Geez!! Some of the tests these MTSOs give out - sm

Posted: Sep 25, 2012

are ridiculous!!  I want so bad to tell them I am not a doctor!  They expect me to know things that there is no way to know!!  I just got another one of those tests.  Very tempting to tell them what they can do with that test!  They could pay me $100 an hour and I MIGHT try it!  Wow!!  Just wow!  Was going to insert a mad smiley here, but they are not working.

Maybe they just want MTs that CAN pass the test, know how - to use google to lookup unknown terms. nm

Testing - Passing through

[ In Reply To ..]
Actually many of those tests are easy compared to what you will encounter in a real life work situation. They don't expect you to know anything that you should not know in order to do medical transcription. I've read posts like this before, I am assuming they were from you. Perhaps you need some additional education, more terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, etc. before you try to take any more tests. I would also suggest an attitude adjustment.

Wow!! What rude responses from both of you - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I suggest YOU BOTH get attitude adjustments!! I am NOT going to take a ridiculous test for 7 or even 8 cpl!! Get real!

Whatever - Passing through

[ In Reply To ..]
It is not an entitlement program, it is called work.
that totally made me laugh out loud - it is called work
[ In Reply To ..]
and I agree...

good luck with that - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If you cannot pass the ridiculous test for 7 cpl, what, exactly, do you expect to be paid? And by whom?

Which is it, test or the 7 to 8 cpl? - Where have you been

[ In Reply To ..]
I have taken difficult tests. I have taken tests that were impossible to complete perfectly because of audio, etc. They company knows this already. Are you testing for a particular specialty in which you have no experience? You say "I am not a doctor." Well none of us are, but we are all expected to pass a medical transcription test in order to be hired and to demonstrate whether or not we should even be in that position. Perhaps you are testing for the wrong position.

Was it you who said you were "not going to complete a ridiculous test for 7 or even 8 cpl?" Really....? Where have you been? That is the going rate these days. How do you think you are going to do better than that, especially if you cannot pass an MT test. Since you mentioned 7-8 cpl, this must be for straight typing. If you know the work, can pass a test, and have the skill and knowledge that is really necessary, you can take that 7-8 cpl and turn it into $30,000 to $35,000 or better. That is not enough for you? What do you think you should be making? And more importantly, why?

Not rude - Realistic

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't think anybody was rude here. Those tests are designed to give you an idea of what to expect on the job. If you can't pass the test, you aren't going to be able to do the job, and they need people to do the job. I don't want to do this for pennies, either, but I would expect that a test I was given is realistic as to what they need.

I'm not sure why you would want an easy test, then get on the job and be totally floored and surprised.

I've never had a problem with any tests. In fact, most are easier than I'll ever see on a normal work day, which is acute care with ESL dictators, all the specialties, etc.
I've always wondered - do the tests say FAIL?
[ In Reply To ..]
I've always made it to the end of the tests, grammar, medical, computer, practicum. After the easy multiple choice and fill in the blanks it always says "congratulations"! I always assumed it meant I passed that part and then moved on to the next part... Do the tests actually say "fail" you cannot proceed? I've never thought they were too hard either but have seen quite a few posts about them being so hard. I'll agree they are long, but no different than actual work reports.

If MTs were tested and licensed, this wouldn't be necessary - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Most job titles come with some kind of requirement that prove that the person holding that title deserves it. MT doesn't have one. We have the CMT, but MTSOs don't value it. So, you have to test. If you can't pass the test, try another one. If you fail more than 3 or 4, the problem is most likely not in the tests. You just need to work on your skills.

I have to agree with the other posters SM - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
The tests are designed not only to see if you know your medical, but to detect actual on-the-job experience, basic knowledge of grammar, your eye for catching errors, and the ability to problem solve. The voice file testing is yet another set of challenges.

