ANYONE GO OUT ON DISABILITY SUCCESSFULLY AFTER 20+ AS AN MT? - Greta

Posted: Apr 19, 2011

I've been doing this since having an IBM Selectric was the fastest typewriter out there.  I'm under 50, but in the past 6+ years, my neck and back have started killing me.  I went out, spent $800 on a Herman Miller Aeron chair - what a waste of money.  I've been getting epidural steroid injections and had rhizotomies in upper and lower.  MRI shows bone spurs and degeneration.  I applied for SS Disability on my own, and was denied.  I spoke with a lawyer and he said I probably won't qualify.  Has anyone else experienced similar "disability", tried to get benefits, and were denied or accepted???  I'd just love to discuss it.

Find an attorney who specializes in SS disability. Also, if you have it, take some medical documentation from your physician stating that he/she feels you are disabled and not able to do MT work or similar types of work. That is how you will get someone on your side. It's a tough job since you are under 50.

Sorry to say this and I don't mean to be mean, but just think what state this country would be in if every over 50 person with back problems went on disability. I am over 50 and have back problems too. I have thought that at some point I may need to find another field of work that is not so hard on my back, but not disability. Again, not trying to be mean, just my opinion. No, 50 years old is not too old to find another line of work.

Back in the old days, if you had a problem with the type of work you did, you either learned to deal with it or found another line of work.

I agree, I've had back problems for quite a few years now too. I'm only 45 and I'm going to have to deal with it because I've got a lot of years left to work. I'm not a fan of taking the easy way out . . . we have to suck it up and deal with it.

Agree with the suck up and deal with it, if can, but - in the bad old days, the disabled went and sat

on a curb with a can. Wrapped in a blanket if lucky enough to have one. Having all these sick destitute people on the streets was normal, as all the nice people walking by accepted it to be.

Some people REALLY ARE unable to continue working enough to support themselves, and it's inappropriate to assume the act of applying for disability coverage is evidence of sloth.

Some don't have families who can support them.

Churches and charities have never managed to help more than the little portions of need they take on.

Every year MANY disabled people in our wealthy country die for lack of basic needs.

...of which the disability program is a part of. And personally I'm grateful that I and my family will have that option if I'm ever unable to work. I paid into it and I'm glad it's there for disabled people.

I'm not referring to truly disabled people, but back problems in an over 50 year old. Come on, we all have them. Should we all be on disability. I truly wake up in tears some mornings but go to work. I take a lot of breaks to stretch and bend and take Tylenol. When I get where I just can't stand to sit here and type anymore, I will find something where I don't have to sit all day.

In my opinion, there are many people taking advantage of the system for things. There is so much fraud out there it isn't funny. Many people think they should be on disability because of the aches and pains from getting older. Tough, we all have aches and pains but that is life. If you go blind, lose your arms or legs, become paralyzed, those are disabilities. Actually I worked with a guy who was paralyzed from the waste down. He worked everyday in a wheelchair.

I am presuming that you are not an M.D. and even if you are, you are obviously not this woman's M.D. You are one accident or illness away from being totally disabled. Please don't be so judgmental of others.

I wasn't saying that there aren't deserving people on disability. I was only saying that trying to get disability just because your back hurts a little bit ridiculous. I've just seen way too many lazy people lie and work the system and sit around and collect money when they could be working.

Every disability is different. Your post sounds to me like thinly veiled criticism of this person. And no, I am not on disability, but I would not criticise those who are.

sorry - nina

No, I am not criticising this person at all. There are those who legitimately should be on disability.

I've been in the business 30 years and 3 years ago had failed brain surgery that left me partially paralyzed. I was immediately eligible for Disability but of course you have to wait 90 days to apply after not working that long. I worked one handed since I was paralyzed on one side and had to learn to do it all again. I still cannot sit up in a desk chair very long, but what I do is sit in a recliner sideways to the desk and I operate the pedal with my arm, keyboard on a pillow, mouse on the right-hand side of the chair. I paid up to 500 for chairs and this did not work, try a recliner. I also worked for Disability for 4 years and what they will tell you is if this job makes you hurt, find something else. I also have a blind daughter who works full time and know of legless people working, one-armed people, etc., and I wouldn't think of filing.

