Work from home medical coders - needing a change

Posted: Mar 30, 2012

Can anyone tell me if there really are "work from home" medical coder jobs out there similar to how MTs work from home, and if so, what companies hire work from home coders?  I have been an MT for many years and need a change.  I have had formal education for coding (I went to and graduated from a college, not an online school) but have had no luck at all in finding a coding job let alone one that actually allows you to work from home.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Most college coding courses don't teach enough actual coding - May be your problem

There are some work-at-home coding jobs, but that isn't why most people get into coding. You said that you graduated from a college. Most college courses in coding are really inadequate to prepare graduates for the CCS exam for instance. You need credentials and/or experience to get a job. If you attended a school that is one of the exceptions, one that actually does teach enough coding for you to pass credentials tests, go take the CCS exam. You'll have better success in your job search, although you still may not be able to work at home.

You hit the nail on the head there. I have HIM-AS degree and most definitely not prepared to pass CCS, which is more important than the degree. All adds ask for experience but if you have credentials they will at least give you a look and test you. The need is not quite what it was a few years ago. Recruiter at my former employer told me the HIM grads would be lined up at HR for a coding position, and they used to hire them but now they can be pickier. Recruiter also told me she knows that going offshore is become more acceptable with electronic record and all the efforts to cut costs. All I can say is get credentials, stay positive and keep moving forward. I'm not going to let it defeat me either. There is still going to be need for HIM professionals and more work to be done from home.

Yes, there are. What credentials do you have? - sm

Yes, there really are. I know several people who do remote coding.

What credentials do you have, if you don't mind.

I was just going to post on the same thing. In the coupons with this morning's newspaper there is an ad, "Train to work at home. Be a medical coding specialist." The school is U.S. Career Institute.

I have seen comments in the past regarding the coding profession as not really able to be done at home.

I've also seen ads for medical billing to be done at home.

I'm curious about the work-at-home opportunities in these two fields.

TIA for any info on this.

There is no such thing as a "medical coding specialist" - nm

You have to watch those job titles. It sounds like 'Certified Coding Specialist', but isn't.

Used to be they advertised on matchbooks. - Perpetually Frustrated

Now it is ads on buses and coupons in the paper. Will it never end???

The above post is correct . . . there is no such thing as a medical coding specialist. They use that sounds-like term to rope in people who don't know better and, once having roped them in, to slither out of complaints that they did not teach what is necessary to get a job. (What? You could not pass the CPC or the CCS? Couldn't get a job? Well, we were teaching medical coding specialist, not CPC or CCS!)

At-home medical billing ads and seminars (the kind with free dinners) are nearly always scams, and definitely are if they involve some kind of software.

It is pretty much the same for coding. The more emphasis on "at home" the more likely it is to be a scam. At best, it would be a poor program.

There are remote coding positions, but they require substantial education, credentialing by nationally recognized professional associations, and often considerable experience. The work is difficult and has very high standards for accuracy and productivity.

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

When I Am Hiring Medical Coders
Jun 06, 2015

I have a process that I follow when I am hiring medical coders. It developed over many years, from interviewing many people and finding out who has what it takes to do the job and who doesn't. They must have both CPC and CCS credentials so I know that they have very solid training. I don't consider applicants who graduated from community colleges. Exception: If they have both CPC and CCS credentials, which rarely happens. I know that's blunt, but I'm being truthful. It ...

The Best Coders
Jan 31, 2010

I would love to get the point of view of others on this topic. I've been watching coders for years, our graduates and others. I've found from my own experience that the best coders are people who enjoy more structure than one might find in medical transcription, for example. People who enjoy accounting, bankers, medical office managers, many nurses, and sometimes burned-out MTs. If you have 10 medical transcriptionists transcribe a report, you may have that many different versions, ea ...
