaks, 1/2-hour lunch, or whatever minimum the labor code sets.

[ In Reply To ..]I am one of the few fortunate ones to still have a paid by the hour job. I make $25/hr plus benefits. I consider myself lucky in today's MT job market to have the security of a paycheck each week that I know how much it will be. Yes, we clock in and out for lunch and have 2 breaks a day. I'm not complaining. We have a break room with a TV and stocked with bottled water, tea, coffee, hot chocolate creamer, flavor packets for the water. We are free to go get a cup of coffee or bottle of water anytime during the day. No one argues over who is doing what doc's reports or how long or complicated this or that report is. We grab 3 jobs as they come in and put them in our que and everyone is happy. When we catch up for a few minutes we read a book or chat until more work comes in. I don't wake up saying "Oh god, I don't want to go to work today".

Yes we have 8 hour shifts we must adhere to and get two 10 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch. Our supervisor is pretty flexible if we need to change our schedules or whatever. We get to choose which accounts we want to work on, although if you choose an account she will check how you do on that account compared to another transcriptionist and if you are not up to par then you will not get that account. I say again, I do consider myself very lucky because I know these jobs are few and far between.

. . . we have to retype the entire VR job because it is 99% WRONG. It seems like it is getting worse instead of better. The last week practically every job has every fifth word right but the rest is wrong. At some point it quits being voice recognition and is pure transcription. Any time we have to fix more than 10% of any job = straight typing. And they wonder why we HATE VR? It was nothing more than a ploy to get 50% of the MTs pay. ...

Detail. Then click on a job number and when page comes up on job view pull down, select Count Log file. THAT will show the job you are getting paid on. It will show the multiplier etc. Doesnt matter what the final line count is. That may not be what you actually did anyway. Final line count is the count they are paying you on, not necessarily the count you actually did. ...
