Before accepting that position... - CPL Misleading

Posted: Jul 10, 2012

I work for a service on two different account. On one, if everything is working right, I make $4.00 per hour. Much more than half my time is spent doing things they require that we get paid nothing for. We do NOT get paid for our keystrokes, or I would be making more than double my hourly rate. I spend several minutes filling out everything I have to document, then only a few seconds transcribing, then back to documenting the next job that is only a few seconds long. The other account with the same service doesn't have all that BS that you have to fill out and all those lengthy procedures to have to go through. I make twice what I make on the other account. What it comes down to is that the MTSO do not care if their dictators are using cell phones, if they speak English, if they know how to hold a mic, etc. They don't care about the things they could easily correct with a phone call as long as it doesn't make THEM miserable. About the only thing we can do is communicate on forums about these companies and compare notes, as the CPL means absolutely nothing when you can only make about 1/4th what you made as a contractor.

great point! - tmt

You make a great point about the things that are mandatory, but uncompensated. THAT'S why our line rate was what it was. We were getting paid for the mandatory stuff that wasn't included in the body of the report.

You could go work for an MTSO that doesn't require you to spend so much time on non-paid work, who does understand we're all in it to make money.

Just because you work for a crappy employer doesn't mean all employers are crappy, nor does it mean you're an indentured servant. Whatever happened to free will?

Do you have a list of such MTSOs? That would be an - invaluable resource! nm

This exploitation can vary by account. Reports for one account I do not work any more - typically arrive with most or all patient ID

[ In Reply To ..]
data missing, dates not entered, work type not chosen, etc. This is the practice of the doctors at the hospital, the MTSO's client--to shift data entry to the MTSO, which, instead of telling them no or charging more (or maybe they do), in turn has us do the hospital data entry but only pays us for lines transcribed. Not that I'm interested in being paid squat for doing data entry.

Regardless, whenever this happens we're being flat out cheated, with everyone else benefiting by exploiting the MT. It is not a case of paying "less" but of cheating us by only paying for lines transcribed.

That particular account also required us to send an amazing number of QA notes related to all the missing info (you know, fill in date, then send note to EQA saying date missing). This was another serious income-eating MT problem the MTSO didn't work to minimize. It was a rare report that didn't require one note, 2 were normal, and 3 common. My company still has this large account, with probably hundreds of people working on it, but now that I know what it is, I'd quit before I'd allow myself to be assigned to it again. A flat NO.

it's not their job to care - Snow Bunny

anymore than it is for the employer of construction workers to care if they're working on a major highway project with a deadline and it's 100+ degrees outside.

What you need to do, if you're not already doing so, is to keep very detailed records of what you're doing and how long it takes for you to do it, along with copies of your pay, and submit it all to the Labor Department. They'll perform an investigation ... they do not give your name out.

Before Accepting A Job...
Aug 08, 2012

A good question to ask is how long the dictations are and if you can sample the dictations for sound quality. I'm stuck on an account that must have the cheapest mics, or let all their docs use cell phones. Only about 10% of the dictations are decent sound quality by someone who knows how to dictate. Only a fraction of the dictations are more than 30 seconds long and there are a ton of things we are required to do for free (i.e. not producing lines) that take more than 50% of the time to d ...

Creative Comments When Accepting
Mar 25, 2015

Like, I wonder if instead of just my initials and that I reviewed my error, I should try something like: "Yes I made a mistake, no I DON'T think my pay should go down by $100, how would you like it?" "How would you like it if you had to be perfect OR you got your pay docked?" "Yes, I willlfully accept my error, but I do NOT accept your wage theft." Of course, I am accepting their wage theft in reality by signing that and staying employed by the devil. Sigh. I doubt anyone cares what yo ...

To Those Doing The MT/MME Position
Jan 15, 2010

I know from previous posts on here that that job isn't the big thing MQ was making it out to be (horrible editing pay, etc).  BUT...do you guys at least have work to do, whether it is typing or editing?  I am just an MT and I run out of work daily.  If I had become an MME as well, would I have at least been making a little money, or are you guys running out of work too, no matter what? Thanks. ...

Does This Put Me In A Bad Position?
Jan 06, 2011

I just wrote a very long post, but decided to minimalize it because I feel very on edge with my company and I'm doing the absolute best I can. If you know the hospital that hired your company is not happy with the work that is being produced, and you are able to see glaring errors in other people's work, would you say something to management or keep it to yourself? This is MY job too, and if the errors continue I am afraid the hospital will go elsewhere, meaning my job is gone as wel ...

MME Position
Apr 03, 2012

Are there any MMEs out there who regret having become an MME? And if you become an MME, are you able to go back to just MT status if you decide you do not like it? Did you see a significant increase in pay, a slight increase, no increase at all, or did you actually lose money? Thanks. ...

Does This Sound Like An IC Position To You?
Jan 26, 2010

The following nasty gram was sent to all independent contractors from the company owner.  I'm just curious to know . . . how many ICs treated like this? Hi everyone - I wanted to touch base with all of you immediately, as we have a very serious problem.  Aside from a very few MTs who have notified us in advance that they would be out, we have many MTs who are not working their agreed upon shift and it has put us in a serious hole.  If there is work in your pool for the physi ...

Considering A Position With KeyStrokes

Considering a position with KeyStrokes.  However, I'm wondering how QA is with grammar the stuff.  I'm getting QA'd to death where I'm at now.  I'll change things according to how QA says it should be, but the next time it's still not right.......one time it's use a semi-colon, next time it's put in a comma, next time it's start a whole new sentence, etc., etc.  I'm pulling my hair out!  I'm getting so tired of changing things only t ...

Need Some Advice About A Position
Jun 08, 2010

I need some advice about a position that I am being offered.  It is an IC position.  They want Tu-Sat or Sun-Thurs and 1500 lines per day.  This is supposedly 70% VR and the rest is straight typing.  I know that techniqually they aren't supposed to require weekend work and line requirements for IC, but how is the best way to negotiate this and still get the job?  I hate the job that I am currently doing and don't make enough money at it.  I usually do work ...