It's good to take tests where openly offered for the testing practice and insight as to what to expect working any medical transcription job, tho. But imagine 8 to 10 hours of same coupled with accents, mumblers and fast-talkers.

Your post sounds none other than you are in over your head. I would expect your comments from someone self-taught or still in school for this. If not hte case, you might want to reassess this whole thing. You don't have to be a doctor, but it is expected you know what you are doing or one wrong keystroke could harm the patient. Transcription is not for everyone, and that does not mean failure.

Cheer up, have faith, and good luck to you always.

One wrong keystroke! - I doubt it!

[ In Reply To ..]
You really think one bad keystroke could harm the patient????? GMAB! Look what doctors do to patients; the misdiagnosis, the mistakes, the wrong side, wrong meds and to top that off, they don't even read these reports, in fact, who does? Let's get real here. These MTs that think they are changing the world of medicine with their transcription skills, need to get a life!!!!

you need to get a life!!! - acm

[ In Reply To ..]
Unless you're banging the keyboard every day, you don't know what you're talking about. One keystroke CAN change the meaning of many words! You have just shown how little you actually know about transcription!
agree - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
IDoubtIt, we all make mistakes. Someone who thinks they - do not matter is scary, tho. NM

I know MT reports are basically ignored, but when you sign that - contract you give up the expectation one bad SM

[ In Reply To ..]
keystroke will be forgiven. You sign a contract expecting to produce a perfect document and that is what the MTSO is paying for. I expect every job I do to be perfect and if it isnt, that is on me.

Mistake in my preop HP almost killed me - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Several mistakes were made in my preoperative HP for which I ended up in the neuro ICU and almost died. I did not sue him at the time, as he works closely with all of my clients, but we are putting a lawsuit through now. If you think mistakes cannot be lethal, THINK AGAIN! BTW, my lawsuit is being held up, as there were 25 blanks in my operative report! Goodness, I sat right in front of the doctor and filled them in to his utter amazement, and then offered me a job.

Well... - Old, Tired MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I thought her post didn't come across right. Not just that she was over her head. She came across kind of arrogant, like, hire me anyway. I think that's why people kind of got their backs up. If she had come on and said, "aaack, help," she wouldn't have gotten what some see as harsh responses.

Testing and job duties - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Testing is part of the hiring process. Do you know what it is like to get back 100 minutes of dictation that is completely incorrect? I had a transcriptionist actually copy and paste part of an ortho sample onto a breast cancer report!

BTY, I make $100 per hour at the going rate on some dictators, so it can be done.

Maybe you should take some additional courses for transcription? I went through a 1-year program at a vocation school that was so bad that I repeated the course, this time a 2-year program, at a local college and never lack work.

Good luck...

Excellent Resource For Taking Tests For MTSOs
Aug 18, 2014

I took a test for an MTSO last week that required extensive knowledge of prefixes, roots, and suffixes.  I found an online resource that resulted in my getting 100% on all 4 sections of the test.  I have to admit that I knew probably 75% of them, but this resource helped me pass all of the tests.  http://www.globalrph.com/medterm7.htm However, I haven't heard anything from the company other than "Congratulations!  You passed all 4 tests 100%!"  No actual transcrib ...

I'm thinking of just not doing it and forgetting about that particular application. One of them I really was interested in too but what if I do all ...

Job Pays 30 Cents Per Audio Minute, Geez
Jan 18, 2013

So there is job posted that pays 30 cents an audio minute.  How generous!  You figure depending on the dictator and difficulty of transcript 60 minutes of audio is equal to 3 hours of transcribing.  Granted, most of the time it does not take that long, but just in case for good measure we'll say 3 hours for 60 audio minutes.  Do the math!  30 cents a minute x 60 (1 hr)= 1800.  So another words, if you divide 1800 by 3 you get your hourly rate = 6 buck ...

Transcription Tests
Dec 03, 2011

Why in the heck don't employers give you at least some basic instructions for a transcription test? Some want you to format, others don't.