Wow. I'm sorry I asked. I've been paying into SS since I'm 16 years old. My neck and back problems are legit and I've also had carpal tunnel (which a friend of mine used to go out on disability 20 years ago, while I sucked it up, had the surgery and returned to typing). I'm not trying to mooch off the system, and these aren't just aches and pains. I admire those with disabilities who continue to work, but my problems are affecting me mentally now as well - and when you start thinking you'd rather be dead than to sit in that chair just one more day, I figured I'd explore the options. For those of you who didn't judge me - thank you; but for those of you who bashed me - live one day in my shoes. Not even 50 and I can't play with my kids, of which I have 5 ranging in age 30 to 4, the last 2 adopted foster children who I thought adopting even after being 40 I'd be able to be a fun Mom to. Not even 50 and taking lisinopril, Klonopin, Arthrotek, and Percocet so my head is in the clouds all day. Choice? I don't think so.

Anyone Successfully Using DQS On Windows 7 64-bit?
Jan 22, 2012

I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 64-bit and would love to use it to work on, but tried yesterday and it wouldn't not work.  It kept saying it needed NET Framework version 2.0 (SP2) downloaded from Microsoft site, which I did, and it still didn't work.  Why can't they come out with DQS 7 yet?  It's already a month past due.  It'd be nice if they could finally get something right! ...

Has Anyone Very Successfully Finished Their Coding Courses Only To.....
Dec 02, 2013

Feel that it's not really what you want to do?  I finished my coding course at Andrews and truly don't feel that's what I want to do.  I feel disappointment in myself because I invested that much time in school and did very well, but I feel it's not really the job for me.  I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this or anything similiar? Did you just stick with it until you found a job and did your feelings change?   I kept try ...

from a PC that was provided by a company?  If so, how does one do this? I work for one of the MTSOs and they provided a desktop PC.  However, there are times when I would like to be mobile and would like to be able to use my laptop.  The company will load their software on their PCs and will not load it on an employees personal computer.  So I am trying to devise a way to be able to use my laptop on those occasions when I would like to take my work with me. I'm On Disability
Aug 19, 2010

I'm a disabled MT (Radiology) and am able to earn $720 per month per govt guidelines. I had the ideal job until recently thanks to VR. I was able to work a few hours each day until I reached my $720 limit. Don't think I could work 8 hours at this point so giving up my disability is doubtful as I have lung damage. I am finding it impossible to find employment because I have to tell them that I can work...but only able to earn $720. I'm frustrated. There has got to be another ...

Disclosing Disability
Dec 31, 2012

My current MTSO gave me the option of employee status or IC. I chose IC. One of the reasons is because I have disabilities that do not allow me to work without breaks: CTS and neuropathy from a spine condition that causes unbearable foot pain with one particular dictator who requires constantly having to flap the foot pedal to try to make out what she is mumbling. They never gave me a schedule but I take about one day off a week and put in my agreed time per day. I have not disclosed my disabili ...

Question On Disability?
May 08, 2015

If you have a medical condition absolutely linked by your doctor to sitting here all day long, what are my options? Doc wants me to quit, does this become a job related disability? Can I get compensated or something, or do I just get to quit and go hungry? Making appointment with specialist to see if surgery can fix the problem but really need to know my options for the future. I've never in my life collected either U/E or disability, so kind of in the dark here. ...

Has Anyone Been On Long Term Disability
Feb 06, 2010

For the past week I've been on PTO because of terrible vertigo/nausea, apparently caused by labyrinthitis.   My vision is so blurry from the meds I'm on that I have to have my daughter type this for me.  Without the 3 different meds I'm on I am in hell, with them I am barely functional bc of the side effects of the meds (which are still better than the horror show carnival ride of vertigo.   My PTO will run out on Sunday and I know this is going to take a ...

Short Term Disability
Feb 25, 2013

My wife just went on short-term disability and so far has received a check for 3 days that is peanuts. I'm getting zero help from benefits/PR on this and Hartford is really pathetic. I know you get 50 percent, but 50 percent of what? She's a Level III MT. I calculated last years gross wage, divided it by 50%, divided by 26 so that should be the STD but I'm not sure what Hartford considers a base wage? Our attorney is curious too. Any one experience STD through Hartford/MMod ...

For Those On Disability Who Need To Change Professions (sm)
Jan 02, 2014

After I became disabled I went to the state Department of Rehabilitation and was amazed how much help they offer people who need to train for new careers.  The one I went do did complete testing to identify work limitations, gave tests for aptitude and desire for certain types of work, gave career counseling and even offered to pay for training programs, books, and software needed to change professions.  So for those who are disabled and working part time because of it, you might want ...

Transcribing Disability Claims Reports
